Excellent. Thank you. You've provided the context we need to finally "do it." Take it through the circle? Oliver's solo on Stolen Moments has long been one of my all time favorites. So obvious now....

Another great vid as always, but I'm wondering the extent to which the vertical approach and the horizontal approach get you to the same place. Like if you're thinking about available tensions, aren't you always thinking about scales to some degree? I guess it becomes less the same when you're not just arpeggiating the written chord but also adding subs etc

Why do you use the sharp 11? Is it because the F natural would be dissonant?
@strat1227
@strat1227 Жыл бұрын
Check out some of his other videos to learn his concept of "available tensions"! Your understanding is essentially correct though, F natural is a tritone from the B (which is a guide tone and therefore takes priority). So if the score calls for a CMaj7 then he says you should usually be in Lydian (#11) so as to not clash with the guide tone

@@xavierlafolie2856 no problem. I think I was wrong about the sharp 4 though, it's a tritone. The natural 4 is the actual avoid note as it sounds too consonant

So the notes you have available are the root, flat natural and sharp 9, the third, the sharp 4, the 5th, flat and natural 13 and the dominant 7. Makes sense
