found answer to mirror tool for making roofline tiles. shift + RMB brings up mirror button on shortcuts menu. then it brings up a box that gives more options such as cut geometry, axis position, offset etc. i clicked Offset and changed it from 0 to -1. it created a mirror of the roofline but didnt snap on like a V. it was further apart. however when i moved it close to the other side it automatically snapped into position :) yay! wish it worked like this video shows automatically making an inverted V but whatever it works and i can finish this model. Hope it helps anyone else who gets stuck on that part.

Mesh > Smooth Tool Settings (the box to the right of "Smooth"). Under "Exponential Controls" click the "OpenSubdiv Catmull-Clark" option, under "OpenSubdiv Catmull-Clark > Vertex Boundary" click "Sharp edges", under "OpenSubdiv Catmull-Clark > UV Boundary Smooth" click "None", and then click "Apply". A couple other combinations in the smooth options works as well but I'm not sure which one is correct.

I absolutely hate how maya makes you extrude things. You have to find the extrude button, then press the repeat hot key to extrude again. And if you need to rotate, you press the rotate hot key which will then replace your extrude action into rotate when you use the repeat hot key. You need to look for the extrude button to make it work again. Honestly don't know why there even is a repeat hot key. I prefer blenders way of modeling stuff as it's super fast, but learning maya is a requirement if I want to work for any animation industry.

For texturing we need a surface to paint. You can't paint on the models directly. So can assume the UVs as the canvas to paint. If it is crumpled you can't paint on it properly. So we do UV unwrapping.
