I’ve tied these for years. Effective all year. Like any fly, some days they kill it and others they don’t, but I always have some in my box.

I don't know. Where do you fish? There's a fly I fish and it's practically a hares ear variation and it's about the only fly I fish now. Works all year, every day, any weather, and very effective in the winter. I want to start fishing more natural flies next year because it may be too effective as strange as it sounds. I've fished it in Montana, Idaho, Nevada, California, Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado with much success.
