355 / 5.000 Abdul "so wise" said in Peart's reaction video (15:09) that the band needs a singer who can sing high notes😄. I was just waiting for this video to see his face when he heard Geddy Lee. Xanadu, Live from Exit Stage Left, Montreal, 1981. Finest live rock performance ever recorded. You'll be stunned. Performed live in real-time by 3 incredibly multi-talented musicians, all using both their hands and feet to make all the incredible sounds you're hearing. Pure magic!..

Man...I'm always blown away by you guys!! I can't get over how you're listening to Western Rock Music and giving your insights based on your own background, knowledge, wisdom and experience! Its such an amazing, refreshing delight!! Neil Peart was a very well read musician and pulled from that depth in his Lyrics. Much of his lyrics are very conceptual. Rush even received an award from NASA for their focus and awareness about space which was reflected by their 4th album 2112 and was their 1st concept album veering away from their straight ahead rock and roll music. In fact their 1st self titled Album RUSH was thought to be a new release by Led Zeppelin in Cleveland, Ohio, USA where they 1st got their exposure and airplay in the US and quickly became a favourite with their song Working Man, as Cleveland was known to be a Blue collar or working man's town. Neil Peart didn't join the band until the 2nd album Fly By Night after their original drummer John Rutsy had to leave due to health issues. Neil wasn't a favourite of guitarist Alex Lifeson but Bassist Geddy Lee was impressed and managed to convince Alex, which turned out to be the best decision they could've made in terms or musical and lyrical talent as Neil took the Lion's share of the writing which went well beyond the "Hey baby baby", lyrics which most rock center around; like In The Mood from RUSHs 1st album. The album after 2112 A Farewell To Kings had a break out song Xanadu about Kublai Khan, which really started to establish RUSH as a serious Rock and Progressive Rock Band; it also featured one of their 1st singles, which is still played to this day called "Closer To The Heart". Their next Album Hemispheres continued their concept album theme...the song The Trees is an incredible political statement using the allegory of trees to contrast status and power. It's a brilliant work both lyrically and musically, introducing an incredible syncopation build up during the bridge in the middle. Their next Album Permanent Waves released a popular single entitled The Spirit Of Radio taken from a local Toronto Radio Station CFNY's slogan. However, Moving Pictures, where this song Tom Sawyer is from was /is arguably their pinnacle Album that launched them globally into a world class band like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Genesis etc and turned them into one of the highest record selling bands in the world. Tom Sawyer is a character from a US 19th Century writer Mark Twain, who wrote several books including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, which is an Americana book reflecting much of Mark Twain's(Samuel Clemens) childhood. The lyrics for Tom Sawyer was actually written by Lyricist Pye Dubois, who primarily wrote for another Toronto Band under the same Anthem record label, Max Webster, who at one point were more popular than RUSH in Toronto but due to poor management and exposure by the record company in favour of RUSH led them into obscurity but nevertheless have incredible driving and progressive music written by the underrated guitarist Kim Mitchell ...check out their "Moon Songs" from their 1st 3 Albums: 1) The 1st self titled Album Max Webster(aka Block heads; from the album cover): Coming Off The Moon 2) High Class And Borrowed Shoes: In Context Of The Moon 3) Mutiny Up My Sleeve: Beyond The Moon Both bands, were local to my hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada...and RUSH was even closer in Willowdale, North York near Don Mills, North York(Suburbs of Toronto) so we became quite familiar with them pretty much when they came out...great bands, great music and great exposure and commentary by you guys! Keep up the great work...I'm loving it❣ 👍👍👏🙂

Adnan, thank you SO much for introducing more people to Rush. I'm the woman who launched their career in the US and we have been friends for many years. I am very grateful to you for what you are doing. By the way, that amazing drummer, may he rest in peace, Neil Peart: his name is pronounced PEERt (it's an EE sound) not Pert. Bless you for your commitment to sharing excellent music. Perhaps the guys might enjoy the video for another Rush song, Spirit of Radio. Much love to you.

