I did similar many years ago with a post hole digger. I kept adding sections of piping as the hole got deeper.It was so heavy with the long pipe and I had to stand on a step ladder to lift it out easier.I eventually struck water at 30 feet deep after a months labour, doing a few hours after work each day.I dropped a sand filter on a length of PVC piping down the hole and attached a pump. I had sufficient flow to run a couple of lawn sprinklers

Hope you have better luck than I did. My witcher told me 320 ft. but had to go 600 ft. to get 7gpm. Now pump into a 2500 gal tank during high solar hours to fill the tank and have to use a jet pump from the tank to the spigot. Also had to case the entire depth because of clay soil. Turned a $10K well into $44K really fast setting us back a few years in our home building.

For anyone doing this here's a few tips from someone who just dug a well using this same auger in dirt full of river rock. I live next to a river and the geological survey shows I have Deltaic Sand and Gravel. 1) As others mentioned you need an ice breaker/breaker bar to bust up the dirt/rocks. I welded one up that I could add to the end of my 3/4" black pipe handle and extensions. 2) For rocks over about 3 to 4 inches they won't easy slip into this auger bucket. I welded up something that looks like a lacross stick. Just a metal hoop, with nylon netting, welded to a 3/4" coupling that also screws on as an attachment to the 3/4" black pipe. 3) Instead of using just water down the hole make up and use a slurry of cheap unscented kitty litter ( bentonite clay ) and water. It binds the dirt and rocks better than just water and it makes things real slick making turning the auger much easier. Once you hit water you have to change up technique. 1) The auger is basically useless, except for maybe pulling out some smaller rocks, very small amounts at a time. The water mostly causes everything to flush out of the auger head as you lift it out of the hole. 2) You have to put in an 8" pipe to contain the sides of the hole or the water in the hole keeps caving in the sides. 8" pipe because this 6" auger head is is actually 6 1/4" and won't fit in a 6" i.d. pipe. 3) At this point it's better to use water/air pressure to flush/blow out debris in the hole to dig deeper or suck the debris out using a trash pump. 4) You still have to deal with larger rock so the breaker bar and the lacross stick like thingy will still be used to break loose and pull up the larger rocks. From my experience a gas powered earth auger and bit was useless. It doesn't take a lot of rock to bind up around the bit to cause it to jam and stop turning. And hitting large rocks causes the auger bit to bounce around making a huge hole. Once the hole is too big the auger bit does nothing to lift rock and dirt out of the hole. The auger bit used in this video is much better for use in rocky soil, but you need a way to bust large rocks loose and pull them up out of the hole. This auger won't do it by itself. Don't be fooled by people with their videos easily digging a well with this hand auger in a day or two. They have sand and or clay soil. If you have soil with rock over 2" it is extremely hard digging a well with this hand auger. I'm not kidding about how hard it is. I've dug 7 1/2' and hit water, but water is only about 6" deep after digging on this hole for over a week. I'm thinking of abandoning digging more and pounding in a sand point instead.

I am in an area with sandstone at 15 foot down,the water is supposedly at 18 foot...I am using the auger machine with some specialty bits as well as pounding on some rock chisel bits welded to a 3/4" pipe nipple...I have just started...Hopefully the combination will get me through it all...I previously tried the well point so you'll have problems with it I'd bet...

Im glad other people have a hard time. I’m fairly fit and have hand dug with a pick and a shovel about 7’ down. It is not an easy task. I am trying to auger hoping it will be less rocky, but it’s a lot of chiseling rock with a mini sledge. I smithed a chisel edge on a large 1” rod that i made fit my pwsam auger. The rocks made it skip around and make a large hole so now rocks just fall out of the auger and back in my hole. I filled the hole in and want to restart but it rained hard last night and the auger wants to pull up a huge hole because of how sticky it is. I’ll probably make an attachment that’ll work with these rocks a bit more.

A heavy thump with a rubber mallet on an aluminum plate will send sound waves down to 400 ft. A shotgun blank will thump much deeper. At the interface of water and mineral the sound waves convert to electromagnetic waves that echo back to eletrodes driven in like stakes every 50 ft. or so. With the proper software you can determine start depth and bottom depth of water, flow amount in GPM and soils you have to go throught to get to it. No need to "witch" anymore. Cost me $1500 for two different locations and 5 different spots at each location along with GPM. A small price to pay to find out only 1GPM at 140ft. Not worth it so no well. But boy was 1500 cheaper than $ 30,000. There are Professionals that do this service.

