@@stevenakkersdijk I ride RPM kites and I find I have to send the kite very aggressively in order to get lift. Most of the time it turns into a jump.

Thanks a lot for your message Jens! I'll create a new video where I talk about the line lenghts, and will also try to incorporate the smaller differences between these line lengths. Personally I really enjoy the 22m lines and think that anywhere between 22 and 24 meter lines are the best for most riders.

Hands down, the best instructions on youtube! Your way of demonstrating is the only one I really can understand, reason and apply. I ride XR and gained lots of information. By the way I have purchased Core Sensor 3 Pro Compact based on your advice and reasoning. Will use it with 8m2 and 11m2. I am practicing hooked tricks so I realized i need the kite stable rather than easy and fast turning. I can use it with 45cm or 41,5 cm. I couldn't dare to go for Sensor 3 Wake bar :)

@@stevenakkersdijk Yep, have to put in practice. I have another question for you if I can. Is there any difference between sizes ? Let me explain: I have core xr 9,12 and 15. I thinking about 7 but I have a dilemma to sell all of them and only buy size 8, 10, 13. The reason is I don't want to have too many kites(travel etc.) and another reason is , ones you said that 10 size is working better for you? what did you mean ? Many Thanks

03:19: Perfect. This is exactly the information I have not been able to find anywhere else. It's either confusing, contradictory or simply doesn't work for me. I'd figured that fully powered gives me the best boost- I didn't realise that releasing under these conditions is so important. You are an absolute legend my friend- much respect from the UK.

The adjusting based on backstall is a great tip especially for rented kites where the bar doesn't always perfectly match the kite. I had a rented ozone bar & kite once where the kite stalled at 3/4 of bar pull.

Oh yes, I can imagine that the maintenance and trimming on those rentals isn't always the best. I used to have it a lot with school gear from Cabrinha, those lines are quite sensetive to stretch and shrink.

I would need to test it out first on the XR. I haven't really played with it that much. (on the XR) The GTS I would put on the freestyle mode. Best feedback. And my first reaction would put it on the freestyle or middle knot with the XR.

Good stuff! I think you should also talk about how line length affects the trimming switspot. Riding my XR 12 on 22s the other day I had to depower like 5-10 cm more than on 24s. Same thing trying the 8 gts on 20s in Cape Town

That's interesting to hear. Did you use different bars or the same one and just added extensions. In my experience the lines don't have a lot of effect on the trimming sweet spot.

Thank you so much! Brilliant video! I ride XR4's. Recently I played around with the settings to find out the differences that I could pick up on. My main discipline is big air (even though it's not very big...). I flew a 12m XR4 this weekend. Day 1 I had: •highest knot on steering line • closest wingtip loop to tail edge (wave setting) • knot closet to centre of kite on leading edge (wave setting) Day 2 I had the same but changed the leading edge knot connection to the knot closest to the wingtip (freestyle setting). Conclusion: Going into these settings I honestly thought the wave setting on the leading edge would make my kite faster and therefore produce greater lift. The wind conditions weren't identical but I definitely did notice that having the knot closest to wingtip (freestyle setting) did give my kite much more stability and it almost seemed to turn and "scoop" the wind. The wave setting knot I found the kite turned faster but in a motion that was like a pivot on itself. This I feel was producing power in the kite but then also dumping that power to finish its turn quicker. The scoop action from the freestyle setting felt like it kept the wind in the sail of the kite for longer therefore creating more lift. The wave setting felt like it would twitch a little and then lose that upward lift. This is all just my experience with a 12m XR4. It was different days and wind conditions so I could be very wrong. But it definitely seems as though Steven's advice applies to the XR range too. Oh and the top knot on steering line does make the kite back stall a bit. But it kind of felt ok to boost up with bar all the way in and then let it out slightly to grab that wind whilst airborne. Hope this helps anyone else wanting to experiment. Would love to hear anyone else's feedback on their XR settings for big air too!

WOW Steven great explanation on kite adjustments!!fortunatelly i understand english but there are many that speak other languages like spanish and portuguese.would be really helpful if you can get someone to put subtitles in different languages!. would really make core kites fly higher!!!

P.S. - man I am a core rider for almost 4 years and always on a hunt for a core hat. When do you think Core will start selling merchandise? :( kinda disappointed that only the official riders are able to have t-shirts and hats.

Thanks for the kind words Tuncher, I'll try and keep the content flowing next year. I know a lot of people that would love to have a CORE cap or shirt, unfortunately CORE has a very strict policy on who gets these products and as you mentioned it's super restricted. I also hope this changes in the next years.

