Great instructions. Precisely picking out key points in a way that is easy to take on board. By the way, you don’t have to see arm bend for someone to be pulling with their arms. Even a couple of kilos pull with each arm will affect the power of the pull. It take an experienced eye to notice this.

You should do explanatory videos more often, Nick. Now the question I always had: as I lift the bar up from the shins, over the knees, am I supposed to use my lats to move the bar towards my thighs, in order to touch them?
@MikeXCSkier3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Move the bar towards you. Do not move your hips into the bar.

I can’t rack the bar correctly with the elbows out.
@MikeXCSkier3 жыл бұрын
I don't blame you. The cue to turn the elbows out applies to when the elbows go up. The Starting Strength method says that the elbows never ever go up - they remain glued to the side until the lifter starts falling from the jump, and then they are supposed to "slam" forward. For the elbows to "slam forward" they can't be pointed out; they need to point down. So if you want to continue using the "slam the elbows forward" method of doing a power clean then don't turn the elbows out. I won't comment about whether this is good technique or not because people just get mad when I do, but I will say this - what is being taught here is a jump with a reverse curl on the way down. Calling it a power clean is being very generous.
@startingstrength3 жыл бұрын
Wrong. You can't rack the bar without the elbows going up. You don't INTENTIONALLY pull the elbows up because that causes problems. We know this because we teach the clean better than you and better than whoever you think the experts are.

@@startingstrength I have shoulder flexibility issue in that I can’t rack the bar correctly. Elbows out and bar on the deltoids requires flexibility that most don’t have. How does one develop such flexibility?

@@arphaksad01 what do you mean by elbows "out"? Have you tried widening your grip? You might just have long forearms If you try everything you can, and it doesn't work. Just do power snatches

While we're at it why don't we get Formula 1 drivers to train student drivers, professional jockeys to do horse riding lessons and porn stars to hold sex ed lessons in school......... Oh no thats a stupid idea.
@MikeXCSkier3 жыл бұрын
@@jamescollinge3291 What if the instructors at the local driving school started saying that all of the Formula 1 drivers use bad driving technique and their driving technique will not only teach you to drive around town but will also make you a champion Formula 1 driver? At a minimum you'd want to see this local driving school produce winners. This is exactly what Starting Strength is doing. Many people defend the way Starting Strength teaches the clean by saying that Starting Strength says that their technique should only be used by novices looking to use the clean as an assistance exercise for the deadlift. That's not true. Rippetoe has said that his "jump and reverse curl" technique is more efficient than the technique currently used by US and international coaches, that all of these coaches are "stupid," and his technique should be used by elite level lifters. Those of us who find his "jump and reverse curl" technique a bit odd, to put it mildly, have made the reasonable request that Starting Strength prove that their technique is better by producing a champion who uses this technique. Yet somehow we are the bad guys in all of this.
