I've only been selling on eBay a few months, not big numbers yet and I've already had my first genius. Sent 2 pairs of novelty socks, person messaged claiming only one had been received. I was positive both were sent, so asked them to open the packaging and they would find one pair underneath the other. Wouldn't you know it, they miraculously found the second pair right under the first pair. I mean they were different style socks in see through packaging, so even if you turned the packaging upside down, you'd see the second pair straight away. Don't get me wrong, I can be a little less than observant at times, but surely you'd actually check the packaging (not just the mailing bag) before sending a message to a seller. My gut feeling was they were trying it on hoping to get a free pair, but I actually hope that's the case, it's less scary than thinking people out there are actually this gormless.

A few weeks ago I had someone send me a bunch of messages about a shirt I'd listed. Usually if someone is sending lots of messages before waiting for a response, it ends up a time-waster. They wanted additional measurements, wanted money off, kept saying they didn't know where to find things and needed instructions, etc... My impulse was to be pretty curt or ignore them but I managed to wring out a decent customer service approach and turned out the guy was in his 70s and was pretty new to eBay, trying to save some money on items he really wanted but couldn't afford elsewhere. Gave me a different perspective on that conversation, so I'm glad I handled it the way I did. I'm not so sure how I would have handled someone being as dense as yours though, and then refusing to accept they're wrong when they've been corrected!

I’ve had two issues with a seller and a buyer on eBay spent £120 for a sealed halo McFarlane figure that was extremely rare it may aswell not of come sealed and then when I messaged them about it they said it was a factory error and not too be picky but it was clearly taped back up from the seal of the cardboard it held the figure in poorly then gave me a bad review calling me a scammer yet I spent £120 for the item that should’ve been sealed and I wouldn’t care if it was £20 but I’ll gladly be picky for spending that much, I then also had a buyer buy two daleks from me took 4 days so eBay cancelled the buy someone bought them the day later and the first seller finally got back to me asking when can I get another again and can I pay cheaper since he had no money and I’m gob smart by some people that think they can just treat you like this

Very funny, I sold some computer parts to a chap, he contacted me to say I had sent the wrong items, he claimed I had sent him some Yoghurts. A few messages went between the seller and myself. Finally I realised what was going on, have you opened the box yet I asked? no he said because I dont want Yoghurts. Despite several more messages with him refusing to open the box, eventually he opened the box to find computer parts. I had used a box obtained from somewhere that had previously contained Yoghurts, like many Ebay sellers I recycled boxes for larger items. All this despite having his name and address and my sender details on the box, verdict an idiot.

Andrew Hyslop I don't cave in immediately to buyers - depending on the complaint and the circumstances, I only take people seriously if they open a case, there are far too many people who happily fire off complaining emails, hoping to get money off or refunds, knowing that many sellers will refund as a matter of course rather than risk a case being opened.

Sometimes you feel some people are not worth the air space. Someone I know had an issue with a dress who said it arrived damaged then found the person on there social media photos wearing it to a wedding so when they tried to claim a refund case this was used as evidence by seller and eBay saw sense and voted in sellers favour. Remember do your own research if problems arise before contacting the buyer. Or just tell them that’s what your doing first. The uk trading laws are slightly different when selling second hand for trade and private sellers something eBay does not always reflect in its refund policy.

I realize this is 5 years later: your situation is why I lay everything out bit by bit in the opening picture. Sure, it's a lot of extra work selling (especially if the sale is low end) but gosh does that effort pay off avoiding buyer confusion. One example I got re negative feedback years ago was from a buyer who accused me of sending him the wrong item when, truth be told, I never had possession of that item in my life much less in saleable ebay inventory. I nicely asked him to return whereupon he'd get 100% refund + shipping. He said he couldn't find it much less take a picture of it. I asked him if he had me confused with another seller who may have made this error. Nope, no matter. I'm at fault. I argued with ebay over that and all I got was suggestion I sweet talk buyer into dropping the negative feedback. That was to no avail after a few email exchanges. That was several years ago. He is still blocked from bidding on my stuff for the rest of my and his natural lives.

