Just checked my NRMA roadside and I realised that we're not covered for the caravan being towed. RACV much better coverage and yearly price. Have just cxled NRMA policy and started one with RACV. Great policy. Thanks for uploading the details of what they covered because otherwise I wouldn't necessarily have gone to check what our current roadside assist policy covers us for - or doesn't in our case.. Great vid.

Great Vid. I just went and checked my RACQ extra care. I've got the same car and recently blew the top hose for the intercooler which is a very common problem and replaced with metal pipes. I was reading, yesterday, that the coolant hose and housing (?) is another common issue that occurs around the 100k mark. I'm going to look for a stronger coolant hose or maybe get one fabricated. Its a scary proposition that it can blow and cook the engine so quickly. Anyway, looking forward to the Cairns vid

Cooling hoses splitting and blowing off on BT50 often means the EGR cooler is starting to fail, it over pressures the cooling system causing leaks and hoses to pop off. Get the EGR cooler pressure tested.

same hose split on my ranger lost all the water the temp gauge did not move as it reads last temp before water loss, and there is no low water level warning gauge from header tankThe engine was a total write offmy dealer had 6 vehicles with same issuenew engine fitted 1000 miles later top hose split this time in day light so saw steam from under hood able to stop instantly my glove box is now full of spare hoses

@@TripInAVan the 3.2 seem pretty good,but,its still towing a sht load of weight,i dont care they say it,ll tow 3.5t,popycock,,on a flat road,nice day..22 degrees..i know theres not a lot of choice these days.anything can break down on a trip.due to you,servicing,or manufacturer,cheaping on parts.i try allways to go bigger,than whats needed,less stress.i wouldnt buy a diesel under 4 lt.turbo,ed.all that tech on a 2.2/3lt,/3.2 makes the #s,but its still a small engine doing the work..you need to fit intercooler,if it hasnt one,& bigger rad,trans & p/s, coolers..all help..its hard with a family..good luck..from.ex qlder,in s.a..s.a sucks..

My brother had a Timing Belt go in the NT had been just fitted ( Madza Belt Split) and he had RACQ Top service, overnight Tennant Ck bus from Tennant Ck to the Alice plane to Cairns car to Cairns all covered, rebuilt motor paid for by Mazda Darwin. Love your coverage of the trip exceptional.

Lived and worked in top end for many years in automotive trade, replaced belts every 40k and coolant belts& hoses every 80k, never had a customer break down from cooling system failure, something to be said for preventative ma maintenance, its only expensive until you break down then you find out what expensive truly is.

Years ago I had a coolant level alarm that had a probe you drilled into the expansion tank it made a horrible noise if level dropped or you did some extreme down hill decent looking at what happened to you I might see if they are still out there great show

Hot tip in the Territory, Pop open your bonnet its still a law in the NT that you must stop for a broken down vehicle due to the long distances between places.

Great video, I have a bt50 to I replace the standard radiator for a aluminium one twice the size Mazda radiators can’t handle Australia conditions just way to small especially if you are towing,and a nothing thing is to invest in a aftermarket temperature gauge as oem gauges don’t move until it’s all to late, safe travels

We broke down at 3 Ways last year. Blown Turbo ...... just started our trip. RACQ Premium Roadside Assistance saved us. Spent a week in Tennant Creek. 3 weeks later lost the caravan off the hitch near Daley Waters. Roadside Assist again......ultimate lifesaver. Best $299 ever spent

Bad luck about the coolant hose, I have mentioned this on an earlier video but get an engine guard temp alarm which takes its temp from the cylinder head and sounds a very loud alarm when you preset over temp is reached, as you advised a blown coolant hose and coolant loss does not always indicate a problem because the coolant it reads off has escaped, plus the engine guard has a large digital display so you will know what temp normal is, with or without the van, very good on long hill climbs to back off the throttle to baby the motor, keep up the good work, good to hear the RACV, I have similar coverage with RACWA, I had worked for them for 23 years before retiring and saw similar good outcomes Regards Tony

That's some welcome advice Tony. Several years ago we did a motor under very similar circumstances to the one in this video and had to wear the cost of a brand new motor. We ended up trading in on a new Mazda bt50 and at around 12,00k had to replace another engine (this time under warranty) due to the oil pump not priming after a dealer service. I've become a little paranoid when towing now and I'll definitely be taking your advice. 👍

Steven Plahn , The other bit of insurance especially when Towing is that I have fitted a scan guage, It connects to the OBD plug and gives you a lot of additional engine & gearbox monitoring but the main component is that it can read & clear fault codes, I have a list of the codes & what they mean to hopefully fix the problem and carry on without the vehicle going into limp home mode rendering it useless with 2.5 tons of Caravan on the back, we are in Perth and have done the Nullarbor the last 8 years to my visit wife’s relos in QLD

Tough break. Look up Engine Guard. Genuine Aussie made sensor & alarm made up your way. $99 measures engine temp externally, so fluid loss does not cancel out the alarm warnings like the OEM temp gauge, which needs fluid to work. I bought 2 for both vehicles, because you learn the hard way that by the time the temp gauge shows a problem its all over. Not what you want in the middle of nowhere. Hope #Mazda look after you for all the free PR you have given them.

That hose was a recall on the 2012 model. I had it blow and cook the motor. Luckily replaced under warranty. Mazda always new they were a problem. My BT 50 had two motors three gearboxes new suspension and air con. It has been the worst ute I’ve ever had. They have been fixing stuff on it for 8years for free it cos it has been such a lemon. Blowing smoke on startup now. Hope it will last till the new Isuzu comes out.

