Great video! I'm interested in de-hubbed airports. I remember when St. Louis still busy. Would love to see PIT before the remodel.

They are doing a full remodel of the airport, B is completely closed for remodeling and everyone is crammed into A and C, once the construction is finished they will move everyone back into B, demolish A (i think) and mothball C.

Delta's MD88 is one of my favorites. It's a really roomy and comfortable plane. I last flew in one a couple of months ago after getting off of a redeye 747 (Delta) and fell asleep after boarding and didn't wake up until we were descending. I can never sleep in planes and I have no trouble in this one and my back and knees don't hurt, either.

I forgot that Memphis was a Northwest hub for the longest time before the whole Delta thing happened. It is sad to see STL and what it has become. So many memories. Thanks for the video!

both of those cities!! memphis' lost from delta/northwest and st. louis' from american/twa
@dvferyance Жыл бұрын
I think St Louis should still be an American hub. Although American does have a lot of hubs as it maybe it could be like a mini one. Memphis was never really an airport that was hub worthy.

41:30 - The prevailing winds at ATL usually result in east to west airport operations, with departures from the two interior parallel runways (26L & 27R) in the westbound direction. Due to the configuration of the taxiways at ATL, most departures get assigned to runway 26L on the north side of the terminal complex, often forming a long queue of aircraft on taxiway E (Echo), slowly taxiing right alongside the Delta Airlines maintenance facility before takeoff. However, a few lucky departures will get assigned to runway 27R along the south side of the terminal complex, and will likely enjoy a short quick taxi before takeoff. In this video, airport operations are west to east. Departing traffic still uses the parallel interior runways, but in the eastbound direction: (runways 8R & 9L). In this case (again due to the configuration of the taxiways), most departing traffic is assigned to runway 9L via taxiway L (Lima), where a long taxi queue before takeoff can usually be expected. However, a few lucky departures are assigned to runway 8R, enjoying a short *quick* taxi before takeoff, as seen in the video. The parallel outer runways (8L-26R & 9R-27L) are primarily used for arrivals only, as is the newer southernmost parallel runway (10-28). This allows the efficiently sequenced approaching aircraft to land continuously with no disruption from departing traffic. After turning off the runway, arriving passenger airliners usually hold short (wait between the runways) in queues for a few minutes. When these arrival queues get full, departures are temporarily halted to allow the waiting arrival queues to clear as they taxi across the interior (departure) runway to reach the concourses.

Wow Memphis is practically abandoned now. I remember the early 2000s when it was a NWA hub. It was busy back then. I would usually get off a flight from DTW on B concourse, and then catch a Saab 340 to PFN.

It's amazing to see what KMEM has become. I used to fly there weekly around 2008/9. I saw the decline due to the Delta merger. It's pretty shocking to see an American plane at the B gates. I Spent many hours in the C terminal, and a few in A as well. Also, pricing was crazy. I had a direct flight from my airport to MEM. Coworker flew on the same plane to MEM, and transfered to Indy. His ticket was about $300, mine was near $1100.

I love the md88 its design is amazing the elevators are free floating meaning the trim tabs are what move the control surface and the sound is just dang amazing from the jt8d engines on the md 90 the engine pylons are movable this was a design addition when they test flew it and found out the elevator wasn't big enough when in a high nose stall so the rear of the engine pylons when full nose down is applied they move down to assist the elevator in recovering the stall

Memphis is my closest airport. Back when it was primarily Delta, prices were outrageous but now with all of the other airlines, it is fairly reasonable to fly out of. My last flight came in about an hour late and we sat for half an hour waiting for someone to move the walkway to the plane due to this place just shuts down after 11 PM. Fed Ex though makes this the busiest cargo airport in the U.S. All runways are shared between Fed Ex and passenger plane traffic.
@kimberlycotter97266 жыл бұрын
Fed-ex has its own private runway making Fed-ex have four while passenger planes traffic is only three.

No wonder why DL dehubbed MEM. It's only a 45 min flight from ATL, or basically 370 miles away, and the hub's routes were mainly flown by 50 seat RJs which were out of favor and being retired, and it was a high cost operation and of no financial return to Delta. So they had to make the best logical business decision. And from the beginning with the DL/NW Merger they were 0% committed to MEM, so basically they made NO PROMISES to the city to keep the hub intact.So now you have the result. Closed concourses, vacant gates, and the airport is looking more and more like STL/PIT/CVG.

I cannot feel sorry for pathetic cities like Memphis and St. Louis - destroyed through neglect and greed by their own right-wing state governments. I lived in St Louis for 6 years and watched every major corporation from Mallinckrodt to TWA sell out to the highest bidder in a wave of unprecedented greed. My thought was - let it die. They did this to themselves.
