Another great video, a lot of noise comes from the serrated wheels, expressly-trains on eBay do replacement wheels, I did this with my triang SR emu and it made a huge difference to noise and now runs on modern track

Hi Bill, I have an earlier version R753 with the original lion & wheel emblems as opposed to the "we don't know which way we're going arrows" plus it's got serrated wheels. On the pantograph front there are a pair on eBay for 100 pounds! They're listed as - HORNBY DUBLO AL1 BO-BO ELECTRIC LOCO PANTOGRAPH ONLY FOR E3002 CAT NO 2245 x2 As this engine originally came to Triang from the Hornby Dublo range they will fit! But it would be cheaper to buy a "new" complete engine off the bay for less than that! All the early electrics before the 86's were nicknamed roarers because of the noise they made - so the model's noise is actually appropriate. Still keep up the good work as I am learning from your repairs.

Hate being a smart ass bill but it’s a Class 81 . The 86 was a later Hornby model .Bachmann have an 85 that you might be able to get a replacement pantograph as a spare , but no doubt pricey

Hi Bill, I really enjoyed the restoration. I have a Hornby DMU and a Hymek and both have that noisy motor - on the plus side the motors seem pretty indestructable! Both of them have received DCC chips and that seems to have improved their performance.

Ooh that brought back memories, 86 class, Class 31 and a Blue Pullman. I think they all had the same motor bogie and they all made the same noise.

Can't have been exactly the same, as class 31s have three-axle bogies. But probably the same basic design.

These must be getting really rare now. Incredibly good model even today. Really captures the spirit of the machines I used to see at Birmingham New Street on Friday afternoons when my parents thought I was hard at work revising for my O levels in Birmingham Public Library 😂. Our West Midlands Passenger Executive travel pass was valid on WM buses but also on the train to New Street.

Dear Sir, The information i was looking for! The remagnetiser! Thanks! I will certainly write Mr. Dodd, but don't know if he will be able to send one to Brazil within a reasonable cost (from me point of view). I may try to build me own with material i find locally. Cheers from Brazil! Love the sheep, a nice gift (the 🐑*and* the game)!

Nice to see this rare loco fixed and running. I do like your servicing methods. Of the several types of motor bogies Triang produced, this is the better one. It has proper armature bearings instead of the plastic bearings fitted to the other type with the 'spider' pickups. A lot of the noise comes from the ribbed wheels which were supposed to aid traction. I have seen these models with the later smooth wheels and they run much quieter. Perhaps the owner could find some and fit them, they have shallower flanges too. 😊
@Titan604

Indeed, I have one and swapped the wheels for smooth ones from a dock shunter. Reduced the noise considerably.

The change over switch on these locos can be a pain,i`ve had to repair the switch on both of them as i run my R753s on my 3 rail Dublo layout picking up from the Trix catenary.The problem with the pantograph is the pivot point on the rear of the pantograph base.By careful bending ,you can get the pantograph to lay parallel and stay down.

My blue Pullman has the same motor I’ve found a way to quiet the motor down it’s a matter of a damper between the chassis screw and motor to reduce vibrations I used a rubber O ring plus a bit more weight .

It’s the wheels that are noisy due to the knurling, If you swap our the wheels it will quiet right now. Also that style of wheel has a problem on modern track due to the size of the flange.

@@robinforrest7680 it's actually my Dad's layout put together in the past year, thus all new streamline points. I'm sure there was never an issue on my c1980s layout with peco electro frog points. Assume universal points are no longer produced? Hopefully modern set track would be ok for triang stock?

If you are not worried about originality Somerfeldt do replacement working pantographs at reasonable prices. No 968 would be suitable for the Class 81 that you have.

You'll quite often find the pantographs for sale on the "Usual Auction Site" but they're at a stupid and ridiculous price. Getting really fed up with the over charging greedy loco strippers and dealers on there. So much so that I've stopped buying from it and look elsewhere.