RAC in Perth, WA were not keen at all on a roadside collection just south of Kojonup (263km south of Perth), and furthermore, they were not able/willing to entertain backloading on a flatbed like you had, or even towing our 26' van. I guess you have to factor such a situation into the equation when you are travelling for months or years on end. It's now late Jan, you guys are probably in Cairns and the car is fixed or nearly so, but the wet season has started late...you know what they say - when it rains, it pours, and I'm talking about the trip, not the weather! I hope Mazda is abiding the rules here in Oz - its not ok for the car to blow hose, pop the head and you guys end up with the bill regardless of being in or out of warranty - it just needs to be within the typical running lifetime of a vehicle - at least 10 years I would expect. Let us know how they treat you - we can cheer or jeer for you! Anyhow, I hope things have gone well and you guys are back on the road happy.

When you get to Cairns go straight down to Toyota and get a 200 series! I had a Mazda BT. Had problems from day 1 Bought me a 200 series haven’t looked back. Leaves the BT for dead, especially when towing

I've read lot's of reviews and I worked at a truck workshop in town with various reps coming and going in their utes. They didn't own the ute's as they were work vehicles. The Mazda's they had heaps of problems with auto trans failures predominantly but the manual's weren't fail safe either. A friend of mine was a rep and traveled the country & had the same story. Maybe it's something they've sorted on the later models. 4 cylinder expecting too much with the amount of weight on board perhaps but of coarse the hot weather put's even more stress on everything so possibly shorter travel distances departing in the early morning and be off the road by midday. Best thing and most popular ute by far everywhere is the Ford Ranger 5 cylinder 3.2. You will always have more torque and hp because you have more cylinders firing at any given time-also smoother. Aussie designed and engineered so even better. The only thing better if you take out the low ratio is a VW Amarok V6 or a Dodge Ram or Ford F150. That's some pretty serious weight you've got on the back. Bad luck with the hose blowing off-it's possibly something that could have happened to anyone and with the hot weather no doubt it all happened rather quick. Great video and a great tip with the UHF radio to keep abreast of road conditions and events out the ordinary. An area I've never being on the west coast nor the northern territory. Love to see Uluru etc. Even the Fincke racing at Alice springs would be real interesting. You guys handled it real well!

Hi from the Uk. Follow your vlogs and really enjoy everything about them. I feel your pain when something like this happens, but you seem to have a good back up plan with roadside assit. We too tow a caravan, 28footer twin axle with a Range Rover pulling it. Fickle things Range Rovers. Fantastic when they run right but can leave you pulling your hair out when things go wrong. Got a good one at the moment and it makes easy work of the towing. Absolutley love how you have set yourselves up to go off grid and still have some luxuries. Keep your chin up and hopefully the Mazda will be hauling you on more adventures soon.

You have had a pretty good run with the BT50. Especially as you’re giving it a bit of a hiding pulling all that weight. I was interested in upgrading to one but after joining the Owners group on FB I decided to pass. Heard that pipe blowing off was a common issue along with a few other common issues. Pity.

A good end to bad day. On any trip I do whether it be 100km of 10000km I always have a spare set of hoses and belts just in case. Never had to use them but cheap insurance. Always kept in my spares drawer and replace them every 4years if not used. Hopefully you’re covered under warranty.

Has no one ever told you, that you must let the engine cool all the way down before adding any fluids to it, this is so the metal that makes up the engine doesn't cool down to quickly and crack.

We are about to take off in our van and went to increase our RACQ Roadside Assist but the max towing distance is 100k. I checked RACV and they are the same. Do you have a non-standard Roadside Assist that let you have your van and ute towed to Cairns when your BT50 died? Or is the Assist you had 3 years ago no longer available? We are towing with a BT50!! Thanks, Paul

Oh I’m not sure mate.. it was racv top cover.. from memory they had to tow it to the closest repairer which at the time was cairns.

Bummer,having a breakdown, I had similar problems in 12/2014,was in RACQ,for 25Yrs,but still cost $1,400 to get to Tennant Creek,was broken down 250klm south of Tennant Creek, ended up stuck there,for 3 years,$10,500 in parts,machining, rebuilt my Winnebago engine myself in Caravan Park,I don't care if I never see Northern Territory again in my life?

Yep, just in warranty . It was a blown egr hose

We had the same thing happen to us just near Tennant Creek. Hole in the block. Sent tow vehicle and caravan back to Gold Coast on back load (cos RACQ Ultra at the time didn't cover caravan). Had 4 nights in a motel in town waiting for bus. Then 32 hrs in a McCaffety bus back to the Goldie. Never again. Will pay difference to fly. RACQ reimbursed us for the back load truck.

Known issue methinks? Mate had the same issue and did an engine in a work ute. Warranty job in the end. Good luck with it all.

I'm not sure I understand.. wouldn't you have seen the temp gauge rising when the coolant started leaking ? And then stopped the car immediately.. How did it turn into a blown head gasket so quickly ? Surely the signs were there that temp is increasing

Ronald Reagan the temp gauge only works when there’s coolant in the engine.

A coolant system holds around 10 liters of water, when it's got 15 - 20 psi behind it a blown hose can empty the engine in seconds, had a similar thing happen on a 2L diesel Hilux. Even Toyotas break sometimes.
