Its the same in the US. When my R1 was stolen it was stolen with several other bikes. The police found the other bikes when raiding a drug house. They had many stolen bikes and they where striping them. Mine was already gone so apparently the police couldn't do anything even tho they knew they stolen it. And for the ones they did catch em with, they said "we didnt steal them, some we dont know came by and dropped them off." So the police dismissed it, yeah no shit. Of course with the drugs they tried the same store and the cops chose not to believe it.

When my Suzuki was totaled by vandals, I even witnessed the incident. The cops came by later and told me it's just between me and my insurance company because "they didn't see anything". I didn't have comprehensive coverage so I was out thousands. There was fingerprints, footprints, a beer can, I saw the guy and the getaway car, I knew the guys friends, the cops didn't care. That would have mean't they'd have to write up a report or something, lazy bastards. Next time I call nobody. I'll wait with a crossbow at night and take care of it and one vandal disappears into the night.

Baron, just wanted to say that I think you've come a long way since you first started vlogging. You've grown as a content creator. I know that you know how 'media creation' works in general, since I think have a pretty good idea about what you do as a business, which I won't disclose. The fact that you've started having a face cam itself shows just how much more comfortable you are with KZbin, not saying that you compromise on your anonymity, but it helps the viewers to have that 'connect' with you, especially the ones who've been subscribed for a few years now. Good shit. Good shit.

So on point Baron. After an incident with mine, I have double-bloody-longed for and still yet to see:- 1. Change in Police tactics and attitudes. - Results would vary Locally & Nationwide in policy 2. Change in the motorcycle industry, to include GPS trackers/basic physical security as standard? Above steering locks/immobz - Perhaps internationally may reduce theft rates. 3. Aiding the General Public, Councils & Cities to realise the economic, environmental & psychological benefits of bikes, pedal, and electrics. Results: accommodate secure parking areas, anchor points, helmet lockers, bike only areas.

I used to have an RSV4 Factory, which I worked hard to buy, and as much as I loved it I found it difficult to truly enjoy it, because I always wondered if it would still be there whenever I went anywhere on it. I've enjoyed all my bikes and never had that feeling with the others, but then again they weren't worth as much as the RSV4 was, so I guess that made the issue actually play on my mind. I sold it due to various reasons, but in hindsight (fricking hindsight) I wish I kept it and I really miss the sweet sound of that V4 with an Austin Racing slip-on.

Dang, you speak to me from the soul. When I bought my first GS this year, I rode it back from the dealer, parked it in my garage. 2 days later when I wanted to take a ride it wasn't there anymore.. For me, it was devastating, my first brand new bike I ever bought got stolen before I had the chance to really ride it. Police didn't give a shit. A few weeks later they found it "by accident", completely smashed by a notorious "crash-kid". As for you moving out of London: Do it! I run my own business, too, worked in Berlin (not as fucked up as London, but still a pain in the back) and my stress-level never went down. 60-80 hours a week plus traffic-time left literally no time for friends, family or relationships. Now I'm living and working in the "suburbs" and that changed a lot. In the most positive way possible.

Totally Agree Baron. I was a cop in Manchester, and my ZX-6R was nicked; I thought the cops dealing with it would make a real effort to prosecute for me given I was in the job too. Wrong. I was on shift when an Inspector called saying they'd found my bike when raiding a house. Lovely, I thought. Because I delayed my statement as I was busy doing my own job nicking people, the Inspector decided to let the scruff go with a caution for nicking a bicycle on camera, and finding my Ninja in his back yard. Why? He said 'someone said I could have it for 50 quid'. Sigh. I use an Almax chain now, made in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Regrettably necessary, but i've been told by my mate who's a Fireman that they're an absolute ballache to cut through.

It affected him badly and he still really wants a GS but can't face it getting nicked again. I ride one too and go out of my way to chain it to a lamp post every day. We both earn a half descent wage but it seems you just can't have anything nice without the worry. Oh, and I think London is a shit hole now. 26 years I've been commuting up and I'm done with it.

Hi Baron, Just watched your video, 'Thieves, Money and Happiness' and caught your comment at the end about helping prevent motorcycle crime. I'm a PC in the Met, and deal almost daily with MV crime. As a biker myself, it's immensely frustrating seeing the number of crimes that occur, particularly so because in most cases there is something that the victim could have done to help prevent the crime (although the theft is by no means their fault). If you'd like to use your channel to help, I could offer up some crime prevention advice, and talk from a police perspective about how these crimes are dealt with and what can actually be done to catch these thieves. I could go through the steps we take our end once a report has been taken. This might help public understanding and help people take all the measures they can to firstly prevent their motorcycle being stolen, and secondly if their bike is stolen, maximise the lines of investigation that the police have to achieve a positive outcome in their case. If you're keen let me know, I'll hunt out my winter kit.

