The action of sartorius is to put the lower limbs in the seated cross-legged position of the tailor (hence its name from the Latin "sartor" meaning tailor).
The sartorius decelerates extension and medial rotation at the hip joint and extension at the knee.
Muscles with baby or satellite myofascial trigger points to consider include rectus femoris, vastus medialis, pectineus, and adductor longus, brevis, and magnus.
Pain from trigger points in this muscle is typically felt as a severe burning or sharp tingling pain or sensation.
This pain is experienced along the anterior but mostly medial aspect of the thigh and kneecap.
Typically, this is not felt as a deep knee pain, but where it is, be sure to test for chondromalacia patellae (runner’s knee).

Thanks a lot! Any good for avoiding the femoral nerve when trying to release trigger points in the upper part of the sartorius? Are there any sure signs when you start applying pressure?

Hi Thomas, The femoral nerve passes under Sartorius, so too much pressure may cause compression of the femoral nerve leading to signs of parasthesia and pain. It is recommended as with all Trigger point treatment that one is cautious around neural structures and try not to press on them. One can try to isolate the muscle by getting the patient/client to carry out the relevant movement to emphasize the muscle, and then try lifting the muscle up in a pincer grip, (as much as it will allow) before treating. Hi... Could you tell me if the Sartorius Muscle can get swollen. I am suffering from what feels like a swollen band along the edge of my hip got down into the inside of my leg..... It makes it hard to drive as I get pain behind my leg and when I lift my knee I get a strong very uncomfortable pull inside my groin... Do you think I have an inflamed Sartorius Muscle. Thank you

My sartorius muscle was very swollen when mine had been strained while squatting. It had also bruised a fair bit. I felt the same swollen band feeling as well.
