The best representation of the Dreadnought and it's derivatives is probably Starfleet Battles. The basic DN and it's refits DIDN'T have Fighters as such, but typically carried 1-2 Multi Role Shuttles (a faster, more powerful shuttle but not a true fighter). In SFB however, the Federation did field CV's built on a modified Dreadnought hull. The CV variants did carry full Fighter Squadrons including designs purpose built for anti ship strikes.

The first TOS book I read was Dreadnought! Loved the detail they went into describing the ship. I remember it had 3 shields and a hull that could tank sustained disruptor fire. Oh, and an image projector that instead of cloaking the ship, fed false sensor info to enemies. Just effin brilliant.

You know, the Franz Joseph designs got me thinking. What if, after the losses Starfleet endured during Discovery, they needed a way to rebuild their fleet both quickly, and cost-efficently. So rather than designing and building every class of ship from the ground up, they instead opted to design a modular collection of shared parts and sections which are then just bolted together in whichever configuration Starfleet needed to fulfill various roles, significantly cutting down on construction time and allowing them to churn out more ships quickly.

The spikes on the bussard collectors are a win for me, I have always loved the spikes on the constitution class, and is what I have on my own in STO. I am very surprised that this isnt being introduced to STO in their temporal recruit in c store or lobi store, or even the horrid gambling boxes as of course a t6 dreadnought carrier I would guess. The placing of the bridge makes much more sense doesnt it, better protection in case of hull breaches as long as the location of the bridge is classified, enemies when shields were down would probably "target the bridge, full disruptors" and not realise that the bridhe location had been moved. In the place of the bridge it also looks like a sensor dome. The nacelle on the saucer makes sense, all personnel to be evacuated to the saucer in a dire emergency then seperate and go to warp to the nearest Federation facility as I am going to guess that even that will have a sort of limited use - just a guess depending on the wrap engines fuel storage facilites in the saucer When I first ever saw the design many many moons ago, i seriously did not get the dish at the aft of the secondary hhull till you explained your version of it and it makes sense. Long before Galaxy wings to command fleet units and attack shuttles, you would have the dreadnought doing these various functions, though its weapons seem to be lacking for a dreadnought, but I suppose I am just being picky, you expect a dreadnought to be a powerhouse of weapons (basing it from war dreadnoughts we have had in our history here armed to the teeth but slow to turn), I expected more phasers banks, but I guess the design engineers thought that 5 dual banks would be enough. I am going to take a wild assumption that the fighters would also be a aprt of the ship's arsenal. The UFP is never prepared for their adversaries, even old ones to become as powerful, to the Battle of the Binary Stars should have been the wake up call and make them realise that having some dreadnoughts built but not put into service unless the time demanded it would have been a good idea instea of objectifying things with a blind arrogance - Sisko did that at the 2nd Battle of Chintoka and my god that snugness soon vanished, the loss of his ship, the fleet, it was thanks to the female changeling stopping Weyoun from destroying the escape pods and allowing the survivors to return to Federation territory that allowed them to escape, thats just an example, the Federation should never think they are superior in any way and that there will be bigger threats out there that they may yet encounter. Never underestimate an adversary or enemy that goes quiet, let alone an ally or friend, they can be the ultimate downfall... Back on topic, ha ha. The internal systems of the dreadnought seem to be a sort of standard to the 24th century of ships, having backup systems to their emergency backups, this makes the dreadnought quite revolutionary and also much more safety focused for a warship - ironic isnt it? I honestly would have laughed if a 50 year old Klingon vessel took out a dreadnought, that would have been such a repeat in history sort of in the 24th century with a 20 year old out of date Bird of Prey taking out the Federation flagship (yes I know they had the means to do so thanks to Geordi's visor). The Dreadnought literally brought more peace between the three powers just by being constructed, with the vast resources the Federation had, it would be easy to construct these ships, and given the advancement of technologies and skills, the building times would also be shortened as well. Fantastic work sir, Peace and Long Life