Tom Sawyer was a character in novels written by Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorn Clemmens). Tom Sawyer was a child and often very stubborn and rebellious but good enough to not cause too much trouble. The phrase most people say is "he's a real Tom Sawyer" meaning he is just independent enough to do things that he wants to do, but still is a good-hearted person.

I've stopped letting myself be surprised by the amazing insight these gentlemen bring into these reactions, particularly their philosophical interpretation of many of the lyrics. It puts me in mind of a famous quotation from one of our Founding Fathers (as we call the men who fought our Revolutionary War against Britain and founded our nation), a man named Thomas Jefferson: "State a moral case to a ploughman [farmer, or farm laborer] and a professor. The former will decide it as well, and often better than the latter, because he has not been led astray by artificial rules." These men are not led astray by artificial rules, but rather are informed by their life experience, and their dedication to things that are actually really real in this life. We could all learn something from their perspective. (Even though Ustad Neil Peart, author of nearly all the band's lyrics, was nicknamed "The Professor." 😄) They still need to see a live concert performance. I strongly recommend "Xanadu" from "Exit Stage Left" or "Marathon" from "A Show Of Hands." Or, to see the craziest crowd they ever played in front of, "YYZ" from "Rush In Rio," filmed on their one and only tour through South America, recorded in a soccer stadium in Rio De Janeiro in front of tens of thousands of crazy Brazilians. Although it is an instrumental song with no lyrics, the crowd was singing the melody lines along with the band like a soccer chant! Even after seeing them live in the United States three times, I still never saw them in front of a crowd that was so excited, they sang the instrumental lines back to the band.

I love you guys because you let your true emotions come through. I too am like that. When it comes to music/lyrics and the soundscapes that were 1965-1980 their is 4 lifetimes of knowing everything from that era. With foresight when I was about 12 I started delving into listening and reading everything I could get my hands on. Word of mouth was huge between 14 yrs and 18(see Captain Beyond or Wishbone Ash). These are things you heard about in high school. It was great. Nothing but pure talent. And if you turned out to be a controlling asshole with your band mates, you usually found yourself in a lesser band and the future success you could have had is gone. That is why Rush are in my top 10 desert island bands, 1974- Neil's passing, 3 canadian kids from the Toronto area, Never gave up hope, (see the story behind 2112) and only changed one member, John Rutsey who played on Rush's first album. Since then an absolute canadian trio that were all consummate musicians. Brilliant stuff. You may get a chuckle out of knowing that for about the first 6 or so albums when they toured they had a reputation as a nerd band because not many girls/wives or any female went to their concerts. You need to show their videos from the 1970s when Peart had an even bigger drum kit. It had xylophones and chimes above it. He played it all in concert. This is probably the band that the lyrics would resonate the most with these men. Lyrics were always from poets and playwrights. They quoted others within their own poetry.

Adnan's music taste is phenomenal, not just this song, but all. These legends are so respectful and insightful. It is quite refreshing to see when compared to the craziness in the west.

As an "old school" Rush fan, I just HAD to crank up the volume! Also, It's not always that cold here in Canada, why right now where I live in the province of Alberta, 3,227 km northeast from Toronto, it is only -8°C!

the lyrics for Tom Sawyer were written by Pye Dubois, who also wrote a lot of lyrics for another Canadian band called Max Webster. RUSH has been made aware of this video

This men are astute. They know more about the human condition than their world knowledge and western world experience would suggest. We learn as much from them as they may be learning from us.

Show them a live version next. Geddy Lee is one of those musicians who can do multiple things at once, so at times you will see him singing the lyrics while both playing the keyboard with his hands and ALSO still playing bass "guitar" with his feet-- the footpedals that you see in this video are actually playing bass tones instead of his usual bass guitar.

The message of the words are important, Mark Twain wrote this story, originally. A Canadian band sings about Tom Sawyer. The over arching theme is the music. Music is just sounds played through physical objects.😊

Great video and an equally great channel. It is always a pleasure to see the people on here and their reactions and perspectives on our culture. (western culture in general) I't would be interesting to see something like this but reversed. By that I mean give us westeners more insights into your culture and the music that is being produced by your home grown talents.
