Fish and chips are enjoyed by Aussies in every season. Any town close to the sea has a fish 'n chip shop serving fresh fish. These villagers should try a potato cake or dim sims. When I was a kid, I'd sneak off the school grounds with a mate at lunchtime and trot to the local fish 'n chip shop. Depending on how much change we'd scrounged we bought a minimum chips and to share and 1 or 2 fried dims sims each. Those really were golden days, although that only became apparent years later.

I`m UK and Fish and Chips are our National Dish (I love it). They were nearly right about the flat bread as we`d have a couple of slices of bread and butter with it. We make Chip Butties with the bread= put chips on bread, wrap and eat. We also have tartar sauce and cover our Chips with salt and vinegar and Tomato sauce. The Europeans think that vinegar on chips is gross as they have Mayo so only us Brits do this. Even though this is our National dish I only eat it once a week but like to eat Curries about three times a week .

Back in 1970 or so, a chain known as "Chesley Fipps" fish and chips became popular. I would drive down and pick up my families order usually. Sometimes someone else would go instead of I. Turns out the family said it tasted better when I picked up the order. I figured out later that the very British girl was saying" malt vinegar with that?". I had no idea what she was saying, due to her thick accent, so I said "yes" each time. Malt vinegar is the way to go!

As a 4th generation Texan, with a southern border on the Gulf of Mexico, I was always taught that if a fish has a very strong fishy smell, then it's not fresh. Of course, there will be some slight fishy smell, but if it's strong, then the fish is not fresh.

As a man who fish myself and has caught a large veriety of fish. different fish smell smell different as they are. different kinds smell more or less fish. Cod and perch doesn't smell much for an example. while Pike or Bream smells a lot (even alive that is) strong smell usually couples with more fishy taste. So I wouldn't trust just the smell to tell if a fish is fresh or not.

Tell that to the rest of the world, who eat Carp. (us) Smelly....... but delicious! By far the most consumed freshwater fish. It feeds 10s of millions every day- and yet it smells awful. 😀 I bet Carp is what these guys refer to when they speak of "thorny" fish. I think that there is a chef that makes the different dishes. However, a lot of times, things get lost in translation - or some ingredients are intentionally left out. For example - one time they prepared BLT sandwiches - but switched some kind of beef for the bacon (due to the illogical superstition about pork). You cannot have a BLT without bacon.....that is just wrong ! I know it is against their religion - but if I cooked for them.....I would try to sneak it in !!

As a boy in the 60s I bought fish & chips for 2 shillings & 6 pence (that is 1/8 of a pound sterling, the other day i bought the same dish in Dorchester, Dorset (William Hardy's Town) it cost £9! I think that if we had stuck to £ s d (pounds shillings & pence) the inflation which has got our politicians out of so many financial messes over recent years would have been impossible, prices in the 19th Century in England remained stable for decades!

In Great Britain they put Malt-Vinegar on their Fish and Chips. In America we put Tartar Sauce on the fish, and catsup on the chips. In Europe they put Mayonnaise on both. NOTE. "Tartar Sauce" is a mixture of Mayonnaise and chopped sweet pickles. NOTE. "Mayonnaise" is made from whipping raw eggs with melted Ghee until the mixture turns thick and white and fluffy.

It is traditional, but I wouldn't say very traditional. It's not more than 150 years old really and the fish in batter is originally Sephardic Jewish in origin, so I've heard, so the idea originates I expect in Spain. Deep fried potato has probably been around a lot longer in the UK

I was very surprised to see a fish and chip shop on holiday in Canada on the shores of Lake Huron - thinking we were so far from the sea that the fish would just be frozen sea fish. But no, it turned out the fish was a large freshwater fish (whitefish or walleye, I think) fished freshly from Lake Huron. It was really good with a texture and flavour not unlike cod or haddock. The group is always a delight to view. Thank you so much for sharing their opinions with all of us. They are always open to learning and trying new things. Perhaps it would be helpful if you explained to them why many lands do not eat roti/breads with every meal. For instance…if there is a carbohydrate “IN THE MEAL” (like potatoes) there is little reason to add more carbohydrate by way of bread. Most people now try to balance their food groups at each meal with a normal grouping of each food group. 1: protein, 2: vegetable, 3: dairy, 4: carbohydrate. Since they love to learn….they might better understand the different meals going forward. Please, please serve them a beverage with their meals. Water is great!
