First I’m so happy you did the live version from the David Letterman show it’s brilliant it’s better than the recording. When Linda met EmmyLou for the first time In the early 70s. Linda was the opening act for Neil Young she was just about to hit it big and Emmy Lou was working with Graham Parsons amazing mazing man who died too young. Linda went to see Gram Parsons after her show at a honky Tonk . Being the only two girl singers in a very male space They got to talking about who they are famous girl saying it was and they both said Dolly Parton. I believe they would need in the next year and the three of them realize that they were musical sisters because their voices blended so well. If it was up to EmmyLou and Linda they would allow Dolly to sing all the leads. All of them take turns on the lead on both albums and the unreleased material they came out later on.

Emmylou is amazing--you should listen to some of her stuff because she's a legend for a reason. Her earliest records do an interesting fusion of country and soft rock but then on her Roses in the Snow album, she turns to real Appalachian traditional music and really ushered in the neotraditional movement in country. I don't necessarily love country music, but I adore Emmylou.

Nice! You've hit the trifecta with this jewel. This performance was from Late Night with David Letterman, March 24, 1999. The instrument that sounds like angels, church organ, and calliope smashed together -- you can see it in the shot when Dolly sings the line about the silver spaceships -- is called a glass harmonium. Benjamin Franklin invented the mechanical version in 1761. Emmylou Harris is a country-folk singer who debuted in the 70's. She worked with Gram Parsons among others. The version of "Love Hurts" the two of them released in in 1973 -- four months after Parsons passed away -- is really really good. A few other songs from her to check out are "Sweet Old World", "Boulder To Birmingham", and "If I Could Only Win Your Love".

The Trio really shown bright on this Neil Young classic. They put their own brand on it and turn it from a medium up tempo song into a gorgeous and atmospheric track that really haunts the heart. They used an instrument that really contributed to the atmosphere of the song that was invented by Benjamin Franklin ( An American Founding Father, Ambassador to France, and notable inventor and good amateur scientist. The instrument is called a glass harmonica. Stunning sound. This song is from their 2nd Trio album. The first was released around 1986 and it has some excellent stuff on it. Both albums are a must own and will provide many hours of "diamonds in your ears." You said you love gospel music, like The Statler Brothers ( those are my guys! LoveD them for 52 years! ). There is country, folk, gospel, bluegrass, and some popular tracks on these albums. They show their versatility all while singing like angels. I am so glad we have two albums of their collaborations, but wouldn't have minded a few more albums ( even a Christmas album). Oh well, the two albums they offered us are treasures.

Linda did say that she preferred to sing backup or harmonize as opposed to sing lead. Fell in love with Linda back in her 'You're No Good' days, but mostly introduced to Dolly (with the exception of 9 to 5) thru this union. Emmylou I had discovered along the way. We grew up listening to these 3 ladies with their solo careers. But then we got a beautiful 🎁 when they sang together. Emmylou did a cover of "Mr. Sandman" in the 70's. Dolly & Linda are singing backup. The l think the 1st hit song off of the Trio album was "To know him is to love him". The other 2 are "Telling me lies" & "Those memories of you". Doesn't matter which song you pick from Trio1 or 2. They are all great! Emmylou has had duet hits with Vern Goslin, Buck Owens, Don Williams, John Denver, Roy Orbison & Earl Thomas Conley. Those are the ones l know that were played on Country radio. As mentioned below other great harmony albums are, Honky Tonk Angels with Dolly, Loretta Lynn & Tammy Wynette. K.D. Langs Shadowland singing with Brenda Lee, Kitty Wells & Loretta Lynn. Also for great harmonies The Gatlin Brothers, The Forester Sisters, The kindalls, The Statler Brothers, The Girls Next Door, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Carter Family, The McCarter Sisters to name just a few in Country Music.

Yes, yes, yes! Finally, the Trio. It doesn't get any better than this. (OK, Maybe the Beatles, but I'm only conceding based on songwriting.) These three are magic. Please, now do one with Linda singing lead: Telling Me Lies, which won Song of the Year at the CMA's and was nominated in the same category at the Grammy's. Then please do one with Emmylou in front. I'll let someone else pick since Emmylou tends to step back and let others take the lead. She has sung backup and/or harmony for Linda and Dolly and nearly anybody else you can name (Bob Dylan, Neil Young, etc.). She has countless albums of her own, and I own nearly all of them. There isn't a clunker in the bunch. Consider her "duet" with Linda on Linda's cover of the Hank Williams classic I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You). Man, they sound good together. Harri, you'll melt.

I believe there is a version of this song they sang on Dolly Parton's 1970s TV show. Then they kept all of Neil's lyrics. Originally the title track to 1970s After the Gold Rush, the original line was the prescient "Look at Mother Nature on the run in the 1970s." Check the song Evangeline by The Band featuring Emmylou Harris. Essentially a music video created by Martin Scorsese fir the concert documentary The Last Waltz as the concert didn't really touch on The Band's country side.

PS Neil Young wrote this song, and Emmylou has worked with Neil a lot. He sings for her; she sings for him. All of those years ago, Neil was writing about a dream in which children were being flown to a new planet to begin human life there. There can be no good reason. This song invariably makes me cry as scientist are now searching for a planet to save some remnants of the human race. None has been found. We either save this planet, or we disappear.

Not sure why they felt it necessary to change the lyrics. Perhaps 'felt like getting high', which was changed to 'like I would cry', is not acceptable on mainstream US TV. Trio is actually a German NDW (Neue Deutsche Welle i.e. New German Wave) Band; one of their most famous hits is "Da-DaDa". They give a totally different vibe than those ladies above. Thank you for reacting to Trio. One could put the two Trio albums on an endless loop and listen to them all day, they're that good. I hope you will dive deeper into the Emmylou Harris catalog. Willie Nelson famously said, "There are two kinds of men in this world, those who are in love with Emmylou Harris and those who have never met Emmylou Harris." Everybody wants to sing with her, and many of the best have. She even did a world tour & an album with Mark Knopfler. Here's the title song, should you choose to react to it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqjMio2Ki8l1nKc&start_radio=1 I would also suggest a number or two from her Old Grey Whistle Test concert in London, the Chuck Berry Cajun classic, C'est la Vie, You Never Can Tell, and Luxury Liner. You can't go wrong with Emmylou. You might even fall in love. More Linda might also be a good idea.
