Dude I really like your videos!!! You have a really nice way of explaining things and it feels natural yet not at all boring. It's soooo cool that you did a series of episodes on boosting on a budget. That is my approach as well, because I'm only 18 and I have just a small amount of money to play with. I am also going to boost my d16 Del Sol (however I will (because found out I'm able to) tune the stock computer with Crome). At first my plan was to do it with some creative hacks as well. The only thing I am missing from your videos is a cool intro. I've only seen 5 of your videos so far, but I can already say that you've earned an amazing intro for your episodes! ;) Anyways, I have subscribed and I am already excited for your next video. Im getting more and more tempted to go the cheap route for my Turbo build. Also, what do you know about the whole short nose/long nose crank issues on early miatas? I for one have a 1990 with the short nose which is known to die. Would you recommend trying to swap it with a big nose or long nose crank when I go to do the timing belt?
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Gingium Swapping the crank would require a full engine rebuild, it would be easier to swap in a big nose engine. My advice is when you do the timing belt, pull the timing belt gear off and inspect the keyway. If it looks good just torque everything back to spec when you're done! I have a friend with a short nose, 230,000 miles and 240+ whp going strong.

+Gingium www.miata.net/garage/crankshaft.html Just make sure to torque it to the correct spec, this page has a section explaining it. I replaced my bolt and woodruff key (probably didn't need to) when I did my cam belt and have had no problems.

you never really told us if this worked well and if it threw a code. the flyin miata one changes the signal to a lean condition so it gives more fuel. yours just turns off the o2 signal and that should throw a code. plus it doesn't close until like .4 psi so anything below that doesnt have an effect.
@jefferyholcombe51893 жыл бұрын
Split second fuel injection let's you run two thread in injectors on the motor. Run them from a tach signal and manifold reference. Make your own fuel maps on windows laptop. Flying Miata's uses them on your car to tune around the ECM even on the new miata with the canbus tech. It was pricey @ a smidge under $400 with 2# 1000cc injectors and has great tuneability with a wideband O² sensor. Then factory computer is no wiser to the boost or immediate vacuum. If there is a Map sensor you might have to clamp signal or put a two bar MAP sensor in.

By breaking the o2 signal, you are simulating a lean condition not actually changing closed loop or open loop states. Those are usually depended on load, and tps values. This will still help with using and NA ecu on a turbo setup, but technically speaking it has nothing to do with open or closed loop operation.

I just did this mod to my '04 MSM and i gotta say it feels way better. My AFR gauge clearly shows the fuel getting richer as the boost comes on. goes from 14.5ish crusing steadily richens up to about 12.5ish AFR. A fraction of the cost compared to the old Flyin Miata O2 modifier unit, what a rip-off they were. Also want to confirm that this install is accurate for the MSM as well if anyone needs that info. Just tap into the blue O2 signal wire behind the valve cover and then run your other lead to a chassis ground somewhere. FM's instructions of getting under the dash to do it is idiotic.
@TheCarPassionChannel4 ай бұрын
The MSM should not need this mod, being that it's factory turbo
@MC-qy4xf4 ай бұрын
@@TheCarPassionChannelI agree with your statement, but the reality is that the factory ECU tuning on the MSM was an afterthought at most. Search for topics on Miata forums (MSM specific) such as the Zener Diode mod, ECU Reflash by Chiptorque/BEGI, and Supra injector swap. You’ll find countless threads all repeating the same thing: ECU tuning was a huge failure. People are trying all kinds of solutions to richen up the tuning in closed loop. The transition from closed loop to open loop on these cars is a mess on most of them as well. Some fall flat on their face. Edit- some even unplug their TPS as a 'fix'.

Great explanation why is this whole thing needed. I wish I'd see this a few months ago. One question: what is the signal that you are feeding to the ECU to trigger it to go open loop ? I don't really know how narrowband stuff works.
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Kristóf Kreszán This switch only intercepts the o2 sensor signal wire. As soon as the ECU has no o2 signal, it goes into open loop. Please realize that this modification is ONLY to smooth out the transition between off-boost and on-boost, it will not add any additional fuel while you're boosting.
@kristofkreszan64488 жыл бұрын
Yeah, currently my installation has a piggyback EMB on it but then I'm on boost the factory ECU pulls back the fuel. (2001, MK2.5, 1.6). Will not the factory ECU come up with a check engine light or something if I disconnect the O2 sensor from time to time with this circuit ? I read somewhere that I might need to stimulate some other o2 signal instead just cutting it like a 0.48V.

