Unpopular Opinion : Deepika is the last 'DIVA' superstar in Bollywood, just like SRK is the last male superstar. It requires way more than acting and looks for that 'screen presence'. Madhubala, Sridevi, Madhuri, Aishwarya had that. The screen lights up with them in the frame.After Deepika, noone in bollywood has arrived like that. Alia is the best actor in this generation, better than Deepika, but she lacks that thing. Very few new generation actresses have that. Sai Pallavi is one of them. Wamiqa Gabbi also has that charm. It's rare.

Interesting take, and i believe is close to the truth. I do think however that with the advent of social media and OTT, the film industry as a whole is moving slowly but surely away from "star power" and depending less on "star presence". You could say Hollywood has already moved away from it - Tom Cruise is possibly Hollywood's last star. Bollywood is catching up, and banking on star power is likely not going to give one much relevance in the future...

I remember during the promotions of "Dear Zindagi", SRK said that Alia shouldn't become "too good, too soon"- that she should take the time to learn to "just be"- because that's a big part of Bollywood. I think Alia never got THAT chance- because she was backed by so many HUGE names, AND was able to do justice to the great scripts that came her way, she never figured out the "Adah" that Bollywood's leading ladies are known for- the art of BEING. We see the lack of that in movies like Rocky our Rani, Kalank, Brahmastra, etc- where, because HER role is not author-backed, she comes off as unconvincing and unlikable. It also comes off in her "dancing face"- she has a terrible one! That said, I highly doubt she'll do another "Shaandaar", "Sadak", "Kalank", or even RRKPK- she's destined to get great scripts that almost ANY competent actor can thrive in- they'll just come to her first. Unlike Tabu, who was way ahead of her times, Alia lives in a time when there are so many great scripts- Tabu, on the other hand, had to unconvincingly muddle through some pretty shitty movies. The only movie that Alia might be stuck doing that wouldn't showcase her talent, or play to her strengths, is the next edition of Brahmastra, if it happens- that was a role ANY incompetent actor could have played- other than Ranbir Kapoor, I'm still not quite sure why Alia even agreed to take it on! DP, well, she's DP! She literally waded through all kinds of mediocrity and below to get where she has- so she's figured out the "Adah"- she doesn't HAVE to be the primary focus to SHINE- case in point, Jawan. Give her ten minutes, she'll make sure those ten minutes are THE ten minutes. She's definitely got then upper hand where commercial and comedic genres are concerned, though she's less likely to get the kind of roles that come Alia's way, because at this point, Alia is seen as an actor, while DP is the performer. Maybe like Aamir and SRK- one is seen as the thinking actor, the other as the commercial one, though it takes perhaps a greater level of skill to get people to accept nonsensical commercial cinema! Also- WRT Piku- I'd like to see another actor, ANY other actor, who can stand their ground against AB and Irrfan giving their very best- just getting noticed, and being praised for HER performance in the same movie where the two titans were absolutely KILLING it puts DP in a league of her own! AB of Brahmastra is not even a shadow of AB in Piku, in case someone wants to say Alia or Ranbir acted with him. The shittiest thing we insist on doing, is comparing the two women. It's like comparing Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal- WHY?! It's completely unnecessary- just enjoy the fact that there are these two stunning, superlatively talented women, giving their best every time for our entertainment!

Even Alia has admitted that Deepika has a magnanimous screen presence which she lacks- which can be due to s number of reasons one of the biggest one being Deepika's physique. Personally I feel Deepika is yet to make a mark in character driven roles. She is amazing in Tamasha and Piku but there were other performances in the movie that were equally good or even better and she was able to play of off her co-stars energy beautifully. But Alia on the other hand dominates the screen with her acting. I still remember the director of Udta Punjab saying that in the scene where her character shouts at Shahid's character (Tommy) Shahid was not prepared for the way Alia just enacted the outburst her character was supposed to do during the filming of the scene. And that one scene is the most memorable one in Udta Punjab. Even Alia's dance sequence during the last 5 minutes of Dholida was so mesmerizing that SLB said that he would take it to his grave! Alia Bhatt belongs to the group of actresses like Vidya Balan and Tabu who are known to be powerhouse performers. Deepika belongs to the group of actresses like Kajol, Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit who are known for their superlative screen presence and ability to be commercially successful no matter what the movie is!

Being an African Indian cinema enthusiast and a huge fan of both Alia and Deepika, I will say both actresses are amazing. Deepika from her initial work to ther most recent you can see her gradual growth, she has put the effort to become the great actor that she is now. Her screen presence is everything, Like what Alia said on Koffe with Karan, Deepika in every frame you cant help but just be drawn to her reminding me me a little bit of Aishwarya Rai, Piku will forever be my most favorite performance of hers. She truly deserves to be where she is. Alia on the other hand is just a natural actor, in my opinion she can play anything her performance in Gangubai and highway are just beyond amazing. Just put a camera on her face and she just becomes an actor, she doesn't have to do much she is effortless also reminding me of Kareen Kapoor, they are just natural actors. I will Say Deepika and Alia are really pushing the bar high for indian actresses.