Nice video! For a moment at the start there I was absolutely gutted thinking that your GS got stolen. I had no idea that you've been so unhappy with your life. But then again, why would I, right? I don't know you. Anyway, about the concept of "happiness"... I read a phrase somewhere a long time ago and it's stuck with me ever since: *happiness is nothing more than the absence of worries*. That was the phrase. I believe if you replace "worries" with "negative feelings" then it rings true. If you don't have any worries dampening your spirits, no stress, no frustrations, no sorrow, none of that stuff, then you're probably pretty happy. That's the essence of it. I also believe that happiness is always temporary. It never lasts, and it's often very, very fragile. The trick is probably to not let the negative stuff get to you; to not worry or fret so much about small, petty stuff. But I know that's a lot easier said than done. On the subject of money: while money in itself might not make you happy, it _can_ certainly help quite a bit. Like you said, it makes (parts of) life easier, which means less worries and stress, and so a bigger chance of feeling happy. But everyone's got different priorities in life, don't they. Some people are perfectly happy with very little money, while others are absolutely miserable with loads of it. Anyway, I hope you manage to get your business set up somewhere outside of London in the not too distant future, and that it'll take away some of your stress. God knows I could never live with doing that commute every day.

what surprises me is how few people have figured out that there is a really cheap way to secure your motorbike and find it once it is stolen. Just go buy a cheap android or iphone mobile, it doesn't even have to be new or great it only needs to run one app. Setup the free remote security tools that both google and apple offer. Hide the mobile on your bike (I wrapped mine up in black gafa tape) and hook it into your battery via a car charger(costs about USD$15 on ebay) and now if anyone steals your bike you know exactly where it is. Also to save on mobile data costs make sure you have the phone setup so it only updates apps via wifi (my motorbike mobile updates apps on my home wifi). Now when your bike is stolen you just go to your nearest internet connected PC or use your every day carry mobile and login to your security account and run the find my phone tool. Bingo you now can see where your bike is on a map in real time. I have mine on a cheap data only account that costs me $60 a year.

Hi Baron &44teeth Wishing you a happy new year.I love your shows and I relate so much to you mate. On the morning of the 28/12/19 in a quiet court 20miles from Melbourne I woke up to a beautiful day I cleaned my leathers boots helmet and went out to clean my 2007 fireblade that was parked under the carport 8 meters from were I was sleeping and it was gone.Mate I paid cash for it in 2009 and I loved it so much. The police didn’t come either they just sent me an email saying that they will try there best to find it. The bike was old but immaculate and had a special spot because I love John Mc Guinness and I wanted one so much and when he broke the first 130 mph in 2007 TT the next year I had one nothing like his but to me it was. It’s been a horrible week My mum always says there’s more good people than bad But why can’t we weed them out.. Sad days I’ve never had one stolen it’s really really hard. Hi Baron, I feel your pain towards bike theft. I'm living in Ireland and we are having the same problem of bikes being stolen. I made the decision to live outside the city so I could keep my bike off the street and somewhat safe. It's ridiculous the measures some of us have to go to, to protect what we have worked hard for. I'm only 19 and between the stupid cost of insurance and trying to maintain and run the bike, these scumbags who think it's ok to rob a bike really need to be dealt with. Fyi i had the same starting problem on my 2007 sv650 as well, what i did was there are two wire that go to the clutch and what you gotta do is cut them and connect them together. It's pretty much a bypass for the clutch safety thing but if your a knob who starts his bike is gear then you should probably figure it out the hard way. Good luck.

Might not be the same, but on my old SV650 I had a similar issue with the clutch switch. It turned out to be the little plastic switch that sits in a cut out in the lever and obviously closes the circuit when the lever is pulled in - the actual plastic had worn down over the years. A replacement plastic switch would have fixed it, but so did a chiselled piece of wood which kept the switch in the on position constantly...