+Rust Bucket Miata You'll have to do your own research for OBDII car, not sure
@nickelndiminit51368 жыл бұрын
+Rust Bucket Miata So I have been doing some homework on this topic and am starting a 1.8 turbo build on a 96. I am going to start down this budget route and see how far I can get. It seems that with an FMU and this O2 clamp method, it should work. The benefit of OBD2 is that with a scanner and a wideband you should be able to figure out exactly what the stock ECU is doing. It seems the 96 air meter can flow up to ~220 CFM, but info on its measurement range is limited. With a volt meter, I can tell when and if its maxing out. I am planning to do A LOT of videos on this as I go along, so stay tuned.
@RichardGardnerUK8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if the this is MSM specific or not, but on the MSM forums a lot of people have started to also do a Diode modification. The O2 Signal Modifier works, until you hit more than 70% throttle, at that point it uses the TPS. A common problem on modified MSM's is hesitation even with the O2 Signal Modifier, if you ramp into throttle the O2 Signal Modifier works great, if you are in more of a track or race situation your going to be full throttle. At this point the O2 Signal is overridden by the TPS Sensor. So anyway, what people do is install a resister to the TPS to limit its voltage to seeing a range of 10-70% this helps by removing heavy engine braking and also keeps it looking at the O2 Signal Modifier. www.mazda-speed.com/forum2/index.php/topic,14706.0.html
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Richard Gardner That's something I haven't heard of before, sounds interesting! I'll forward that link to my MSM friends for sure. On the 1.6 cars I know it won't be relevant because they do not have a variable TPS. This is my first time going through all the budget work-arounds so I'm sure I'll learn a lot once I start driving the car boosted.
@RichardGardnerUK8 жыл бұрын
+TheCarPassionChannel Ah I see, I'm not very technical myself but search Diode on the MSM forums and there are lots of people asking questions and reviewing the technique. The Diodes are also only $5 and can be removed in a matter of seconds. So its win win :D I still haven't installed mine, hopefully doing it in the next few days, but even with the O2 Signal Modifier if I coast at 4000RPM and hit full throttle my wideband hits 18/1 AFR which is worrying even for a second or so.

Your Cooler and cooler piping will absolutely see vacuum, when off boost.
@B0bLeeSw4gger8 жыл бұрын
+1
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+tangles01 That maybe true because of the restriction of the compressor, but nowhere NEAR the vacuum inside the intake manifold. I'll have to run it both ways and see how it works. Oh and in my other car, my intercooler piping actually sees some boost while the manifold is still in vacuum. I'm going to run dual boost gauges at some point to see what the relationship is.
@tangles018 жыл бұрын
+TheCarPassionChannel I was going suggest running a gauge on each to test, the speed in transfer from boost to vacuum might be a smidgen slower but I would back that in under a half a second it would go from full boost to full vacuum (Full vacuum in this being the cars natural vacuum) within the cooler, while the manifold will be near instant. Having said all that, there is no reason that any of it would be detrimental at all, it should work, just pointing out that it will see the same vacuum that the manifold will.

I also have all sorts of relays with solder joints in them located in my engine as well, and that is with ever car I have ever owned. The reason you don't see wires with solder from the factory is because the OEMs have the opportunity to build the entire harness. Could you touch up on some ways to not cut corners in a sense? I don't have to do this if I use megasquirt right? I'm trying to put a little more money in my boosted build.
@JNorth878 жыл бұрын
Can you do a video on how a build with the o2 signal modifier and vortech fmu will differ from using something like a megasquirt?
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Training with Ciaccio Less powerful, less reliable, less potential, way less options, rougher tune. MS is just a better option all around.