Nic, got some good advice for you. In business no matter what you do... you have to allow for the very small percentages of things that can go wrong. In this case, I would have sent a polite message saying along the lines...”Sorry you are not happy with your item. Please return for a full refund” Arguing with a stranger online is a complete waste of time. You are going to get people like this (small percentage) in this instance, you are risking negative feedback from the buyer. By going out of your way, you can change a negative situation into a positive one. Happy customer....and you get to re-list it. You can’t have 100% smooth transactions 100% of the time. You build these transactions into your business to be able to grow and prosper in your eBay. Although you very clearly in the right. Just sort the customer out and move on.

I am a taxi driver that also does longer Tours, I get an emal for a short trip and a day Tour and sent the prices, when they eventually arrived they totally did not stay on the planned trips and Tours, they covered hundreds of extra kilometers not mentioned on the email. The short transfers ended up as a day to Austria. Luckily I charged them at the end of the Tour and got my money, which was quite a bit less than it should have been. Then I got an email asking for a Refund as they thought I had grossly overcharged them! So I came home half way through my shift to send an answer whereby I explained why the end price was much higher. I then asked If they wanted to cover my lost money for being so generous and wasting my time by having to cut my shift short to answer their unbelievable accusations. A very long email and the original email was included so they could plainly see why there was a difference in price., why didn´t they just read it first? Gobsmacking really as she was a teacher, then I stopped wondering why kids can be so stupid at times. And no, I never got an answer! Some people are so dumb it hurts.

Sorry to hear that. Most people are ok, but every so often i do get some total idiots on Ebay too who think that the world is against them. I doubt unfortunately that Ebay will help with the negative feedback that you got, they have very strict guidelines on how they can and cannot remove negative feedback. What annoys me is that sellers can only leave positive feedback to buyers, there is no option to give negative feedback to a buyer. The only thing you can do is leave a 'follow up comment' to the feedback you left him and a response comment to the negative feedback he left you to give some background to other potential buyers who may see it. Happy new year and i hope your business goes well! Thomas.

To be fair, I did think from the very start he was probably referring to the split and had got confused. May worth clarifying when selling future versions in the description so other people will know for sure! 😂 I do despair of the human population at times, but it’s also worth bearing in mind that you may be selling to people who have different learning abilities and that someone with difficulties may genuine struggle to understand the difference between one type of board that folds in half and the modern version that quarters up.

You can't legislate for stupid. Here the first thing we ask for from customers is a picture to explain the problem. Usually the problem can be explained and rectified almost immediately. Saves multiple emails, confusion and assumptions on both sides causing frustration. The number of times a customer has complained about a "feature" of the item that is entirely part of the design, or not read the instructions, fitted it incorrectly, ordered the wrong size, or tried to stuff the item in the wrong place (ooer!). A picture just clears things up straight away and you can see the customers problem (or non-problem). Then you get the ones that raise a problem in eBay without even contacting us. or issue negative feedback because they're not feeling well today (nothing to do with the product sold).

There’s idiots in ALL walks of life. I put a portable basketball hoop together for a customer, and got called last night that the poll holding it up was installed incorrect and on a slant. I get there, and sure enough it was crooked, because it was brought out to the street that’s on a hill.😂😂😎

What a complete tool, I have the same version and I had that since I was 8 and I've never once complained about the split in the board as I know as a child that it's meant to be like that so it's easily foldable! This guy was blatantly out to scam you Nic as he purely the one in the wrong, as soon as I saw his pictures he sent you I burst out laughing, I've worked in retail before and used to get people make silly complaints just to get a refund or free items or discount! These people are damn right pathetic! Good on you Nic keep up the good work of your brilliant eBay selling!

I have to disagree with you. The buyer wasn’t trying to scam him. The buyer is obviously a moron. He can even use proper grammar in his messages.

I sold a brand new automatic watch on ebay, and the buyer claimed the watch was broken and didn't work and wanted a refund. The buyer didn't understand that this modern automatic watch doesn't have a battery. It simply needs to be wound up and works with the movement of your arm.. Total ebay idiot.

And that’s why I have finished selling on eBay got so very annoyed at some ebayers lying about what I had sold them I mean I did sell a pair of 100 per cent real ugg boots which I had purchased from a legit company but unfortunately they did not fit me so decided to sell them on and this guy came back to me saying that they were not real !!!!! So I got so fed up refunded the guy who was left with a brand new pair of boots for free basically and to mention I am disabled and really could not be bothered with all the hassle and bad fed back I was left so have totally stopped selling now take care Sharron
