The sailing of that trimaran is one of the most beautiful things that I have ever seen. The lovely piano music beginning at 0:23 didn't hurt either. When I watch that boat being sailed, I think, "That's freedom." Sam, are you aware of the kite option for the Silent 60 motor-yacht? It's a 60' solar powered yacht (true solar power with unlimited range of 6-7 knots cruising speed) that has a kite option to increase speed. That kite has a figure-eight, some sort of, design, that makes it capable of automated, hands-off, operation. It's new and we have yet to see it in operation, so far as I know, but Silent Yachts has a track record on delivering the unbelievable. Well, I was reminded of that Silent Yachts kite when I saw how the kite on the trimaran worked. That swiveling boom seemed to make the sailing much more stable and approachable (as far as kiteboatong goes).

Kite sailing is the future. This stuff is so cool. The Syroco project is trying to go 150 km/h with a kite. Even container ships are getting in on the action, although not for speed but to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Such a sick project! Imagine putting pedals in the front to steer...

Dont need no pedals

@@ressanopapanoa it would allow the kite controller to do the rudder. As it is the kiter and the helm have to be on the same wavelength but only the tiller can see the kite controller and not the other way around.

How fast were you going in the kiteboat? Windspeed and kite size? Did those guys build it from scratch? Are they willing to sell plans? It looks like a nice stable platform.

What is the arm for? Shifting the point of pull leeward/downwind?
@Panoramix08744 жыл бұрын
Align the forces of the daggerboard to the pull of kite line so that the boat doesn't heel.

Why is the kite mounted on a lever? Can't you get rid of that lever and loose its forces on the boat? Seems hindering to get your boat levered all the time.
@weatheranddarkness3 жыл бұрын
it's actually possibly too short. Ideally the kite would pull through the cg of the boat and the point of lateral resistance. If the kite pulled from the centre it would be pulling above the cg and still be creating a heeling moment.

Hi Sam, It is clear from this footage that you are in fact breaking the law at the secret location in Langstone Harbour between The Kench and the RSPB site at Binness Island. Kitesurfing and the use of kites to propel vessels is a prohibited activity in Langstone Harbour (Byelaw 51). Further, the speed limit is 10 knots over the ground and 5 knots over the ground in the Marina Approach Channel (Byelaw 6). Please be aware that as a statutory harbour authority we have the power to carry out enforcement activity against anyone who is breaking the law. The reason kite surfing is prohibited is that Langstone Harbour is an internationally important place for seabirds (in particular this applies to the area around Binness island). The harbour has numerous environmental designations because of this bird life, including being a Special Protection Area under the Wild Birds Directive (2009/147/EC). Seabirds are unable to tell the difference between kites and large avian predators such as hawks. As such, kitesurfing causes large amounts of disturbance to seabirds which can ultimately lead to mortality and a drastic decline in seabird population numbers. Please do not kitesurf in Langstone Harbour in the future, and instead utilise the designated kitesurfing area on the southern side of Hayling Island. Do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss this matter further using admin@langstoneharbour.org.uk Langstone Harbour Master