Thank you for the explanations on all the adjustment points! I've been wondering how exactly the bridle attachment points affect the performance of the kite. I had not thought about making the kite more C shaped for my big airs. Can't wait to try it. I had to adjust the throw on my bar slightly so I can reach it and wonder how this is affecting my kite. Any thoughts on that? I took it in a couple inches. Any more than that and it really negatively affected the kite. But I cannot reach the bar in crashes, so I made a compromise. Ideally for me, I would like a bar with a 12 inch throw. Not sure how that can be engineered but look forward to the possibility one day.

Hey Rhonda When you make the throw of the bar shorter or longer youll need to adjust for the line lenght difference you generated. In the end you need to make aure that all line have an equal lenght when you bar is completely powered up with the bar down. You can do this by attaching the ends of the lines to a solid object and adjust the line lenght under the floaters

maybe i missed it, but the attachment point on the frame of the kite affects the total range of power between fully bar out and fully bar in. for example, if your rear lines are attached closest to the rear tip, and your lead lines are attached closest to the front of the kite along the leading edge, your bar will overall be less responsive, in other words, pushing or pulling the bar will have less effect. In the opposite kite, if your rear lines are attached furthest from the rear tip, and your leading lines are attached furthest from the front edge, pulling the bar in, will give more power, and pushing the bar out will give more depower. this tip can be useful for when deciding to trim for gusty or steady days.

As always and said many times, great videos. Please keep the content coming. We all dig it obviously. My question is related to bar pressure - I hear this mentioned a lot but I don’t understand what the value or detriment of more or less bar pressure really is. I live in a pretty light wind area and so I’m foiling a lot more than anything else. Would I benefit from lower bar pressure for foiling? Or does less bar pressure result in a feeling of a more jittery kite because you inevitably end up moving it around more with less pressure required to change the direction of the kite? Please expand on that if you don’t mind. Thanks in advance 🤙🏽

Glad to hear you're enjoying the content! Bar pressure is purely a personal preference. In my opinion you can get used to heavy and light bar pressure, I don't really switch it around as I'm happy with the kite in factory settings. But let's say you're a person with less strenght in the arms, or you suffer from elbow injuries, you'll probably prefer to ride in the lighter bar setting. More bar pressure usually translates to more feeling of what the kite is doing, but it does require more force, especially when you're steering it a lot.

Hi Steven, nice leasson as always. Just a question, how do you measure the limit backstall to trim (for big Air)… when you take off, do you sheet out the bar while its going up or just at the moment the kite stop pull and starting backstall. Tks mate

Hey Giuliano, I measure it by feeling, but I would say it's around the apex of the jump, usually just a little before. But it's best to go out there and try different things, at one point you'll just have to trust your feeling. You should be able to feel it when you "choke/backstall" the kite to much.

Thanks man! I have a Rode smartlav under my shirt. Previously I would use it with a long wire (also in this video) which works perfect. Recently got the wireless go, so curious to see how that will go.

Hey Nils, To be honest with you the XR is the only kite where I hardly played around with it. But I can imagine that it mainly has a big impact on the bar pressure due to the swept back wingtips. Next to that it will also change the turning a little bit as mentioned with the other kites.

Happy you like it. For kiteloops I would always recommend to keep your kite powered up, just make sure it doesn't backstall 😉

seen it several times now, still so helpful!! in 2 weeks we are travelling to Greece, I will try to change the CIT System. Question: we use XR5 in 6, 8, 10 and 12, and the 15 gts5. from which size down would you recommend to smaller the core bar? we have the core sensor 3+. only 6 and 8 or 10 as well? thank you so much steven !!

Hey Daniel Sorry for the late reply. How is Greece? I use the small Wakestyle bar on all my kites including the 12, 15 and 17. But if you have both bars you could draw the line around the 12. I think the 12 flies really nice on both bars, and it just comes down to personal preference. The 15 will probably fly better on the bigger (normal) bar.

nice vid! Even on the first node (from the Tip counted), my Kite doesn't show any tendency to fly backward. I checked my lines, they still have exactly the same length. Would you recommend to add a node ?

What kite is it? Under most circumstances my kite also doesn't backstall on the top knot. I do know it's on the edge though by the way that the kite is flying. You could add a knot above the one you have now, but still connect the line to the knot where it's currently connected. (making a knot in the line makes it shorter) Let me know if you have any questions.

