I've been meaning to do this video for a while now and just haven't gotten around to it. But with my recent re focusing on myself and working towards a better me. I felt it was the perfect time to do this video.
At times it seems so crazy to me that it's been almost two years since I broke my foot, and at other times it feels like it was yesterday. But I'm grateful for every day.

I had a trimalleolar fracture on 9/26 while only 5 days into my 17 day trip to Scotland. I was rescued by helicopter, brought to a local hospital where it was reset and casted. Two days later, I flew home to the US with my leg in my husband's lap, and two days after that, I had surgery involving a plate and a whole bunch of screws. Wow, has this has turned my world upside down! I've been doing ok mentally for the most part but for a bunch of silly reasons yesterday, I hit a low. I'm ok now but I appreciate your words that are realistic while also inspiring. I may still have a long road ahead but this too shall pass.

Thank you SO MUCH! I am about 6 weeks out of surgery for a trimalleolar fracture. I also had 2 dislocations of both ankle bones and a foot brake as well. I had fallen about 15-20 feet out of a tree in bare feet. They put in 3 plates and 21 screws. I just got out of my cast today and put in the boot. Still non weight-bearing. But I am scared to death to put any weight on it when the times comes. You are so right about fear. I baby my leg now like I want to put a bubble around it. I was so encouraged by this video it made me cry. In 2 weeks I have to go in for another x-ray to see if the fracture across my foot can take any weight without moving. If not, I will need another surgery. I will continue to believe I can do it. Thank you so much for putting your journey out there for everyone to relate to. It truly helps!

I broke my right ankle in 2 places 3 1/2 months ago and am held together with plates and screws. When I went to the surgeon for my last post-op appointment, he told me something I needed to hear - - - "You've healed really well, but healing is not recovery." Although I'm physically healed , I'm far from recovered and I know now that it may take years before I feel back to normal. And the truth is, I'm 69 years old and this was my first broken bone. So now I'm dealing with normal ageing as well as recovery, so I may not be able to get back to my pre-break ability. Sigh. Thanks for this video!

I understand completely what you are going thru. Remember to remain positive and listen to your body as you continue to recover. It does take time and I find I'm still strengthen and building my own ankle every day. For me the biggest thing I've noticed is if I don't use it regularly in a certain way like climbing a ladder or walking in sand that it is more difficult to do. But walking, standing, and other daily activities I do regularly are much easier. Best advice I can give is work on remaining positive and the rest will fall in place. You got this!!!!

Thank you so much for this. It’s been 13 weeks for me so far. Surgery (day of break) with two plates and lots of screws, cast, boot, PT then second surgery (planned) to get rid of some scar tissue two weeks ago that I somehow thought would be way easier but back to no weight bearing, tons of pain. Now finally released to weight bearing with or without boot and it’s so hard and painful. My foot feels numb and tingly, still bruised snd painful to touch. Heading back to PT and hoping for my foot to feel more and more normal but you are not joking about the emotional ups and downs. I just want to be able to do normal stuff like stand to cook, drive...I know I will get there but I thought it would be faster. Anyway, I so appreciate your honesty about your experience. Thank you

I watched a lot of videos about broken ankles. Nobody broke as badly as I did. You are close. I broke three bones and dislocated 1 bone from Greek vacation. Flew back to USA immediately without completing my vacation. Now I am 10 months after surgery, Having 13 screws and 3 plates. I am in my early 60s. Not young. Comparing your recovery to mine, I go back to my normal shoes around 6 months. I have no pain, but stiff ankle. I believe my doctor wants to see me at least for a year.He told me I need more time to recover than anyone else. I believe my ankle will never go back to 100% normal. I can walk now, but am scared to walk on uneven surfaces. Thank you very much for your videos. It gives me some hope.
@LeBoof
@LeBoof Жыл бұрын
I understand completely you're fears of uneven grou completelynd. I was completely the same for the first probably year to year and a half. It was extremely scary when I first started trying, but and even n, w sometimes. But it does become easier with time. I still have issues walking on slopes or uneven ground but every time i t, y I get stronger at doing it. As an older person myself I understand the recovery is slower for us. But rememb, r anything is possible with time, healing, and a positive mind. I may never walk like I used to but I'm ok with that and understand the hardware alone limits my movements to some degree. But I still believe I can do the things I love, even if I'm a little bit slower. :) So hang in there, my friend, I believe in you.

