When I was a child my parents insisted that I had to get all those stupid card things for birthdays, mother's day, etc... Waste of money! One year I forgot all about mother's day until the actual day, when I went downstairs and mum asked where her card was. I told her that "just for that" she wasn't going to get her card until later on and that she needed to learn not to demand things etc... You know, the way a parent should respond when the very first thing a child says on their birthday is "where are my presents?". It wasn't like I could suddenly go out for the couple of hours it would take to walk to a shop and buy a card without it being really obvious, so I improvised. It was clearly obvious that I had forgotten the card, and I had several comments during the day of did I need to go to the shop to get some sweets? No thanks, I'm fine (not obvious!). Dad said he was going in to a local computer shop and did I want to come with him? "nope, I'm busy doing stuff" (you can probably guess I was the sort of child where saying no to that was in itself very suspicious!). They were clearly wondering what I had planned because they gave me lots of excuses to go to the card shop "without mum knowing" and I rejected every option. Later in the evening I finally came downstairs and said "OK, as you haven't asked about it again you can have your card now..." and handed mum a piece of paper that had been folded twice (because paper isn't as strong a card, so you need to fold the A4 down to A5 for rigidity, then fold the resulting A5 in half for the card) with some stick figures on the front drawn with felt tip pen and something about loving my mummy or whatever, along with some flowers that had clearly been picked from the garden. I should mention that I was probably about 11-12 years old, so the choice of a 4-year-old artistic style was obviously deliberate and intentional and nothing to do with my inability to draw. Of course, it worked and my mum loved the personal touch and effort etc that I went to instead of simply buying a card like everyone else... (How long does it take to fold a piece of paper and draw some stick figures? How long to go to the card shop and find something?) It was over a year before my dad commented that I was even more of a cheapskate than him. The next birthday that came up I had bought a packet of card from the stationery shop, which cost less than buying a single card from the card shop, and had been using that same pack for every card since then. I of course was offended! How could he accuse me of only caring about the cost savings! I suspect he was just jealous about the fact that he couldn't copy my genius cost saving idea. (I should mention that I cared more about perfecting laziness, and levelling up my cheapskate factor at the same time was just a bonus) He had made that comment a couple of times before it came around to his turn again, so I needed to do something special for his next card. My drawing tool of choice for his extra special "it's the effort I put in!" card was probably 15 minutes in mspaint.exe (way longer than I spent on any other card)... no comments were made about who paid for the ink cartridges in dad's expensive colour printer! ;)

Basically, they'd started a misery machine that couldn't be stopped - and judging from his mood, he knew this well enough to keep a bottle of Mcellan close by. Madness. My Family on my Dad's side did this, but when we moved to the other side of the country to be with my moms side we thankfully abandoned it. Instead we do secret Santa adults and children with a $20 limit (although 15 is kind of the unofficial minimum) and every puts their preferred gifts in an email chain so that you don't have to bother guessing if they'll like your gift. Although I think about 80% of the gifts end up being a visa gift card, candles, or nice chocolate. But I like this system since it keeps the spirit and pretense of the holiday and leaves out basically all the hassle so we can all come together and eat way to much food before going home with a week's worth of leftovers because clearly 10 different pies is the right number for 25 people (that's just the pies the total deserts have outnumbered the people before)

I'm not even going to dignify the ignorance of these two comments with an explanation of what socialism actually is, because I doubt you two understand what socialism really is. Well, I *know* one of you doesn't, but I suspect the other does as well. I will give you a hint, however: it's the reason the government is allowed to control certain things, such as civil services, the military, and the like.

The Venezuelan inflation crisis was pretty interesting as it caused many people to turn to, of all things, MMORPGs to survive. I'm sure it hit other games, but the main one I'm aware of was Oldschool Runescape. They could farm up a bunch of in-game currency and sell it online for much more stable currencies (namely USD).

Hey, I still get and enjoy birthday cards, even without money. It's a sign of personal love that I appreciate. We always hand sign with a handwritten message, though most cards are gotten from Dollar Tree these days. That's actually a good company to look at - they took over the dollar store business from competitors up and down the eastern US coast here.

If someone cares enough I say write a letter, even a short one. I see that as much better than buying some random card that will either get immediately thrown out, or just sit around- either 'displayed' or in a drawer or the like until it's thrown out or 'retired' to a box or somewhere.

There was a Chilean coin back in the 70s or 80s that was the exact same size and had the same type of ridges as the US quarter dollar. I used to use them on the laundry machine at the apartment I land lorded because it was easier than unlocking the machine and hitting the bypass switch. I'd just collect them for reuse when I went to collect the money out of the machine. Of course, by the time I lived in Chile in the early 90s, they'd switched over to some tiny coin that had almost no weight...not sure if it was made out of Aluminum, Zinc, or what but those things were so tiny I wondered by they didn't just abandon it and just round to the nearest 5 peso.

@@seanc6128 Nope, dogs definitely have empathy for other animals. Particularly other dogs or humans in their social group. They can feel "guilt" for an action which is "bad", like hurting another dog, even if they haven't been trained to do so. "Right" and "wrong" isn't entirely a social structure, at its base its a function of Empathy, and all higher mammals from us to Elephants have empathy.