Where did you buy your cast 1.6 manifold from? The one i'm looking at on ebay is exactly the same one as yours, like exactly, but its $855 from "karobskollection" seller. You said you got yours for around $155 I believe. Thanks.
@Coda56108 жыл бұрын
When a price is jacked that high up means they are out of stock and dont wanna remove the lising cuz it cost them more money to relist the item
@sloDOMINATOR8 жыл бұрын
+Coda5610 Oh ok, that makes sense. Thanks man. Guess I'll have to wait around for them to get more in stock then.
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
+Coda5610 Wow, that makes perfect sense. I never knew why that stupid manifold was always listed for $800+
@Coda56108 жыл бұрын
+TheCarPassionChannel yep! They just raise the price of it so no one will buy since they are out of stock then they lower the price back down when they are in stock

I've got the stock afm

Not AFM, I'm asking what AFR's you're seeing. How rich are you running?
@extec1016 жыл бұрын
let me guess noah got problem with a bad O2 sensor and that causing cars to go rich on fuel. had same problem some years ago and failed smog test and engine running rich like hell turns out bad O2 sensor change that and problem solved.

Is there any trick to make the stock ecu work with larger injectors?
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
You can upsize by around 10-15% and that's it. I.E. 1.8 injectors in a 1.6.
@12101DyM8 жыл бұрын
+TheCarPassionChannel Well I have a 2.4 Eclipse. I guess if I could find a 2.5 to 2.6 engine that used similar injectors I suppose. Also what do you think about Capping injectors like mcm did?
@TheCarPassionChannel8 жыл бұрын
Dylan McElveen I think that should hold true for most engines, as long as the ECU can run closed loop properly the injectors should be okay. I'd find out what size yours are, then go a step larger from there. Doesn't necessarily have to be from a slightly larger engine. I actually have been meaning to watch that MCM video, I'm not familiar with the process!
@12101DyM8 жыл бұрын
+TheCarPassionChannel WAIT I'm in luck. Supposedly almost all turbo/fuel related parts from some Evo are direct fit on the 2.4 Mitsubishi engine I have. I'll have to do more research to be certain because Evo parts are expensive and I want to do it right the first time. It's tough because the 3g eclipse forum is garbage
@12101DyM8 жыл бұрын
+TheCarPassionChannel I'm still probably going to use your pressure switch idea, it's pretty clever. Thanks for the upload and all the advice man, it's good to see someone go into detail on the electrical side of a turbo build. Glad you didn't just pull a mcm move and just say "then you tune your ecu" and cut to the dyno shot without giving any real info on how to make the ecu deliver more fuel. Your videos are extremely helpful man. Keep it up.

Hello! Srivo from Italy wanted to know where I can order the sensor ? Thank you✌
@assaultrifle15208 жыл бұрын
hey greg, i got a question; you explained that MS acts as a MAP sensor allowing the user to delete the AFM in a stock miata and switch to a IAT instead... since you're not using MS on this build how do you plan on fitting the turbo? (since the AFM is in the way)
@Leo9ine8 жыл бұрын
AFM is just a little tube you can plumb into the intake pipe. Turbo or not.

+GRIP I have thought about this for a long time, and using SnapChat has sort of been a "test" phase to see if 2 people give a hoot about my daily car and noncar life. I also don't know if I'd put them on this channel or my side channel, I wouldn't want this one to get cluttered up with a bunch of videos people don't care about. And another thing, is I just get sucked into editing and trying to make every video as awesome as possible, where with vlogging it's impossible because it would just take too much time and preparation, you just have to freestyle it. Decisions!!

Hi Greg, I haven't really got a clue what a pressure switch is, and I'm in the UK, is there any way that I can get the same part you used over here?
@Aethrius8 жыл бұрын
He has the one he used in the description of this video, and you could always just google it. Assuming you're planning to use it for the same application (turbocharging a car), you should really figure out what the parts are (he also explains it in the video... :l) and what they do first before even considering it. It's not switching out an exhaust, you actually have to have a decent idea of what you're doing.

I went to that website to buy that on off switch and for some reason when i add it to my cart and checkout it says that my shopping cart is empty. Anyone else having that problem as well? Hopefully this on off switch will help the "stumble or stutter" when i get in and out of boost.

Hi. The flying miata modifier setup puts the signal to ground and claims to pass .3v. This one opens the circuit. Do I not need the .3v? Does it throw a ckeck engine light just breaking the o2's circuit?
@TheCarPassionChannel3 жыл бұрын
The FM unit is the correct way to do it. This is the $10 version of their $140 part, and it worked about as well as the $10 version 😅
