@@technophant but she wasn’t totally honest with the investigators. When they called her to say it was a scam, they asked her if she had sent any money or personal information, and she said no. They asked her again in the second call too; again, she said no. I mean, I get it. She was probably embarrassed at that point and in shock over it all, but if she had told them that she had given her banking information or downloaded that app, I guarantee that they would’ve advised her better so she could have protected herself.

I almost got sucked down this very scam one time when in a tough financial spot. I challenged them when they tried to get my card no. (there were no remote access apps for phones at the time). Scammer lost his temper quick and gave the scam away. I definitely got lucky because i desperate enough to probably have fallen for it if the scammer had had more finesse.

I had one call me yesterday morning saying he was from the IRS saying if I didn’t pay the outstanding amount I owe them, I would be arrested without further notice. He didn’t even know he was calling a potential victim in the UK and our tax is collected by HMRC.

I used to work for TransUnion and would always hear stories from customers on how they got scammed and how it fucked up their credit scores. I felt so bad for all of them but now I'm glad that you guys are doing this to keep everyone safe one call at a time

i believe victim #2 was trying to explain that he'd already fallen for it, and how before then he'd heard of people being scammed out of everything he thought that would never be him, but sure enough he got scammed. and he was switching banks because of it... and then he confirmed with our hero the next steps to take and thanked them for letting him know. rough translation

Interesting tactics. They trick the victim into thinking that they receive money in their account and that it's somehow "boosting" their credit score so they can get a loan. Then they are asked to send the money back (which they never actually received in the first place) leaving them with less.
