I met Vinnie behind the Baked Potato around 2003 during the NAMM show. Such a nice guy and gracious with his time even though he had just played the first set and was on break. Watching him play for 3 hours in a small club was sensational! I've watched this video probably at least 20 times. I have it on dvd format from about 10 years ago. Vinnie is still my favorite out there.

When I was 15 years old my drum Instructor took me to Scotland to a Zildjian day to see Vinnie, Tony, Will, my life changed! I came away and practiced 15 hours a day. Thanks for putting this awesome video together. Vinnie, love ya bro! Keep in the groove! 🤘🥁🤘DC

I have witnessed some of the greatest drummers in the world: Tony Williams, Lenny White, Billy Cobham, Narada Michael Walden, Dennis Chambers. And I am very pleasantly surprised; this is right up there. His precision, tightness with smoothness, and relaxed power is breath taking. I've seen clips with Jeff Beck, and Jing Chi, and knew how good he was, but I had no idea.....goodness gracious! Vinnie you're the man! Definitely some of the best drums ever played. You are in very royal company, indeed! Drums forever......

Vinnie has been my mentor & teacher since I was 17 years old, I'm 55 now. I remember years & years ago learning note for note the Japanese Clinic Vinnie did, also the Zildjian Day with Tim Landau on Bass. There is only room for 1 Vinnie but there is no harm in learning from the man himself.

When did you study with him? What was your biggest takeaway (philosophical or technical) from all the time with him?
@jonathanharrington7950
@jonathanharrington7950 3 жыл бұрын
@@gerg3825 Greg, sorry a misunderstanding perhaps. I have never studied with Vinnie Colaiuta personally although spending countless hours year in year out I do feel as if it were a kind of 1 to 1 daily lesson with Vinnie that's lasted years, I'm the same with Dave Weckl. When Dave's Album "Transition" came out it literally blew my mind to smithereens, Drums & Simultaneous Percussion, incredibly complexe patterns which presented me with nothing short of an overdose of inspiration, I had all the gear apart from Bongo's, within 24hrs I'd spent 300 pounds on an African looking LP set with stand, I was ready to rip "Transition" apart. The method I've always used when learning from these Masters is to listen with no distractions what so ever, after repeatedly listening you get familiar with the part, then I transcribe that part best I can which again brings me closer to having an insight into understanding the mechanics of how it was originally put together. Then i program that part into a Drum Machine. It's at this point I start to feel almost right at home with the part like it's now become 90% internalized. This may sound strange but next comes the easy part, physically pulling it off comfortably with feel, dynamics, musical expression etc. The end result for me personally is to have learnt something firstly that knocked me for six when I first heard it, secondly it gives me a heads up as to the Master's inventive & creative mind set, thirdly it opens doors within your own personal development providing food for thought conceptually. Finally, it's musical knowledge experienced & understood just by taking the time to put progress first.

However informal the show might have been, I'm still convinced the Baked Potato footage filmed in black and white was Vinnie's best gig. He was letting it all hang out that night, digging deep into the bag of tricks he's got and really giving it something. Just an incredible performance all around, and something that achieves almost legendary status given the setting in which it took place.

I love how he went from matched to partly traditional to fully traditional on his left hand in his 20's. And the Gretsch cob 5,5 is one of the best snares out there and still sounds the same after more than 50 years of existence.

At 1:01:33 Vinnie mentions Keep It Greasy... However, what he actually played was the groove from the 19/16 section of the song, not the 21/16, as he mistakenly announced - just in case someone is trying to figure out why the 21/16 measures sound shorter :-). Same song - different section... But, more importantly, FANTASTIC PLAYING!!!

In fact, the best vinnie drum solo I think its the one you put it at the beggining of the video, but you should added all the 45 minutes that he played without stopping... I think that is the highest point of a drum solo ever. I cry everytime, and I just cant listening more than 10 minutes without stopping, because the amount of information to digest its too much. I think is a solo in germany, and I think no one can be even close of that level of execution, without stopping, for about 45 minutes long.

It’s interesting to me without getting into the whole match grip v traditional grip how he seems to transition from say the clips in the Rivers show where he plays predominantly matched and then later moved more towards traditional.Its a testament to the man how he could master both with equal proficiency.
