As one who worked in stand-up in Ontario, I can attest that Trump was just the ultimate expression in a growing trend in comedy: the Political Non-Joke. This is where you say something the audience agrees with, and the audience applauds heavily. Rick Mercer - a very funny man - unfortunately specialized in it. You could, at one point, simply say ‘Rob Ford is an a**hole’ and get a smattering of applause. Would-be comedians: Applause is NOT laughter. Learn the difference.

An amusing thing is that when I watch your past video, I didn't think you disliked it, just that you expected them to be more brutal against Hollywood as a whole and not only a part of Disneyin particular. I think as a friend said, we're in a new puritanism, in which no one can give any feedback because it automatically made you either "one of them" or "one of us." And comedy in particular suffer a lot from these, because jokes are about subverting expectations, and showing the contradictions in people and institutions, but now if you make a joke it will turn you into a hero for some and a traitor for others. Sad times to be a comedian.
@pedroares6562 Жыл бұрын
@Lawofimprobability Yes, but comedy in essence is the surprise and shock of what we expected againts what the comedian saids. For example the most simpre 3 Acts joke is based in the audience expecting a resolution in Act 3 and the comedian making a weird an unexpected comeback. I don't mean subverting expectations as something as somethng big or shocking, just surprise the audience. That's also why some jokes don't work in different countries, because what you expect and the social knoweledge is different. And I agree, with what you said about smugness and self-reflection.

Behind the iron curtain, where I grew up, comedy was often very subversive. But you had to be able to pick up on the clues, read between the lines, and generally had to have an attention span longer than a goldfish. Sadly, most comedy nowadays is quite on the nose. Sarcasm, irony, and subtlety seem to be a thing of the past. But there is still hope, I think. Judging by some 'reaction youtubers' reactions to old comedy by the likes of Mel Brooks or Rowan Atkinson (Black Adder), comedians like George Carlin or German political comedians like Volker Pisper, there are still many people who can appreciate this kind of humor. The woke totalitarians won't win in the long run.

Every once in a while, you have a commentary that really resonates with me. You have a broader perspective than your internet peers and really able to convey just how much things have changed and what we have lost. The Smoother’s Brothers were the precursor to the Not Read For Prime Time Players, which was a precursor to In Living Color and Mad TV. One of problems is that it’s no longer profitable to do that type of comedy anymore. The woke mob will get vocal and advertisers will run. Network exec’s will bend the knee because their priorities are profits. It’s always been that way and will never change. What’s new is that people are tuning out. The world is changing and less tolerant than it used to be. Cable, the Internet and streaming should be experiencing a golden age of comedy, but the public sentiment is not what it used to be. In the 60’s, the colleges were where you could experience the most freedom, but that didn’t happen until Viet Nam and the social unrest became front page news. Those things forced you to take a side. How many liberated students came home to their conservative parents and challenged their views? Ironically, many of them reverted back to conservatism and joined the establishment by the 80’s. It didn’t last, which can somewhat explain why your troupe ran into problems during that same period of time. What we had was special, from free thinking to toy commercials disguised as cartoons. The 60’s made the 70’s 80’s and 90’s possible. Society grew fat and lazy and look at it now. It takes a level of intelligence and education to appreciate certain comedic taste. It also helps if your have an open mind and a broad view. Gen X is the last generation to have all of those traits. Gen Y AKA Millennials are iffy. Many of them are alright if born by 94, but those born after 94 lean toward Gen Z. God help us with them and Gen Z. They can’t read, they can’t write and they can’t think. It’s not all their fault. They have been failed by their parents, school and society. Most of the shows and comedians you mention, they have never been introduced to. Their level of exposure is sorely lacking in many areas. Sadly, many of the comedians have bent the knee. Those who haven’t, like Chapelle, have been attacked. Still, we need to encourage comedy, honest comedy and free (thinking) comedy. Keep doing what you’re doing. That’s why I keep coming back. 😊

I've always believed that Comedians, in stand up and entertainment, have been the ones accepted to speak more truthful observations about the state of society and culture, and would even give those willing to listen a bit of a litmus test on on the current status quo. With all the technology allowing anyone to having their ideas and opinions reaching so many more than even a decade or two ago, no one has to wait for a joke to eventually make it around the horn and to their ears. The irony is that many wanting to be a "social influencer"are more interested in riding the existing waves of popular opinion and style, than being out there speaking their mind. I miss the sarcasm and satire that isn't just a one to one comparison to a specific current event.

Wow. You’re the first person I’ve heard in a long time mention the Charlie Hebdo incident outside of dialogue criticizing the “””””religion of peace”””””. Kudos for bringing that one up, especially since you’ll inevitably take flak for it from a certain demographic…

Disney should change their mission statement from - entertain, inspire and inform - to - garner the highest possible ESG/DEI rating so that Blackrock, Vangard and Fidelity can stuff our stock into every pension fund - that seems to also apply to all of media these days.

I don't always agree with Paul, but he has been so spot on in this and his previous video. Bravo, Paul!

When South Park is considered scathing, insightful comedy, we are in trouble.

We could use another underground comix movement today and an enthusiast press to promote it.

Well said. I don't watch any sitcoms or sketch comedy shows anymore. Just animated comedy like South Park. Wtf!? It was a staple in my home growing up in the 80s. Almost 24/7 comedy records and specials and shows... In 2023...Instead I am pulling out old movies and vids to watch with my teen son. The last one was Steve Martin's THE JERK. "I was born a poor black child" Hey how come Steve Martin hasn't been cancelled yet? LMFAO ☮

I have to say I started watching your content for it’s entertainment value, but I’m going to stick around for your incredibly insightful observations.

Brilliant piece. Your knowledge and intellect always really impresses and educates me …even though you’re a wrinkly like myself who shouldn’t have an opinion on such matters.

Thinking about both SNL and Trump: I'd love to hear your thoughts on the 2008 election, where SNL campaigned hard to discredit Sarah Palin, possibly shifting the balance in Obama's favour, and the media has been trying to do the same with Trump since 2015. Looking back, I think 2008 was when American comedians stopped trying to get laughs and started prioritizing social engineering.

There's two things going on here. One, Palin was an easy target and, two, SNL was playing to its audience. That makes money for NBC. Personally, I would have gone after Obama, also. There was lots of material around being the first Black presidential candidate that tried desperately to not be the first Black presidential candidate. Would the NBC honchos tell us to tone down the Obama jokes, probably. But I have no idea. Thanks for the comment.

At your age you shouldn't be enjoying things? 😂 Were people suggesting you partake in Canadian Healthcare? People are idiots and need to pretend everything they say they are saying to someone's face. It's difficult for us plebs to find/see all the rips and tears in our cultural fabric that have led to modern day circumstances. I'm glad there are people like you bringing this all to our attention.Thank you.

Wait, tou were in the Frantics? That's awesome! I used to listen to their skits on Westwood radio in the 80's. I still remember Bill From Bala, You Were Thinking, and That's Gross (which has one of the greatest throwaway jokes, ever!) Wow! Great stuff, thank you!

Thank you Chato for the SCTV 3-sec plug. I miss you Count Floyd; Scary very very scary. Comedy has become sick and lost. It's a shame that Tragedy and Comedy masks have dwindled down to a pouty progressive frown. Thank you always for your take on current entertainment.
