The last section, preserved by infiltrating ice, had protected what fleeing soldiers left behind in November 1918. Ammunition, equipment, personal belongings, and snippets of trench life were found. Italian propaganda newspapers, still readable thanks to careful restoration, straw mattresses on wooden platforms for sleeping between guard shifts, and straw that was actually a mix of algae from the upper Adriatic, specifically Istria, were used for their antiseptic properties in the crowded beds shared by hundreds of soldiers. The connection between Stelvio and the sea during the war seems to have been stronger than expected, not just for logistics but also due to a photograph found inside the cave, which immediately evokes beautiful Trieste.
The recovery and conservation of artifacts at the Austro-Hungarian cave shelter on Monte Scorluzzino were carried out by SAP - Società Archeologica srl, commissioned by the Stelvio National Park - Lombardy, as part of the Great War Area Project - Alta Valtellina Inner Area Strategy, file 5.1 "Great War Area Project: enhancement of testimonies and recovery of artifacts (trench routes)" (funded under the POR FESR Lombardia 2014-2020 Axis VI Program) Lot 1 Operation ID: 19014 30, CUP G99E19002020009. The intervention was carried out with authorization and under the scientific direction of the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for the provinces of Como, Lecco, Monza-Brianza, Pavia, Sondrio, and Varese.
