The hymeks suited that green livery, magnahesion was the best method of picking up stray track pins devised by man kind lol

The green livery is the best. Really brings out the design aesthetic of the model. There was also a CIE black and orange version for the Irish market.

Hi it’s a really pretty model in this livery. Sadly I don’t have the CIE version yet. Stay safe Oscar

I’ve managed to pick up the Hornby CIE irish version of this loco (R768 but it has R758 embossed on the underneath). Been after one for ages. Great video, as always 👍🏻

The box, insert and sleeve do it for me, very nostalgic. The Loco I didn’t have but always wanted. It was a difficult time with Dad changing jobs and pocket money sparse! I did have a young career as a musician (choirboy & soloist) which paid well at the time, especially the TV & recording dates, and of course my prize was saving up for bits for the Railway! Fabulous video again Oscar. Cheers.

Great stuff as always, it surprised me how little changed the Hymek was over the years, I have the later 1970s model and apart from the paper label that would appear to be it, other than the mechanism of course.

There seem to be so many variations of the Hymek. My two tone green one is a Hornby one with ringfield motor and the white window surrounds are part of the body molding with paper head codes. The buffer beam is also part of the body molding. My blue one is a Tri-ang Hornby with the same chassis as yours and marked R.758. It has the separate window molding ( in yellow) and again paper head codes and separate buffer beams. A terrific video again this week Oscar, I especially liked seeing two trains running on the same track and well done with the signals and points. Regards, David.

Hi David, how does your Hymek with the ringfield motor run? I have heard mixed opinions about it. Hornby's switch to the ringfield seemed to have been controversial at the time and still continues today. I don't have a Hymek with a ringfield motor. I do however have a number of Hornby Railways Silver Seal locomotives which do present some interesting problems. Thanks for watching and have a great week. Oscar

Hi Oscar, thank you for the reply and question. When I got it it was a poor runner. On close inspection I found that the carbon brushes had worn in a very unusual pattern. Instead of wearing flat across the ends they had twisted to about a 45 degree angle and worn in an elliptical shape. I replaced them with new Hornby ones and after bedding in it seems to be a decent runner. It would seem that the rivets used as brush holders are too big in diameter as the brushes are very loose and sloppy in there. Regards, David.

I look forward to Sunday night here in Australia. I get the notification a new video has arrived, so it's time for a cup of tea, sit back and enjoy! I'm working my way through all your videos and its interesting seeing how your layout has changed. Were you originally using System 6/modern trackwork?
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 6 жыл бұрын
Originally I built a model railway with my son which was all modern Hornby Railways track. There are no videos of this layout. The videos you see with system 6 track on the outside/elevated section and super 4 on the inside with the turntable and catenary was a result of a growing interest in the older models and the desire to run them and not just look at them. On this layout, It became eventually necessary to change all the Modern Hornby track to old Hornby steel track. This gave me the advantage of the magnadhesion which was terrific. But I still had problems with the deep wheel flanges on many models. So I decided to switch over to all Super 4 in early 2017 as I don't really have much produced after about 1980 and that all seems to run fine on super 4 this is the last video with system 6 and super 4 kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6vIfIONjNN5mNU and this one is first with the system 6 taken away kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4qliYmrj6p9rbs and from then on you can see the development as the layout looks today Super 4 only! Thanks again Simon for watching and taking the time to comment. Oscar

Hi Oscar thanks for the information. You may remember I have the Railway Children set so have been collecting the earlier system 6 ( with the 1/2 sleeper on the end like super 4) I was thinking of getting models from 70 - 76 or so, but I am liking the mid 60's period so think I will move over to Super4. I just like the look of it and I think the 70's era models will be fine running on it?
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon. I remember now you have mentioned The Railway Children. You had told me about developing a layout with the original system 6 track with the half sleeper. I think you may have more flexibility switching to super 4 track. I don't think you will have very many problems with the 70s era models and the models from the mid-60s will benefit enormously from being on the track they were intended for. Also probably much more Super 4 around to chose from. The early system with the half sleeper. It seems to have been very fragile and did not take kindly to repeated connecting and un-connecting (being played with!) or being pinned down and then taken up at a later date. It was very bendy. And there are just so many great models from the mid-60s to the late 70s! If only there were still toy shops like they had then. Oscar

Very informative Oscar. In the late 70s didnt the Hymek aquire a ringfield motor type power bogie, as was being fitted to Mallard (and others) back then? Think also it may have had pick ups on the dummy bogie too. Interresting to compare the 2 approaches performance- wise. The Magnadhesion model may well be the winner....

I think you’re right The one with the magnets Is going to be the winner on steel track. At present I don’t have a version with the ring field motor. Thanks again for watching. Oscar

I have a BR green Hymek with working head and tail lights but the others I've seen (I have another 2 in rail blue) don't have this feature, I'd like to pick your brains OP was it rare or was it the late 70s variant.?

A nice presentation of the Hymek, also a great model railway ! A question out of curiosity: Did Tri-ang in OO/HO also have models for the alternating current system at that time, i.e. with a middle slider? Probably not, since the AC system was not very common in England. Best wishes from south Germany
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 2 жыл бұрын
Hi glad you enjoyed the video, as far as I know Tri-ang Hornby didn't have locomotive running directly off AC from the track or a centre rail. The earlier Hornby Dublo system ran on three rails but was the DC. Hornby Railways as it was by 1979 introduced a very early digital system called Zero 1 using AC to the track but it was just two rail. Thanks for watching take care. Oscar

I have one of the later one of these, with the added pickups to the non-powered bogie,still with the magnets, and the Tri-ang motor in it. It came with a job lot of scrap locos, dough I managed to fix all of them. It needed cleaning, and oiling and I had to drill a hole to the chassis to fix the rear pickups, but it runs fine now. I prefer these locos over the Hornby ring filed motored ones, that pickup system is garbage!
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Sounds like you had great fun getting those going. There's not much that can't be fixed on these old tri-ang motors. I think the models with the ring field motors are an acquired taste. They have a whole new set of problems. Oscar