@@LeBoof Thank you for your support and encouragement. One more question. Will the tight ring around the ankle ever go away? I mean that feeling, not the actual ring .
@LeBoof
@LeBoof Жыл бұрын
@dongbush7278 Obviously, everyone has different reactions. I no longer experience anything like that. But I do still experience a lot of stiffness when I haven't moved it in a while. I find it takes me a few minutes to, as I say to wake up my foot. If I go to the movies where I'm stationary for a period of time it gets very stiff. Soni have to rotate and flex it around to get it moving again. I know everyone's healing process and break is different. But I do believe a positive mind goes a long way. Especially since in the beginning I was doom and gloom and I feel it hindered my healing at first. Once I changed my mind set I felt I did so much better. Therapy was great for me to build confidence and strength.

@@LeBoof Thanks a million. I believe this ring will go away eventually. Be patient. I have the same problem. If I don't move around for a while, it gets stiff. It takes a few steps to get back. I am trying to be positive and not gloomy and doomed. Live the best for the rest of my life. Thanks again. Have a great summer.

Thank you for sharing your journey and recovery process with your Trimalleolar fracture. I have the same injury and I’m about 11 weeks post op, just finished week 4 of PT. I feel and see improvement on a weekly basis however, I understand that I have a long way to go before becoming close to 100%. Watching your video updates gives me even more motivation to push myself as hard as I can with my PT and recovery process. Are any parts of your foot still numb? The bottom of my foot at the heal still has mild numbness 11 weeks post op but i do feel that it’s slowly improving. I wish you well!!!
@LeBoof

First let me start off by saying that I'm very glad the videos are motivational and helpful. To answer your question about numbness I experienced numbness in my toes for several months. But with time it did gradually go away until I had none. It did take some time for that to happen. Best of luck with your recovery. I'm sure you will do very well.

That sounds like such a brutal injury, glad you are continuously healing and able to do more and more! Totally know what you mean about being afraid at first to really use it. I have never broken anything more than my finger, and I know a sprain doesnt compare to a break, but I also had that fear initially this year after I sprained my ankle.

Great follow up! You broke your foot, dislocated stuff and all from bed? You are HARD CORE lol. Sorry you had to go through all this. I massively bruised my ankle when being stupid when hiking. I was lucky it wasn't broken and had to hike 3 miles back to camp on it and it's never been the same (23 years later). With your injury... you're doing amazingly well in recovery in my opinion. Love your speedy recovery :-)

Sometimes you might feel you haven’t come very far or it’s taking a long time, when you have a bad day because you’re walking slow or whatever, remember back to when you were in a cast and didn’t trust your partner when they were slowly lowering your leg from the sofa to the floor or you couldn’t imagine getting in and out the shower, these are the things that make me realise I have come a long way.

Thanks for sharing your inspiring story. I'm having a hard time knowing which compression level for the socks. Would you know which level were the ones you used? I think these are the choices: 15-20 mmHg (over the counter), 20-30 mmHg (medical class 1), 30-40 mmHg (medical class 2) and 40-50 mmHg (medical class 3). Many thanks!

Do you remember where your range of motion was (% wise) and how you were walking at 6 months post surgery? 🤔 Do you plan on getting your hardware removed? Good video btw. ☺️👍
@LeBoof
@LeBoof 3 жыл бұрын
My percentage was lower than I think most would have been. Because I really struggled in the beginning and I held myself back in my opinion. Walking at the 6 month range was I believe with a cane to help stabilize me and maybe some knee scooter use. As for removing my hardware? I'd say no probably not unless I had to. There is nothing I can't do that I did before, I'm just a bit slower at times. Thanks for watching and I hope I answered all your questions.