"emergency speed of warp factor 10 for 6 hours". That is, of course, old warp scale. The notion of making Warp 10 the demon that lived in the really thin air, that would wreck starships or turn their crews into salamanders if they tried to exceed it, didn't come along until NextGen. The notion of holding emergency warp for a matter of hours instead of minutes, though, is truly impressive. Enterprise' emergency warp factor was 8 for years, which it could hold for roughly half an hour before fuel supplies were bone-dead empty. In later years, presumably with the benefit of a legendary chief engineer, she could push it to warp 9 for about 15 minutes. But to hold warp 10 for six hours? "Aw, man, they took out the swimming pool." "Yes. And the arboretum. And the bowling alley. They needed the space for the new fuel tank. But look on the bright side. They kept the gelato machine."
@joeswanson7332 жыл бұрын
the constitution class has those kinds of crew luxuries that allow the ship to go on 5 year missions without support shows just how balanced it would need to be such as having science labs and crew luxuries for entertainment. if the constitution class was stripped bone dry only for combat i'm pretty sure you could stuff her with all kidns of extra power generators and tanks and stuff for more speed or endurance but ... the crew would go stark raving amd. i can imagine the federation class to be docked at a base majorit of the time as she would probably be too costly or too important to lose like those old Battleships in naval history. That was excellent. Two things. As a kid, I had (have) Franz Joseph’s Technical Manual and drooled over it (also the blueprints but that’s another story). Of course, I imagined I was in Star Fleet [sic] and I was the Captain of a ship, and my first was the Saladin Class Destroyer USS Lysander NCC-540. As a promotion I was given command of one of the new Federation Class ships, USS Dominion NCC-2115 (Dominion as I am Canadian and the “Dominion of Canada”). Ya gotta dream, right? I wrote my own Starfleet history and in my version, the addition of the third nacelle caused issues with the warp field (as mentioned in the “Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology”1980 regarding the ill-fated three-engined Tritium Class) and the ship was scrapped. I also like your version as well. And, yes, next you must do the Saladin Class. I made two versions of this in model form - one an original configuration from Franz Joseph’s book, as well as a “refit” version (a la Constitution II) - both converted from Enterprise models. USS Lysander NCC-540.

In Beta canon, one of the rpgs had a combat cruiser version of the Mirandas, I think. I always liked the idea that the Mirandas with the modular design, could during wartime, have those modules replaced with systems to improve the ships' offensive and defensive systems. I could easily see getting new Mirandas built and then making sure certain modules to make them real warships could be hidden in other cost appropriation requests.

From day one I've always thought the main bridge should have been placed in the center of the saucer section on all star ships. Sitting on top it's like a bullseye to an enemy from above....

If were in beta/non-cannon the Aries class would predate the dreadnaught class. A ship built in the 1st federation-Klingon war. Now this ship is non-cannon/fan cannon.

It would seem the Federation took a lesson from Earth's history and then modernized it and used it to their advantage. What I am talking about is what President Theodore Roosevelt once said " speak softly and carry a big stick, you will go far". The Dreadnaught class WAS the Federation's big stick. Peace through strength. Also, hard to believe that they do not have this ship in the fleet museum.

This class starship's designer had psychological warfare in mind when designing the starship class.

I think one valuable bit that the Federation overlooked about the Dreadnought, was that in addition to its sheer intimidating presence, it's enormous power would have been ideal for colonization further out. It's design is certainly robust to carry colonists and their resources needed to colonize a planet. Providing stationary power, defense, mobility, and basically a starbase level starship. It would have been a secure way to colonize, defend, and add to the Federation's long reach. Also, especially like the USS Vengeance Variant (3 nacelles as well). This beast was nearly a mile long and would give even the most confident Romulan or Klingon Commander pause. It's frightening enough with two nacelles, but add three? Now you got the equivalent of an Imperial Ubiqtorate Base with matching firepower. This would be the Super Dreadnought Class USS Ares (God of War) and her sister ships: 1. USS Shariel 2. USS Zeus 3. USS Yamato 4. USS Sitting Bull 5. USS Gettysburg 6. USS Hastings 7. USS Shiva 8. USS Erlang Shen 9. USS Odin 10. USS Neit 11. USS Santo 12. USS Buluc Chabtan Named after famous battles on Earth and various Gods of War and death.

