Hey Don! Good to hear you are doing well! I can't tell you how familiar I am with what you are going through! At age 57 now and having the gift of hindsight, I wished I had been able to talk to and encourage the younger version of myself. My 40's were tough because I had 3 kids and a wife with a target retirement age of 58. I had to really hustle in those years to hit the mark as I was getting older and less energetic with a slowing metabolism. I was burning the candle at both ends working lots of overtime at the fire station and my family suffered. I held onto my 2 of my 3 favorite tri fives (The historic '55 Gasser, the Gypsy Red '55 Bel Air Sedan and sold the Black '57 Bel Air 4 door wagon) but, I got injured on the job and had to retire earlier than I hoped. In retirement, luckily, I am still fairly healthy, have made up for some lost time with the family and am thankful that I was able to stash the 2 tri-fives in the garage without the wife telling me to sell them. It took some patience but, I got there. I hope you have successful results in your situation too! Hang in there bud!

Don, take it one day at a time. That’s all you can do. Your family comes first then the cars. And it’s always great if they support you working on the cars and enjoying them. I’ve got my 57 Nomad and I work on it when I can weather permitting Sometimes I get burned out from working on it but I can’t imagine getting rid of it (but I will have to someday, we all will). I have learned from you and always look for your new videos!

Your reasoning is correct. There will be time to enjoy car repair later on. Keep the 2 or 3 that mean the most. The others you rescued and someone else will carry on the work. Thanks for sharing.

Man I know how you’re feeling. It’s tough to have love for a car and hold onto them and then others don’t feel the same way, or you give someone a deal and they take advantage of the situation to their favor. (Because deep down they don’t feel the same way about cars as we do) You got a heck of a collection so it’s time to enjoy driving them some and don’t sweat the other stuff. Don’t sell on emotion either- just store them in the back somewhere until brighter days!

Don like you said have to get them out of the weather ,look into the addition to garage ,try to get enuf for all your cars and then just work on them when you can ,having storage for old hot rods is the key to injoiing them as weather in the north east is hard on them ! Don't give up on the life time dream/hobby/lifestyle, down the road you will get more time !! All the best !

Hey Don, you have great cars but I do know they can get overwhelming at times because life continues on. Two years ago I finished a 56 vette that I found in a barn about 10 miles from home. Took me and a buddy 7 years working one night a week and some Saturdays to get it back on the road. I’m looking for a driver nomad if you ever decide to part with one but I know it’s not an easy decision. Best of luck in whatever you decide.

Don, I need to teach you about clear Dupont Emron N500-S clear coat over bare aluminum parts. It holds up for over 10 years out in the weather and nothing affects it cold or hot or anything. After 12 to 15 years it turns kind of a green tint, you bead blast the parts again and shoot a fresh coat for another 12+ years for flawless protection. No, it's not cheap but worth it. P/S I cut back from 20 + cars to just 5. My 1966 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible / my 66 Olds Cutlass sports coup (with W-31 motor) / my 1968 R/S SS Camaro H/T with 70 LT-1 355 (I am the original owner) My 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400X 4sp convertible numbers matching plus 2 extra Ram Air 400s/ and my daily beater, 1970 Chevy Chevelle 4 door post car with a 67/ 327 vette motor with a 700 R-4 and 12 bolt 3:55 poise rear. Thats all I got in Total. The NEWEST car I own is a 1970 and I don't allow ANYTHING with a Computer IN MY DRIVEWAY! If your car has a computer running ANYTHING in you car , park it down the street as I may want to leave.😎 P/S you are with your Tri 5s the way I am with my 66 Olds A bodys. Reason, 66 was the ONLY YEAR to have Tripower on the W-30 Ram Air 442s !

Its pretty amazing Don what you do as far as getting those 55 junkers and flipping them and work full time as much as you do with a family. I do the same with outboards flipping when Im feeling ambitious. Been hiding myself thru these Winter months. Hey Spring is getting close try that ultra fine steel wool on those valve covers maybe you can clear coat them or thin coat of WD-40 or even wax them good. I put ceramic coated headers on my 55 they are rusting at the engine head side car is in garage pissed me off too I know the feeling....

Hi Don, yeah I hear everything you said, taking a little step back is good sometimes, the day is only so long, I know it would be hard for you to let any of your cars go but you could get some good funds for the ones you keep even if you let one go, and plus once the weather gets nice it’s a lot easier to want to go to the garage, thanks for the update, and’s congratulations on the Camaro, I was a senior in 76, and you know the cars you could buy then for cheap, catch you soon Big Don😀😀

Don, It's wintertime, and it's time to rejuvenate yourself. Aluminum will do that unless you seal it. I polished the aluminum on my old Goldwing and sealed the aluminum with high temperature clear paint on my valve covers, then clear coated all the other aluminum. By doing that, it looked new for a long time. Glad your okay and will shoot you pictures of the HS robot we built. It's ready to power up tomorrow for the first time. It's really complex, but it looks cool.

Sometimes the weight of the world turns our projects and passions into a second job. Try not to let that happen. Just take a step back don't rush to make any big moves and think on it. Fresh outlook in a week or two maybe all ya need. You aint kidding about the cars in our area....rough to get a handle on, and trying to make the best long term decision for the car can sometimes be a lot. The convertible does need to live inside. The second garage sounds like a good idea

The answer pretty obvious. We've been here before. Your garage needs to grow, at least 1 car wider, 1-1/2 cars deeper and 6' taller, 8 -10 capacity, with a second floor for parts.. No small task. Weather / daylight / space is dictating your ability to progress, and has you chasing your tail, with the progress you're trying to make. That's depressing. Your life would make a lot more sense, if everything had it's own place instead of having to do the shuffle. It has to be at home too, The last thing you need is a shop someplace else/ away from home, then it becomes another business, feeling like you have someplace you should be when you're at home, that takes the fun / hobby right out of it. I think you need to bite the bullet this summer, with your garage, or a different property /house. It's a big step, but when it's done, it'll be the best move you ever made. Time to invest in yourself.
