RIP Chester. Gone too soon. One of the most amazing vocalists of our generation.

I should point out that the person who wrote the lyrics is not Chester, but Mike, the one playing piano in the video. He's the lyricist of the band, and he writes with an incredible level of emotional intelligence. He's also a painter, and he put that part of himself into the video as well.

I'm pretty sure this song is about chester's childhood, chester had a lot of input on much of the early work.
@PenneySounds6 ай бұрын
@@Darbokst Chester actually said in interviews that he was pretty mentally checked out during the production of the first two albums. He was still using a lot of substances at the time. Mike said last year that Numb was an expression of how he had felt in a relationship at one point. Usually the way they would write a song is Mike would come up with a first draft, and then he would take it to Chester and they would talk about what the words made them feel. Mike would have written it about a specific situation in his life, and then Chester would hear it and it would make him think about some completely different situation in his life that elicited the same feeling, and then they would toss ideas back and forth about how to fine-tune the words so that they focus on describing the feeling rather than the situation, so that any other person who hears it can take that feeling and apply it to whatever situation they connect it to. The idea of this kind of songwriting was to make the words relatable to whoever hears them. Unfortunately what it's done is give people room to retroactively interpret every song as being Chester talking about his depression, even though it was Mike who was expressing himself through those words.
@ShaggyRogers16 ай бұрын
@@PenneySounds The sad fact is that the sad backstory is true for basically every member of the band, and also true for MANY musicians and artists as a whole. That level of creativity rarely originates from a position of happiness, but as an outlet of expression. Highly talented artists that don't have a "history" are rarer than 4 leaf clovers.
@PenneySounds6 ай бұрын
@@ShaggyRogers1 I don't think Mike has ever indicated that he personally has any more history of emotional trauma than the average person. I think he's just very empathetic and very emotionally intelligent, and able to express his feelings in a way that resonates with a lot of people.

It's always fascinating to me how little these folks need in the way of information to grasp the heart of a song. Mashoque needed basically 0 prompting and understood completely the depth of isolation and despair Chester was trying to convey. And he's not wrong you can definitely save a person with even the most offhandedly kind remark. I would know I'd given up, I was going to off myself on that weekend when I got home and I was feeling pretty good. So good indeed a little bastard that ran around on the bus, I played with him had him doing "pull ups" on the hand holding bars telling him how strong he must be yadda yadda. I don't even remember the girl's name she was watching me and laughed then said "Your going to be a great dad one day!" I was stunned that one kind comment kept me alive that weekend and for years if I'm honest. I am a dad of 3 boys now and I still keep it close to my heart and thank God for that little boy and that kind girl every now and then.

I've just cried my eyes out to this video. I grew up listening to this song, but today was the first time I took notice of the video and the lyrics. I relate a lot with that girl in the video and Mashoque Ali Halepoto in particular really touched my heart with his reactions towards the girl. I could see him feel what she was feeling and it was incredible to know that even people from different traditions, different backgrounds and different parts of the world are capable of feeling a shared deep emotion and understanding when it comes to trauma. As a person who's own parents devalued my trauma, this is really heart warming. Thank you ❤

Their reactions here encapsulate everything I love about the people you have found for this project. Their understanding and empathy are beyond the level of many people. Dear souls. I imagine this song had a significant effect on you, too, as an engineer turned artist. Sometimes it goes the other way, too. My best friend growing up, was very creative and went to university to study art (with her parents' approval 🙂). She also enjoyed playing with numbers and took a trigonometry course "just for fun." She loved it as well. She ended up getting a degree in civil engineering. She found she could use her creativity and sense for design both in her work and her play. Teaching values and morals is important, as Mashoque says, but letting kids be their true selves is the best option. They can surprise you. Thank you for another great video.

6:35 ish. he says "kuddos to her" for her cutting herself the word "numb" in her arm.. what a different way to react to someone harming themselves in that way.. in our society she would be be shunned for such an action. so impressive on multiple levels.. he verbalizes his RESPECT for the person with so much power ans selfcontrol to be able to do that painful act. one of the reasons i love this channel.. because there is such a rich new world of looking at things through the "tribals" eyes.. and i dont romanticize, here. thanks again for one of your astounding vidos...

He said that while not knowing the exact implications of it. It may have been worded differently if he did, since showing "respect" for such an act could be misunderstood as encouraging the act itself. The same way "shunning" it is not disrespect towards the person, but the wish to direct them to more productive ways of coping and betterment.

On a side note: If many children say they want to be doctors or engineers, it's not an innate desire, it's just reflecting what the parents say. And it's really disgusting to me that so man parents push their kids into those fields that don't have an aptitude for it (and also that there are many cultures that are 100% okay with kids cheating to get their degrees). These are VERY IMPORTANT occupations where we want people who are truly qualified, not those pushed into it by their parents, despite not having the aptitude for it. And those without the aptitude cheat their way to a degree and/or are incompetent in their jobs. You are a VERY immoral person if you push your child to a degree such as this when they are not cut out for it.

It’s been too long for me to remember which video it was, or which languages he mentioned, but he explained once that multiple languages are used. I think he has to speak to them in two different languages, depending which one each can understand but not necessarily speak, and then I think each of them speaks in a language that Adnan can understand but not necessarily speak. None of that is helpful for you and I’m not at all sure if it’s very accurate except I do remember for sure that it’s more than one language being spoken, depending on the individual. So the channel page About section says that all participants are from Sindh, Pakistan. All languages would be languages used there.
