I have to wonder why no one has ever submitted an idea to make a movie (TV?) about how this whole thing came together. The whole Jeffery Hunter thing, the Nichile Nichols bias and Dr. King talking to her. The fact tat McCoy had to use the weird leftover salt shakers from the second pilot as some of his medical instruments. The part about the ad guys keeping Spock in the background. It would seem to me--seeing how this franchise has grown--that this would be a very interesting movie.

What makes the second pilot work better than the first is that it has energy and a twinkle in its eye. Casting Shatner was key to this; none of Roddenberry's other options could bring that lightness of tone. Shatner's Kirk in turn helped define Spock by contrast. When Bones came in, that was another injection of humor and energy - he seems ebullient compared to the doctor in Where No Man...

He was so excited to introduce me to it that we watched a Star Trek Marathon together and he explained all this 'Really neat' stuff he learned about the show. I've just watched various top 5 & top 10 best startrek picks & although I agree that those choices are good, they don't include the two pilots. To my mind, these are amongst the best & most memorable episodes. Although the characters hadn't fully developed, the inventiveness of the stories are sublime.
@carlrood44575 жыл бұрын
Given the finished products of the three scripts, Where No Man Has Gone Before is probably the best choice. It's a personal story for Kirk. It sets up Spock's logical nature and his role. He's a bit colder and more willing to kill than the Spock we'd come to know, but since it's a pilot, it's close enough. Also, killing Mitchell can be seen as laying the groundwork for their future friendship. Dehner, prior to her transformation, fills the McCoy role adequately. She argues the human/emotional side. Again, it adequately sets the tone for one of the major features of the show. Neither Mudd's Women nor Omega Glory focus on the main characters nearly as much. I'm guessing Omega Glory went through some major rewrites considering how much later it was produced, but it's all I have to go on.
@TriAngulumAudioStudios5 жыл бұрын
Not exactly, The Omega Glory was dusted off and fixed up when they were really hurting for scripts! And I completely agree with you as to how Where No Man was the best script for a pilot! :)
@francisdhomer59105 жыл бұрын
While Omega Glory is entertaining I always had problems with how close it was to our planet. The flag and the pledge and so forth. It is also one of those stories that wold never be made today, but that is not a reason I don't love it. I like it just don't love it... Yes I just friend zoned it

I find it very interesting how in the pilots, there were no red shirts. It seems that the original command colour was indeed green and not gold as is referenced today. Gold was the colour of operations and it was changed to red. Green remained as the command colour and for some unknown reason, was called gold in TNG even though it was quite clear that in the first few seasons at least, characters like Data, Tasha Yar, Geordie LaForge and Worf were wearing green and not gold as the production staff had called it. It seems that the only consensus was that the sciences should be blue. During the "coat years" of the TMP era, that all went out the window as command became white, science became green and operations remained red. Someone needs to make up their goddamn minds! LOL

"Fun" Fact: The episode "Patterns of Force" wasn't available in Germany until the VHS release of TOS in 1996. They didn't even dub it during the original run, which is why the 1996 dub uses the voice actors from the TOS movies (many members of the German voice cast were already dead at that time). That's because TV broadcasts refused to air it, since they deemed its depiction of Nazis as oversimplified at best and glorifying at worst

Thank you for another great episode! As someone who's earliest memories include sitting right in front of the TV at age 3 watching Star Trek (I was born in 68 in California, so it was in syndication), this has been very nostalgic to watch. Looking forward to the next in the series! :) BTW, did you agonize over whether to show clips from the remastered show or the original? I'll be honest, it's been a long time since I watched the original un-remastered episodes. As soon as the remastered ones came out, it seems like that's all I ever saw from that point on. I have the blu rays, so I should try to watch the originals sometime. ;) I have mixed feelings about the remastered episodes. For the most part they look great, but sometimes they made ships move unnaturally. It's that lack of "weight" feeling that you sometimes see in CGI that isn't done properly.* I thought I had read somewhere that their goal was to make it look like what it would be like if they had had CGI in the 60s, but if that is true I think in some cases they went a little too far in that regard. Here are a couple of examples: In _The Doomsday Machine_ episode when Commodore Decker takes off in the stolen shuttlecraft it's movements look really..."janky". And the same sort of jankiness happens in _The Enterprise Incident,_ as well. During the scene at the beginning when the Romulan ships surround the Enterprise, a Bird of Prey (like the Romulan ship in the episode _Balance of Terror_ ) comes literally wobbling into view. Again, there is no sense of the ship having a believable sense of mass/weight. Both of those examples really took me out of my suspension of disbelief zone. :/ I also really didn't like how the Doomsday Machine's "planet killer" looked, either. There are even a couple of scenes where it looks like the it's just a few ship lengths behind the Enterprise, so the scale/framing is way off. It didn't portray the massive machine of terror very well at all. In fact, in some ways I think the "concrete coated windsock" of the original almost looks _better_ than the CGI version in some scenes. But, hey, that's just my opinion. ;) But again, overall I _really_ liked seeing the cleaned up prints and the Enterprise herself just looks amazing in pretty much every shot. Especially when it fires its weapons! ;) OK! I'm done yakking away now! :P I can't let myself get started like that. ;) Thanks again for the great videos! :) *You can really see what I'm talking about when you compare the movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Universe. The Marvel crew seems to have weight/mass down pretty good, but it seems like the DC films always have more floaty/bouncy/flighty movement where their characters just zip/bounce around as if they were immune to inertia.

Again, you are VERY welcome :) And yes I did, but I quickly realized to make the videos with the original effects would take FAR longer and consume much more time then I had to give this project... So I had to use what I had readily available!

Heh. I realize on seeing the clip of someone bringing in a part to the briefing room, .... it's a washing machine spindle. :)

There was also the patented move by Roddenberry of writing "lyrics" for the Star Trek theme, screwing Alexander Courage out of half the royalties in the process.

Indeed and I did cover that shady move on his part in a video in this series :)

The difference between the first and second pilot is like night and day, even so it's amazing the series hit picked up, the cheap unreal sets the bad acting and stories of the first and second, although both had their moments that peaked interest. They were both similar with the mind altering aliens. The second improved on the costumes and set pieces such as communicators and phasers and the planet backdrops from space and the appearance of the enterprise, while they spent less money they did a better job then they did on the first, deforest Kelly was way better as the doctor and spok given more character greatly helped and the camera work (do to new technologies ?) gave a way better image to the viewer then the first,and also the camera work and the right close up and less clumsy cuts made it way better then the first pilot. I guess as it went on they improved as they went... even the set become less fake then the first and second.... you know it's a cheap budget when bendable desk lamps are used on the consoles.

Wish they kept the phaser rifle....would have came in handy in a few future encounters