Excellent video. Could you consider explaining how to use this info to learn new tricks. Is using a small bar on a bigger kite in lighter winds best to avoid mis-steering? Also, how does line length fit in ti this equation. Do you always run shorter lines on your smaller bar?

Sorry for the late reply, quite bad from me.... The mic is under my shirt. I've been using the Rode Smartlav+ for most of my videos. Super simple wired mic. On my newer videos I started using the Rode Wireless go.

Great stuff, Steven, thank you... I do have a question.. Sometimes, I ride a slingshot rally 2017, 7m2 of a friend.... when steering forcefully and powered, the kite collapses, as if its blatters are loosing air pressure.. the only way to correct is shifting out the bar completely... it happens with aggressive steering, and once it happens, all force vanishes instantaneously... it is freaking me out.. what can I change to stop this from happening?

You could try to pump the kite up a bit harder, in that case it should keep the shape a lot better. Not sure what Slingshot recommends, but I would pump it to at least 8psi (depending on the wind conditions, I pump it harder for stronger winds) Hope that helps, Cheers Steven

@@hendrikdelange6924 Hi Hendrik, I had a possibly similar experience with my pivot 10m: kite collapsing in full flight, not so comfortable. I found out it was because of the line extensions. The steering lines were to long if I used either the second or third not. Only when I used the first not the kite was powered sufficiently. By the sound of it, you might have a similar problem?

Hello Steven, Really appreciate your videos!!!! Was hoping you could answer this question when tuning the Core Sensor 2S and Sensor 3 Kite bar should the bar go all the way to the stopper showing that all lines are equal when the bar is pulled in? I have 3 CORE Bars and they all are about 1 1/2" inches off of the stopper when the bar is pulled in. I've asked other CORE riders but got mixed answers saying the bar should be tuned to the stopper and others saying to leave it, it is perfect. Hoping to get your advice, thank you!!

Hey Matthew, Very sorry for the late reply. Hope I can still help you out with this answer. When the bar is fully powered up (bar all the way down to stopper and trim adjusted at full power), all lines should be equal length. In time your steering lines shrink due to sand and salt coming in to them. As the power lines are often under tension they tend to shrink less. Meaning they're often a bit longer. You can fix this by adjusting the knots under your floaters (making the steering lines longer)

@@C-FPV indeed👍👍👍 I made good progressions in this year... but on a certain point the progression gets a lot slower.... I shouldnt complain with about 140 sessions a year, I still want to rush with the progression forward just like after you nailed your first trick🤪🤪🤪

Hey Steve. Can you open discussion about Wave setting in Core kite. theoretical in Wave setting kite more open and Wave setting must by better for big air and must have more and hangtime. Same must by in GTS6 setting. Do you tested GTS6 in wave setting: how hangtime ? About pressure setting: They connect not in the same line if you look from side. Last (soft) connect is lowerest connect, that mean that bar is 1 cm lower.

I've ridden the kites in wave setting. It does open up a little, but I didn't notice a lot that this increases the hangtime. For me the feel of the kite is just so much more direct in the Freestyle setting, making it my favorite setting for big air. As there is an angle on the bridles, the knot height doesn't make a difference (to my feeling)

I have XR 13.5m; 11m, 8m - and core rep told me to keep it in factory mode for best perfomance (I am only interested in big air). Is it true in Your opinion for XR6?

Hey Ireneusz THe XR6 is a kite where I haven't been playing around with the settings a lot. I think you will be perfect in the factory settings. This is the mode which the designers like the most. And then you can change the characteristics slightly by adjusting the knot. Cheers Steven

The XR is probably the one kite where I haven't played with the CIT points. But the basics are the same, closer to the center of the kite will deliver more depower and power on demand, but a less stable frame. The knot close to the tip will give you a solid frame, but more constant power. Personally I would ride it on either the middle knot or the one close to the tip.

I have to say that I haven't really tried yet. But usually kites become slower with a low v bar and turn more from the tips. Not something I would enjoy on the XR.

Awesome, I heard good stories about that place. At the moment the van is back on the east coast of Canada and will probably stay here for another 2 years I think. After that we'll probably drive it back to the west coast.

Hi Steven!one question, my core sensor 3 bar, the centerl lines are four cm longer than steer lines, how can i shorter the center line?

You can adjust steering lines under the floaters of the bar. You can also connect your steering lines to a solid object and stretch them back to the right lenght.

