Honestly, the American Hospital system is EXCLUSIVELY private, and EVERYTHING cost a fortune. One my brother popped his arm out of his shoulder socket, and when the nurse was having my mom move his arm for the X-Ray she accidentally popped it back in. The X-Rays were never taken, and after 3 fucking hours of waiting, came back with a $400 hospital bill. Go America. We are best, or something.

UK: Wait six hours to get told that it's fine and you should just take a painkiller and go home. US: Wait six hours to get told it's fine, you should just take a painkiller and go home, that'll be all your material possessions, and you need to sign this to give us ownership of your soul once you die. If I had the option, I'd face long wait times any day over having absolutely no chance of getting treatment for something EVER because I can't afford it. But it's not a choice between those in the first place. Privatized healthcare means long wait times and corners cut to save money, AND it makes you broke. But, I guess we should just keep letting people die of easily curable conditions because they don't have enough green paper. Because anything else would be COMMUNISIM.
@jarlbreadmaker

You'll find most nations with average or better healthcare tend to mix private and public. Generally that's how I think most stuff should run, but eh, that means I'm a capitalist pig or communist scum according to some.

I've gone through a bunch of symptoms this month, been to the ER three times (spit up blood, chest and shoulder pain), main hospital at the heart clinic once (they said it was a heartsac virus), in for an x-ray (to check for lung cancer), the GP and a gastro surgeon for an endoscopy (to check for an ulcer - it sucked balls). I still have chest pains and occasionally spit up blood. Don'tmake my mistake and be patient, don't be a "team player", complain as much as you can and don't accept bullshit answers from the doctors. They have an education and experience, but they jump to conclusions and default to "it's probably just this" when they don't know what's wrong, in the hopes of you getting better in the meanwhile.

Generally. We do miss some stuff, usually with things like abdominal pain (could be gastritis, could be AAA, who knows! You get an acuity 3 whee) unless you look pretty awful. With cut and dry injuries if you're stable you wait. Honestly it makes me mad when people get up in my face about their wait times after I spent hours taking care of an unstable asthmatic or something. Yeah I know your knee hurts but you're breathing buddy.

Over here in the states if it doesn't take at least three hours it's a miracle. I had cellulitis. I knew I had it. I went in when it was completely dead. I dealt with the receptionist. I stated "I have cellulitis, these are the symptoms, all I need are antibiotics." Two hours later a doctor rolled around and looked at it for five seconds then gave me the antibiotics.

When I was in 7th grade, a girl at my middle school died because her appendix bursted when she was waiting in the ER for a nurse to look at her. The school did the proper thing and said if anyone needed it they hired a couple of grief counselors for people who know her or were generally upset, mainly because a student died.

The point about the hospital system is 100% right. When I had to take my mum to the hospital because she tried to overdose on pills after discovering my dad had an affair. We told the receptionist what the problem was and still hadn't been seen by a doctor almost two hours later. While I was desperately trying not to let my mum fall asleep my grandma went to the receptionist and told her the problem again explaining how ridiculous it was we hadn't been seen yet. It was ONLY THEN the receptionist asked what the drugs were, and when we explained they were Beta Blockers (designed to slow down your heart rate) we were seen to immediately. What Pyrian is talking about is absolutely right, the system we have in determining queues is ridiculous.

I know Pyrion won't read this but I had the literal experience he described with appendicitis in January. I went to the GP 2 times describing my symptoms and then about 5 days later I was still felt horrible so I went to A&E and sat there for about 2 hours throwing up in agony. By the time I saw a doctor and had a bed my appendix had perforated and infected fluid pockets were filling the area around it and forming abscesses to the point where I couldn't get surgery. So I had to deal with a perforated appendix and agony for an extra week in hospital whilst on strong antibiotics simply because a specialist wouldn't see me before a receptionist.

I broke my wrist so badly it looked like a swans neck and I sat in A+E for about 3 hours before I had to beg to be seen by the doctors and nurses. When I first arrived some jobsworth gave me 1 paracetamol for the pain. The highlight of the evening was watching some yanks trying to give a nurse money for unprescribed drugs and then tweeting about how shit the British NHS was when it didn't work. Best way to tell if something is broken is wait 5-10 minutes and if it doesn't hurt and you're sweating cold, it's definitely broken. The adrenaline kicks in as a natural pain killer and it doesn't hurt too bad until your body can't produce any more natural pain killer. Dunno what the cold sweat is about but it's happened every time I broke something.

the A&E story sounds like a Mix of under staffing and tech that does not intergrate with eachother well, also more places need to do it like bristol, A chrildrens hospital and A&E that is seprate from the adult hospital so drunkards dont clog up stuff for children and concerned pairents dont have to worry about clogging up adult A&E(although non-serious stuff that can be solved with first aid that should be dealt with by the parents or a pharmacy)

I'm just going to defend the NHS a little here It sounds like Pyrion had a bad experience and his recollection of it does a huge disservice for an institution that has done so much for me and my family. At the beginning of this year i ripped the ends of my fingers off whilst working on my motorcycle. Blood everywhere lot's of pain. My dad drove me to the hospital. I had to talk to the receptionist but i was only waiting maybe a few minutes before they got me into see a nurse who stopped the bleeding and then a maybe 10 minutes to put me through into an Xray to make sure i hadn't damaged the ends of the bones. Once i had been patched up and made safe i was sent home and came back the next day to have my fingers operated on. It all went very well and the waiting room was pretty busy when i got there so it wasn't like i happened to get there at a good time. Also My sister was born with a serious heart condition and without the NHS i have no idea how long she would have lasted, or how my parents would have dealt any kind of health plan.

i was going down a steep hill in my street and i had my legs off the peddles failing around and my leg some how got caught in the spokes of my wheel and i go flying like 7 feet over my handle bars and role another meter and all the skin on my arms, legs, solders, elbows and knees was gone.

I was riding my bike once, fell off it and my knee got cut opened and I had to wait for about 3hrs for a x-ray(to see if anything went inside my knee) and another 3hrs to get it stitched up

@ 4:30 Exact same thing happened to me and my dad. Lost one of my front tooth hehe. Even with him throwing himself underneath me.

Pflax advocating penalties for going to A&E for stuff a GP can do when he's done it. Cal Adoc (the non emergency NHS number) on 101 and they'll advise on whether to go to the GP and get it wrapped or prescribed for or to go to A&E.