I like watching both onscreen but Deepika shows more versatility for me in the sense that she is able to fully CREATE different characters. Her crying scenes alone show her diversity. The crying scene in Piku is different from the one in Tamasha, which is different from her breakdown scene in Gehraiyaan, which is different from the one in Cocktail, which again is different from her crying scenes in Jawan most recently. Alia has done well to portray some complex characters but sometimes I feel that she has this stock example of a scene and then copy pastes it into every movie (that's the nose flaring and dramatic screaming every time a breakdown scene happens). In her last ten films, Ganguabai was the only character I think she properly created. In Deepika's last 10 films, she did that with Piku, Tamasha, Gehraiyaan and Jawan for me. Anyways that's my two cents. They're both an asset to Bollywood at the end of the day.

Absolutely Deepika Padukone is the best. Alia is talented, no doubt. Her performance in Highway blew my mind - such amazing performance. But after certain point, she became old wine in new bottle. If you really look carefully, she has different hairdo, dresses, setting, roles but with very similar range and acting with exception in Gangubai (I am rare I think, who thought it was a great miscast). Deepika, on the other hand, has such range and versatility. Sure, people will say that she usually plays with stars and not solo and that is why she is not comparable to Alia who has given many solo hits. But why should that matter, acting is acting whether it is with big star or not. Like in Chennai express (pretty average movie), SRK was the big star but Deepika shone more than him through out. Happy New Year (such a bad film) but even there, she was the only one worth watching . Piku was such a great acting of hers, the nuances she showed was under-appreciated and that one was with two legendary actors and she not only held her own, she was the most interesting character. Even in Bajirao, people praised PC most and I think it was well deserved praises because it was PC’s career best and that is saying something. But even there, the grace and nuances DP portrayed was so underrated. How can we forget Tamasha - a movie I think was her career best until I watched Gehraiyaan. The movie I didn’t enjoy much but she was amazing in that. She has reached that rare league where she can do bad movies but never bad acting - which in the recent time has been achieved by Kareena Kapoor. The only film where I think Deepika didn’t do great, not in terms of acting but the role she should have not accepted was Pathan. She had screen time but it was the only movie wherein her acting craft was not different or new.

Alia has proved herself with so many movies in which she carried the film by herself such as Highway, Udta Punjab, Raazi, Dear Zindagi, Gangubai. She has given solo 100 Cr blockbusters which Deepika has yet to do as well. Most of Deepika’s success has come from commercial films with big stars. She’s basically Katrina Kaif but with better acting but definitely not better than Alia.

I rate Deepika higher now. Both of them are top heroine materials with great acting potetial, but not the best actors. I find Deepika's style of acting more natural understated, while Alia's is the powerful filmy stuff. the fact that deepika could share screenspace with Amitabh bacchan , irrfan khan, Naseeruddin shah without being completely exposed, shows her versatility as an actress. Alia was extremely well in movies like Raazi, Gangubai, but intolerable in Bramhastra really. And while watching rocky n rani i felt the role was just written for Deepika. Alia, a national award-winning actress, played a Bengali girl alongside so many bengali actors and didn't even make an effort to get the accent right. it was a big let-down. On the other hand, Deepika as Piku is the best representation of a modern Indian woman and a Bengali girl in recent times. Deepika in chhapaak was a bit underwhelming, and just fades in comparison to Parvathy's performance in Uyyare. And ofcourse, the kind of opportunities that Alia has got plus the PR is much more than other equally talented actresses of her generation - bhumi, kriti, sanya.. the whole making of a superstar is not just in acting skills but the entire machinery that works behind. Even Deepika had got this advantage very early on.

That is a fair assessment. But many of Deepika’s project she was also the draw. Ram Leela, despite having Ranveer, was riding off Deepika’s back as her fourth hit that year. SLB had come from a flop streak and Ranveer was a no one. She was the star then. So while Alia has been at the forefront, Deepika has been to credit for a lot of her hit films despite them holding someone else in it as well.

Alia has the range , she can adapt effectively into any character without appearing caricaturish . Yes she has the connections and resources to get good directors and scripts but that does not reduce the fact that she is an amazing actor . Deepika in comparison has a limited range but whatever role she takes on she is brilliant. I may be worng but sometimes u can feel when an actor is pretending or genuinely feeling the emotions in a scenes and in this aspect deepika comes across more genuine particularly her emotional scenes . I feel peak Alia is far and above anyone else among her contemporaries - Highway, Udta Punjab, Raazi etc. We just can't see 'Alia' in any of those characters, she completely transformed into someone else and made you empathise with them in a way no one has been able to in recent times bar maybe Kangana. There's no way Deepika can pull off something like that in any genre. Having said that, she comes from a place of huge privilege which Deepika does not have, who wouldn't want a Karan Johar as their mentor. I find them quite equal in a different ways. There are some roles which Deepika does it better and some Alia does it better.....like depends on genre. But Alia over the years became little more versatile as an actor. And Deepika was more focused on growing her international presence as well as maintaining her onscreen presence as a superstar. Alia, easily. One aspect that I like about Alia is the fact that she isn't afraid to look stupid. She steered into the bimbo memes and fully embraced being a nepo kid. And it got to a point where you couldn't make fun of her because her talent spoke for her. I love Deepika but I do feel she relies on her looks more than Alia. I doubt Deepika would have had the same success if she had less sex appeal.

Most of alia’s work has been memorable. She shines despite of being in a film with super stars like shahrukh also… deepika hasnt had a lot if movies where she stole the show theres nothing super memorable about the characters she played.