On the GTS attaching closer to the wing tip seems to choke the kite off more especially toward the low end of the wind range. Really killing it's ability to fly causing more backstalls... On Nexus the freestyle setting seems to make it sit deeper into the wind window dragging you downwind where wave setting let it sit closer to the wind window and making it easier to jump higher. Am I crazy?

Hey Youn, How long have you been riding your GTS? It is possible that the choking effects gets worse over time and use of the kite. Personally I can ride it full power, but on the jumps I will have to sheet out a little bit on my jumps, but this is minimal. When freestyling I will depower a littbe bit though. The CIT points on the Nexus should not have a big impact on the kites position in the wind window, at least it's not something I've noticed that much. Cheers Steven

I notice the choking on my GTS5 13.5M the most. My 8,9,10,11 not as much. Maybe I should put 8+psi into it so the wing tips don't collapse as much? Debating if I should replace my GTS4 9M with Nexus 2 9M instead of GTS6 this year. I ride strapless and twintip freestyle mostly.

Unless you have a new bar, you should start with checking the line lengths of your bar. Make sure they are all the same length when center lines set to their longest position. (You can find video tutorials for this). You can trim your kite on the beach, but show me a single beach on earth where wind is constant for at least 5 minutes and even for the entire spot. I'm surprised that for the Core kite the position of the steering lines does not affect the steering speed. It definitely does for my Best Roca.

Hey Andras Thanks for your detailed message. Checking your line length on the bar is definitely an important one and I would always recommend doing this on regular basis. But when you use the technique shown at 01:40 it doesn't really matter if your lines are of different length. Of course there is no perfect scenario where the wind doesn't go up and down a little bit. But when you have onshore conditions you should still be able to perform this kite trim quite well. In my opinion there is no difference in the steering speed when adjusting the steering line adjustment on the kite. You change the location where you pull down the tip, but the tip doesn't change shape because of that. You do change the lever and the amount of force needed to steer the kite which makes it feel lighter or heavier to steer the kite. This often gets translated to fast and slow steering, but there's where I disagree. (At least on the CORE kites)

My point with the line length is that if your lines are too far off (e.g. the steering lines are much shorter), then you may not even find the sweet point, as it is out of range, or even if you find it, you have to trim the center lines a lot. Which isn't good, since when a strong gust hits it is good to have a safety option of trimming the center lines even further. But this isn't possible if they are already trimmed. Or in other words there is a range where you can adjust your kite using the knots at the kite or the adjuster on the center line. Now if your lines are not the same length then you lose a part of that range I had this experience: my steering lines got ~5-10cm shorter than the center lines but I didn't notice. I was out in very gusty winds and couldn't de-power my kite properly during a strong gust. I adjusted the line lengths so now I again have the full trim-range of the kite available. I keep watching your videos, only wish we had a bit more wind to practice ...

Totally agree with you, a lot of people don't realize when their lines have different lengths and therefor a smaller adjustment range. Hope you get some wind soon!

What about the apparent wind you make when moving in the water ?? The kite won't see the same wind as standing in the beach in your video I guess. Anyways, if it works, it works.

Hey Fabian. Of course the apparent wind has a massive effect on the kite, but this is an entirely different talk. The kite trim is something you can do very well on the beach and this will have the right effect on the water. Would actually be different to do an entire talk about apparent wind

Thanks for the video. Just my feedback, I'd suggest no sunglasses as it feels more personal while presenting. Also, would suggest more casual beach wear something which looks more like the stuff you'd wear when going kitesurfing.

Thanks for your feedback. This is pretty much the only video where I was wearing sunglasses. I do know what a difference it makes, but with the sand I just had to this time 😅 And the clothing is exactly my style and what I wear when kiting 😉

This is so backwards and has me so confused on the bridal setting at 8:00. My slingshot literally says wave on the outside line which will pull it in to more of a C shape and it says freestyle on the connection closer to the middle of the kite which would open it up. 🥴🤪 Its backwards from what he's saying..🤔

My guess is that you confused Freeride and Freestyle. But I'm not familiar with the Slingshot kites and their setup. This video is based on CORE kites.

Great video, but if you trim your bar and then move your kite lines up a few knots, then it's going to defeat the purpose of trimming your bar.

That will all depend on how your kite lines are set up and if your lines have decreased in length over time. As I mentioned in the video I like to have a kite that is set close to backstall for big air. When I go out in strong winds this point shifts a little bit, so I can power the kite up more before it backstalls. This means I'll ride my bar full power with the knot all the way up (most power on the kite) for that session.