DoodleBuggers... for oilfields. string out the microphones... and the THUMPER truck vibrates the ground so the sound waves bounce off the formations in the ground and see where oil is. gas too... natual gas a by product of OIL WELLS. for the longest time... still is. many places vented (25 x worse greenhouse gas than CO) or flared.

+Red Poppy Ranch Yes, used a section of 2 7/8 oil feild pipe, tapperd the end, and welded a piece of old plow shear for a point/cutting edge, used a tourch to cut holes in pipe,aprox 1/2" holes about 6 to 8 feet up from bottom. we then hand started a hole ( much like you did) then put our point in the ground, applied pressure on top of point with loader full of dirt, then used a 24 inch pipe wrench to twist the pipe as you press down ( if ya want, use your quad, tie a peice of rope to handle n drive in circles...I wont confirm i did this..lol) as it went in we added pipe as we went, ( we had lots of collared ends left over from a coral project) it really wont drill thru big rocks, will break small rocks with a tap or thud with bucket, the concept is it just kinda shoves it way thru more like a displacement wedge. we did pull whole thing out time to time and dump fines outa the stem, then right back in. took about a half a day. after we got into water, the pipe acts as our caseing with a jet pump up top, using 1 1/2 black poly with a check valve down the hole, more than enuff to keep 200 head waterd up in july n august.

Use an electric auger drill on the end of your digger take wire ties and extension cord and run it down the handle and use giant hose clamps to a fix it to the end of your Digger and break all that rock up you are probably going to have to move over two or three foot you're into what's called a gully in the Gully is like a river bank you're missing the water is all you need to drill may be a foot all over north east south and west he'll hit water in that spot it's not deep

When you're working hard, you should never chug cold water as it can be a shock to your system and people have been know to have heart attacks that way. Best to just take normal drinks from a water bottle every minute or so. This also gives your body a chance to absorb the hydration naturally rather that forced all at once. Be safe.

I discovered that I have the ability to locate buried water lines many years ago. I've never tried to find water for a well. My opinion is that this unexplained ability does not include the ability to gauge how deep water will be found and what the flow will be in gallons per minute. Predicting water flow and depth is a purely psychic phenomenon which is not determined by the effect the information has on any equipment or tools such as the bent steel clothes hangers that I use. Although I'm extremely accurate in finding buried water lines I've never had a clue how deep they would be. Just my opinion, obviously, and no empirical knowledge to back it up.

I have the ability to "witch" for buried pipes (1/2" diameter PVC pipes to 6' diameter concrete pipes; all utilities from water, power, cable, sewer, etc) and for water sources. I use welding rods for underground utilites but can use rolled wire and small rebar. For water, I use a fresh willow stick with a "Y" shape. I can determine depth of pipes/underground objects by locating the pipe and then placing a shovel parallel to the underground pipe. The reasoning behind this is it displaces the magnetic field at a 45° angle. You walk towards the pipe at 90° and you will pick up a new "hit" which you measure to the shovel and that is the depth down to the pipe. It gets tricky when you have multiple lines in the ground. 😃 For water sources, the willow stick will turn down with force (holding the top of the Y and single branch turns down to ground). I've had it rip the bark off the stick by trying to resist the downturn of the willow stick. For depth, the willow stick will "bounce" indicating depth. To be honest, I haven't witched for water in 20 years, but I locate objects underground about every 2-3 weeks. I can't explain how it all works, but I believe it's tied to body mineralology and magnetic fields your body gives off as well as the buried area. Funny thing I noted is that when I drink Gatorade in summer when it's hot, I get short circuited and have to wait a few hours until I'm accurate again. Non-believers try it and fail. I put my hand on their shoulder and they walk forward and the rods turn. They either give me big smile or drop the rods like they were bit by a snake and have a look of horror. Fun to see their reactions.

No one is asking spirit guidance of any sort... so it's not witchcraft. There are things of the quantum mechanics realm that aren't easily understood. I bent a couple copper wires and can locate metals that are electrically conductive (such as gold, silver, platinum, copper) an X marks a spot where the rods cross directly above where the metal is at a depth underground of up to 3 feet I've seen so far. Using wooden rods / branch forks might be better for finding water sources. But... we know some wackos will still get offended by things they don't understand. Praying to bigfoot that there would be some tolerance.