Edit: USS Shariel is named after Star Trek TOS writer D.C. Fontana and his naming of the Vulcan God of War.

🖖😎👍Very cool and very nicely greatly well done and very wonderfully nicely well informatively explained and executed in every detail way shape and format provided on the Dreadnought Class Starship's indeed Sir!; And I myself have 3 different models of this ship 2 of the TOS design and one of the Refit design that I haven't built yet, any ways I have always liked the design of the Dreadnought class the only problem with the TOS design compared to the refit design is it just doesn't truly have enough Phaser banks or photon torpedoe tubes to be actually considered as a Battle Ship or to truly really be able to protect itself in a major all out Battle!🤔?.

I like how Starfleet brands itself as NOT a military organization, but equips their ships with enough destructive firepower to level the surface of a planet. "Just in case" I guess. It must be an effective deterrent strategy. "This our PEACETIME fleet. Imagine what we could do if someone attacked us and we started building devoted warships. Man, I'd hate to be THOSE guys."

I had this debate w/ u before & u had told me that there wasn't a a Dreadnought class , even though I said it was in one of the old Starfleet tech manuals ,as well as being in the final STNG episodes !

There is NO Dreadnought Class... Dreadnought is a type of vessel IE Cruiser, Frigate etc... This is actually called the Federation Class, bu fandom nick named it the Dreadnought and that stuck... So as NOT to confuse fandom that's what I called it! Also the One from ALL Good Things is a Galaxy X Class, not a Dreadnought Class... AND it doesnt exist in canon at all... That being an imaginary timeline created by Q... We've been through this before...

The USS Federation was indeed an upgrade of the Constitution Class ships. It was so powerful and such a threat that it staved off war with both the Klingon and Romulan Empires long enough for them both to see peace as an alternative to warfare. The Yamato Class would do about the same thing much later in history. And both were literal powerhouses of military might for the Federation. I have never understood the propensity of the Federation for not having true Military Ships in it's Fleets. The lack of an 'Iron Fist' within the velvet glove of diplomacy often led to potential foes thinking that they had more of a chance to defeat the Federation than they really did. Relying upon your manufacturing base, AFTER hostilities break out, is not a recipe for success, and the Federation paid, time and again, for such lack of foresight on it's part. Even though Earth learned NOT to wage war upon itself, it should have never forgotten the lessons of HIstory. A long and bloody history of conflict and horrors that should have guided them towards peace, as it did, but should have also taught them that forearmed is better than being weaponless once conflict does come. Just a few thoughts, spoken Frank-ly
@MrAranton3 жыл бұрын
Remember the Federation is built on diplomacy, sovereign worlds delegate some - but not all! - of their sovereignty to the Federation. From the perspective of any member world the "Iron Fist within the velvet glove of diplomacy" might be turned inwards at any moment and tada, the Federation turns into an empire. Restricting Starfleet's military abilities is an effective way to keep centralized authority within the UFP in check. Keep also in mind that Star Trek stems from US culture, and the fear that centralized authority might turn tyrannical unless it's kept in firm check a is common motif in American fiction. Also: Real democracies enact the will of the people - which isn't always consistent or wise. If the people do not want a strong centralized military, a democratic system will not build (or retain) a strong centralized military.
@franksmedley86193 жыл бұрын
@@MrAranton Agreed... but a core of dedicated and highly trained, fully military personnel and a few ships would not be much of a threat to the UFP overall, and yet would give diplomacy that 'iron fist in the velvet glove' that it needs. Diplomacy is like a checking account, eventually you have to back up your checks with cold, hard cash... or in this instance, a decent military unit to back up the diplomats if their bluff is called.
