Two things that make faking the moon landing impossible to recreate (I think even today) is that all light comes in 1 direction. and there is no blurr when looking into the distance of the surface of the moon. It is because there is a vacuum, and nothing can refract the light. And if you wanna make a model and put it in a room with vacuum. The model would need to be gargantuas. Because if you made the model small there is a scale difference that is noticeable with the eyes. Also to get the light coming all straight and in one direction then the roof would have to be way out into space. Having the tech to do it at that time is not really realistic as we are not there even today.

I grew up playing chess with my uncles and checkers (draughts) with my grandparents, but none of my siblings (im the oldest) know how to play chess. I've tried teaching my sister and my mom, but they can't remember the movements. I learned chess from my family first and forgot some of the movements before learning again as a cub scout. One of my favorite chess memories was when I set up a board in the "computer room" (very 90s-00s, I know) at my dad's house as a kid. I thought to myself, "if it moves, I'll know there's a ghost here" as people in my family had died in that house. It was a home my great great grandparents owned and a few of them died in and around the house, so I believed they'd be there as ghosts or something back then lmao. Well, I went to bed after setting up the board and when I woke up and checked it, the knight on one side had been played. I was in shock. Even then, I only half believed in ghosts in the first place. Fast forward a week later and I brought it up to my dad who laughed and said he was the one who moved the piece and proceeded to squash my half belief in ghosts as a kid. Lol

Nowadays there's like 4 clubs that just spend a fortune and are practically guaranteed to win, so why would any new joiners care? You can steal signs, it just isn't supposed to be done by parties not on the field or with video equipment. A runner on second is perfectly good to steal signs. And there isn't a couple of minutes between pitches. If it was a minute between that was considered an insanely long time. Finally, people have been predicting the imminent demise of baseball for 40 years. And yet prior to covid, they were still making mega bucks and having huge crowds in all but a couple of markets. The sport will continue to thrive no matter what they do or don't do.

Pyrion so right about the football. As a fan from the football league (2-4 tiers of english football (i'm a pompey fan)) pre-1992 when the premier league was made, teams in a division received the same amount of funding from the league regardless of position. (So last would receive the same as 1st). This led to massively topsy-turvy leagues year on year. Teams near the bottom could compete with teams with larger followings ans stadiums. It was like a benchmark. However, post-92 with the prem funding is now split, 1st gets more than 2nd more than 3rd etc all the way down to 20th who receive the least, this quickly meant that Man Utd, Liverpool who inherited great teams from the transisiton snowballed with high finishes, allowing them to spend moeny on adverting in Asia and their academy. Economic snowball leaving clubs in the old Football league behind. Very sad. @pyrionflax

Pyrion's point about religious people being more likely to believe in conspiracy theories doesn't really apply at all in the UK. The sorts of conspiracies we usually see in the media and on the internet are often much more connected to right wing American groups and their paranoia of the government, and those groups also tend to be religious as it's seen as a conservative value. I've met tons of brits who believe in conspiracy theories in the UK and very few of them have been religious. The very few British Christians I've met who believe in conspiracies are those who have been really influenced by American media, who are also Trump supporters etc.

I see your point about religion, but I think it's more correlation than causation. I think that the kind of person who believes in conspiracy theories also gets hooked into religion easily, for similar reasons. But there are tons of people who are religious who wouldn't fall for conspiracy theories. I'm a Christian in the Bible Belt, and even here, I know tons of Christians who are logical and scientific-minded. You might be better on track when you specified fundamentalists, but I don't know enough of them to speak about it fairly. I just know about the religious beliefs that make them fundamentalists. They're definitely more likely to believe things like the Earth being only 6,000 years old, though. Don't get me wrong, I definitely know several Christians who believe a lot of anti-science stuff, and the proportion obviously varies by area, even here in the US South. But it's definitely just a subsection of us.

Its such a simple critique of religions. Not all religous followers think everything in the bible LITERALLY happened. Because some christians don't, thats usually orthadox teachings, however also the case that the narrative of the bible holds such profound metaphorical and meaningful truth that they believe it so. Pyrion has like half of a good point when it comes to the whole religious faith thing being similar to blind faith in conspiracy theories. What I'd point out though is that a lot of people have personal religious experiences which they get "evidence" from for themselves, while conspiracy nuts are only ever operating on "evidence" that can be explained away logically. It's not quite the same. Having said said that, a lot of religious fundamentalists *cough America cough* are much more comparable to cults and conspiracy nuts blindly following charismatic sleaze bags with their own agendas. The key warning sign is constant teaching from the experiences and thoughts of the leader rather than studying those of Biblical figures. They'll just present a web of lies and isolationism while waving a conspicuously unopened Bible around to draw in the sorts of people Pyrion was discussing who are willing to just blindly follow something that captivates them. Those are the religious people who are making up the bulk of conspiracy theorists.