Great analogy re: the effort the busy's would put in if some scumbag robbed 15 large from the Post Office. Just because your bike is insured it's just a paper crime right? Horses-hit! The insurance company lose out, so they whack your premium up. You're without a bike and have to pay through the nose to insure any replacement. Meanwhile the 'you ain't seen me right' knuckleheads have been organ don'ing your TTX, to pay for the latest round of meth supply from the breaking-bad crew, so that they can feed the lab rat addicts, who have to break into your house and steel all your iPads just to fund their toxic diet. People think its not much of a problem, until they do some joined up thinking. It's not until you've had a bike stolen and your house broken into, as I have, that you can truly experience that poisoned sickening feeling in your stomach and realize that it's much more than 'money' that goes missing, its feelings and memories that you can't get back - like the feckers who took my wife's late-mother's wedding ring. P.S. Re: happiness, you're dead right. I grew up in council owned state housing in rough neighborhoods. But I worked ever-harder and now I've got the 7k sq.ft house, the menacing Porsche, spoilt for choice next bike to buy, yadder. And yet, much I'm less happy now, than when I earned five quid a day as a spotty yoof on a YTS scheme, blatting through country lanes on a red fizzy, and having the time and energy to hone my skills with my lady of the day. You only really need a laptop, phone, bike (any), a hovel you can swept the dirt out the front door of, and a supportive partner. The rest is all willy-waving froo-froo.

hey baron, your clutch starting problems check see if this helps, if the system is like other suzuki's there should be a little switch screwed underneath where them fraying cables are going, removed the connector, screw out the two screws and see if you can flip the switch open and change around the position of the switch, so its reversed in the clutch leaver, that should remove the need to having your clutch leaver in to start the bike. you still probably need to fiddle with cables but you wont need to tie wrap the leaver in. remember it will be opposite so if you pull the leaver in it will not start as its opposite

I've no idea why anybody runs a business in London these days if it doesn't absolutely have to physically be in town. I guess if you do VFX that once upon a time people would send a bike over for a tape or bike stuff over to you... and I'm betting that these days the amount of your inputs and outputs that involve physical tangible objects rather than bits & bytes down a fibre optic pipe can be counted on the fingers of one foot per year never mind per month. So you are left renting office space at a bazillion pounds a square foot in a place that is an expensive time consuming stressful and dangerous pain in the arse to get to, and for all the difference it would make to your customers you could be working out of a little flat over the corner shop in the next village over from your house, the rent would be less than you are spending on running the bike into the ground to get into London, never mind what the London office costs, and if you do have to go to London for a meeting that can't be done via Skype, it's twice a month not every day... I can't see how you could possibly be worse off as a result!

+BaronVonGrumble Case in point, I did some googling and came up with a 'near Oxford Street' cost of office space of about £100/sq.ft/annum, £80 rent + svc charge £20 rates. Comparable rent in various south coast towns & cities is £5-10/sq.ft/annum and I can't believe rates & service charges aren't also a lot lower as well. You'd have to lose a fuck of a lot of clients because you don't have a London postcode any more before _that_ cost saving gets negated... and that's places like Brighton or Chichester, not the village of Lower Nowhere where tenants are harder to come by so rents are hopefully lower...

Agree with everything you said there. I had my Street Triple stolen recently and have had numerous attempted thefts, all of which resulted in some kind of damage to my bikes which I pay for out of my own pocket. All my friends keep saying to move out of London and I am starting to believe it may be the right move. I heard rumours that Westminster council were looking at ground anchors for bikers to use but have not heard any updates on it yet. Another alternative is to have motorbike pens similar to the ones available for push bikes that I have seen around (the semi-circular cages).

Always an idea to check the fairings of a bike if it's regularly parked in a public space, my mechanic found a tracker box stuck to the inside of the front fairing on my GSXR750. Obviously some scroat took a fancy to my bike, and tracked it so they can steal it at their leisure. Highly considering super gluing the tracker to a police car...

This summer my mate had his CBR600 stolen from the "secure" parking garage in his apartment building. it took the thieves 4 minuets from the time they entered the building to them driving off. The bike was under a cover with 2 massive chains on it and was parked behind a big pillar. If they really REALLY want your bike they will take it. Its infuriating and really unfair. The worst part was when the police eventually showed up they really did not care. He even admitted that there had been 9 bikes stolen in 3 days in the same neighborhood. When asked what they were doing about it the policeman just said "nothing".

When my HP2 was nicked in Manchester in the last noughties, the GMP plod about as much use as a one legged man in arse kicking contest, but they did get Cumbria police to send a lovely WPC to my house to find out if the 'experience' had emotionally disturbed me! I know you're not a fan of MAG or the BMF Baron but they have been campaigning for years about secure motorcycle parking, bike bays with a solid ground anchored fittings to chain a bike to. Hell they do it for bloody push bikers and they don't pay VED or spend anything like as much as we do on a motorbike!

What chain do you use Baron? It's a little weighty but a 16mm Almax or Pragmasis chain is the best you could use for high value bikes, thieves pretty much need an angle grinder or some other assisted tool to break them so they may* consider it too much work. Cheap ebay trackers can help as well if you stick them under the seat or in a hidden spot.

