I worked at M&S for 3 months over Christmas once and I can confirm we were told by managers to be chatty and happy. Usually I'd just talk about the weather. "Bit chilly today isn't" i'd shout into old ladies ears to generally get the response of "What did you say love?"
@TopShadowman9 жыл бұрын
I work in the food hall in Marks', and you are right about it being -10 all the time. I don't even know why it's like that, just thought that the fridges were set to summer mode or something. We're also haggled to "Talk" to customers by our managers, even when the situation isn't right. Had a block come in whom I tried to start a conversation with, but then found out that his wife just passed away the week before... I really do wish that we (the employees) had a bit more freedom as to how to approach people, because some of us just aren't naturally chatty. I generally work my arse off when I start my shift, but because I choose my conversations a bit more carefully than others, the managers see that as bad customer service. I probably need to change jobs, I'm obviously not cut out to stack shelves.

For those of us who have been following you for years, we've followed an amusing man through life's strange twists. Yes we've seen you try to sling a gixxer down a mud flat, but we've also been taken along your own adventures on track, to then being asked - because your opinion is valued, by a publisher to go do the same thing, you've shared your life troubles, children, divorce - you're real. So, yes, there are flickers who are looking for a quick fix of amusement, who can't appreciate irony, or comedy if you like, and those people - fuck'em. They're the retweeters and morons who act before thinking. The rest of us, are just here to enjoy being taken on the journey - and that's why we get on our bikes every weekend with you.

On the internet people of all kinds can find people with similar opinions reinforcing their own, good or bad, making them feel comfortable. However once they fit in they get a feeling they have to be noticed somehow - by being the loudest of the same minded. That's how you get a shrieking, circlejerking mob. /Being a smartass: off

I have no idea how you manage to drive there. We have similar rules down here, but every 10 meters I see either a bus lane that magically disappears, squiggly lines, cycle box, a box before the cycle box, this strange lane between your lanes and in-coming... I considered myself a decent driver until I had to drive there. I felt like a chameleon as my eyes almost had to operate independently of each other.

Oh BaronVonEmbassador, you do spoil us with these videos! You make a good point though, and I think this issue with social media is just an extension of what has always happened with the media. Very rarely do people actually bother to carefully consider things, or even ponder whether they are equipped with all the facts. So instead, the knee jerk reaction ends up as the predominant force in peoples decision making. Sad but true.

Also we are not told to have conversations with the customers but yeah lol some people in some stores do just chat random shit to everyone haha - and at the end of it all, M&S is lovely but it costs a hell of a lot

there is a mass of over-offended people dictating what creative people can or can't do. Everything seems to be rated in an instant now as either being fully kosher or completely racist / sexist / unPC and deserving of pitchforks. As the old adage says; if someone has fun camping in the woods but nobody takes an instagram picture, did they really have fun? Videos might as well have 'this offended me' or 'this didn't offend me', buttons. Where the videos suitable for the widest audience rise to the top.

***** I think we are all a bit guilty of it. The fact that there's a good chunk of people that do recognize this is pretty important in that of itself. Social media is popular and there's both the pros and cons. Yet many people are getting sick of of all this connectivity etc. It's actually incredibly refreshing to see. I notice it when I talk to younger kids. Many of which despise facebook and majority of do not have or want one. This opinion is also reflected towards the other big social media sites as well. At first I was like why not and now it's like good job kid! I sent you I believe two messages now saying it's nice to see the videos come back. Social media can be a good powerful device to connect us all, but it also seems to bring out a lot of anger and this mob mentality we keep seeing. I saw a case recently where someone deliberately knocked a biker off. The mob mentality kicked in and not only was there a large amount of abuse towards the bloke in the lorry, but abuse against other staff members of the company he worked for. Quite frankly that part isn't on, it isn't the companies fault that one bad apple worked for them... Maybe this is because the internet can to many still be a case of anonymity where they can try to get away with this behaviour, but I doubt many of them would act like that in real life...
