This week on Money Pit, we’re doing brain surgery! That’s right, we’re replacing the factory ECU with a Megasquirt Standalone ECU so we can take complete control over the engine and the way it runs. Then we’ll take it to our friends at EF1 Tuning to develop a tune - can we make any more power with our new brain?

It does seem a lot of work for very little gain until you see what angle he's coming from - example once he adds a blower of descriptions - he can really get the most out of it. This is how I wish the HiLow tuning episodes went. Instead of "Let's get em tuned" 15s later "They're tuned!" Another 15s later "They broke!" Edit: whoa this got more likes than I expected. To clarify, I love the whole crew at donut and totally understand that everything was rushed and on a tight budget.
@GMT-tx2xz
@GMT-tx2xz 3 жыл бұрын
For real. As much fun as it was to watch them go from stock to built (if you could call them that) was really disappointing that the end result for the HiLow Zs was $70k dumped into two cars that both ended up with serious problems, can't even draw a good conclusion from that
@samuelhodge4096
@samuelhodge4096 3 жыл бұрын
@@GMT-tx2xz they were constantly talking about having to get shit done in a day, it really feels like they rushed the series way to much. I absolutely agree that you can't draw any real conclusions from it. It was fun series though, hopefully season 2 is better.
@GMT-tx2xz
@GMT-tx2xz 3 жыл бұрын
@@samuelhodge4096 It's definitely a great show, I was very happy to see the Donut crew turning wrenches together. I can't imagine what kind of pressure it must put on them to have to do all these mods on such a short timeline, let alone on camera - so I absolutely can't knock them for that. I just hope that in future seasons they have a chance to take a little more time to really get all the bugs worked out before the cars (or maybe trucks) get beaten to death because they just weren't ready to be run that hard. I wouldn't be the slightest bit upset if sometimes the video ended with "Well, we didn't get as much done today as we'd hoped but we'll be back at it next week" rather than watching all of this work getting rushed and at the end having the summary be "We don't know if more expensive means more better because both cars are toast." Here on the internet, everyone wants the instant gratification of a modification completely installed in a single video and the whole car built on a rigid timeline, but in the real world it just isn't always easy to do it quickly AND do it properly. As an automotive community, I hope the Donut fanbase can accept that and give the teams some time to really make sure all the mods are properly supported so we can finally know if more expensive really is more better
@PeterKnagge
@PeterKnagge 3 жыл бұрын
I'm still waiting for a HiLow oil cooler episode, I hope one day they will have it. I have to agree in hindsight the series did feel incredibly rushed...
@andrewcowfer5829
@andrewcowfer5829 3 жыл бұрын
The series does feel rushed but it kinda has to be from a production budget standpoint. They can't pay cameramen and sound guys to stand around and film them build cars for a month. The shorter a time frame they can accomplish filming in the better. It just leads to the cars being half finished in terms of reliability. Ultimately I feel like the point of the series was to show some of the realities of modifying a car, especially one you're intending to keep as a daily driver which it mostly accomplishes. Its marketed more casually and is intended more for entertainment than to be informative. It would be nice if they included some more explanation of the technical aspects of building the cars though.

@@fishkluch In Illinois, it doesn't look like they have any intention of a rolling 25-year exemption (that I've heard of, anyway). If you're a 96+ OBD2 owner, gotta stay compliant. I guess we'll just have to wait until next year to see. Meanwhile, unless you go crazy enough to become a cop magnet and the state decides to take a peek at your emissions equipment, 95 and previous is fair game. No biannual check for pre-OBD2