You can "hot wire" the clutch switch. I did it on mine because the plug was broken. You just have to connect the 2 wires that to to the lever.

Statistic I heard was there were more bikes stolen in the UK than bought new from dealers, think it was a couple of years ago. Can't remember where I heard it but seems accurate. It's disgusting, what a pathetic species we are. These changes sound like a really good plan for you Baron. Get out of the ratrace while you still can. You've spoken before about not needing to be in London as much now we do so much online, other than seeing clients, so if there's a time you can make your industry work from somewhere else, even if it's not in the sticks, but just a smaller town or city, it's now. I hope it helps to go some way towards cheering you up too. Money is an interesting thing, because it does buy happiness, realistically, because it buys opportunities, activities, objects and security, and that equals happiness, but being comfortable is really all anyone wants. All the best to you sir, good luck

All these stolen bikes you mention, did they have any security features on them? Disc Locks, alarms etc?
@Vlogbiker
@Vlogbiker 8 жыл бұрын
First thing I do is fit an alarm system to my bikes before I take them anywhere, the alarm has to have a knock sensor and a microwave detector and a pager, I try my best to park it in the highest foot traffic area I can find, I mount the siren under the tank not accessible unless the tank is removed, many times my pager has gone off by someone sitting or touching it but my bikes have been safe even though others were stolen around mine and to add to this there has never been any damage to steering locks etc probably because they dont get a chance before the siren goes off. At the end of the day you can only make it harder and hope they move along because I remember once while I was driving I saw a guy riding a bike with the alarm going off and he was in a hurry... so I guess if they really want it they get it.

Sorry to hear about your friends bike. Your rant towards to end really hit home, I'm sick of people, (friends and family) asking me what I do for a living and then getting a "oh, are you looking for a real job though?" As if everyone needs to be doing some top class job and earning thousands a week. I'm sick of this pressure to "get myself a career" and if you don't do that or don't want to you're considered lazy or a failure. People working jobs they hate to buy things they don't need to satisfy their ego and convince themselves that is what life is about. I'm sick of it all.

Welcome to my world. I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and here not only do bikes get nicked, they get robbed too. Riding a Sportbike or a GS around here daily is borderline suicidal, because almost every day someone gets killed while being robbed. The solution, as you said, is either to move out or get a shit bike. I went with the second option, as I chose to live a happy life without much money or expenses. But still, I get to ride pretty much every new bike that comes out because I work for a motorcycle magazine. My job is extremely risky, but I love it anyway. Sometimes I pretend the problem doesn't exist, because otherwise I simply couldn't get the job done (I have to test ride and review everything). There's not much I could do alone against such an absurd situation as the local cops are poorly payed and they end up helping many criminals. Guess I'll have to move out eventually. cheers mate

Did your friends have the Pro Keyless Pro Start Pro err Pro, or were they keyed ignition? Now I'm scared for my much loved GSA LC :-( On the Suzuki clutch front... You can pull off the clutch switch from under the lever and use a small piece of wire to jump it ( in the female plug you pulled off). Just jam 1 end in each side. (If) it's the same as all the start up issues I've had with 4 Flat Fish 650 vtwins. It happened to all of them, after a while it starts working again (corrosion I think, give the contacts a brush up).

Q-Park Oxford Street isn't bad for motorbike parking, if your bike is alarmed it'd probably alert the parking attendants who'd have a look to see what's going on. That being said riding into central London is a pain but when my bike was stolen it was nicked from outside my house :(

The best thing I can think of to protect our bikes is a motorcycle only parking structure, doesn't have to be anywhere near the size as a car park, long term sections and short term sections, all spaces having some sort of steel hoop in the concrete for an anchor, and having someone on guard at the entrance. Try not change too much for it and hope that people have the sense to use it. possibly discounts or loyalty cards, maybe make it a franchise and sell chain lube and that sorta shit too to add to profit, would have to be more of a labour of love tho.

If a £15k car gets stolen it's more important than a £15k bike being stolen, what's the difference? There's no deterrent when all they get is a slap on the wrists in the very unlikely event that they do get caught!

Hey Baron. I totally agree with your segment on happiness and how London is basically a stress cesspit. I'm 23, went into the a typical "City Job" as I thought (and been always told) that it was the only path to success and happiness. After working for 2 years and basically nearly dying from stress (7am to 8pm hours at the best of times) I decided to quit and do something that I was genuinely interesting, but for less money, obviously. You're born with nothing, you die with nothing, so what is the point of wasting all of life's on earning a fat bank account. My relationships also suffered as I was so stressed on earning! Fuck that! Love your vids mate, keep it up. I also think you're based near me in the south so maybe see you around. Peace.
