Economists and pension experts have issued fresh warnings that the policy is unsustainable in the long term.
That's after new stats revealed an extra 1.7 million people will be claiming the state pension compared to current levels in just 7 years. from an estimated 12.0 million to 13.7 million people
The triple lock, which guarantees pensions rise by the highest of inflation, wage growth or 2.5%, cost the government over 110 billion pounds between 2022 and 2023.

The aged pension is actually classed as a benefit. Successive uk governments have known about the blow out for decades but chose to kick the can down the road where’s sensible countries such as Germany and Australia started planning for an ageing population following WW2 but even they are finding it challenging. I believe we no option but to means test like they do in other countries. That means that those that actually need will get it. But the means testing has to of a high standard and is more work so people will need robust training! I totally agree with the caller who said that NI is just another form of tax. The rise of life expectancy is not rocket science. And Carole it’s ludicrous that we have we have retired people on very healthy company pensions also getting a state pension. That’s greed.

There is no 'pension pot' for the state pension. It's funded from general taxation from the welfare budget. People don't pay into a pension fund. Utter drivel talked yet again by the sheer economic illiteracy of these 'chatterati'. The UK pension is one of, if not, the lowest in the developed world. It's barely subsistence level and treating this as a cost to government is also economically illiterate. This money mostly goes straight back into the economy and adds to economic growth. On the other hand giving tax breaks to the very wealthy generally results in that money leaving the country and is a drain on the economy. The solution is simple: tax the rich and tax them some more as the majority are just parasites feeding off the poor. smh

Can't sell a flat if you are a leaseholder with less than 80 years without spending £80,000 or more to extend the lease. After spending on service charge, utilities bills, council taxes, what is left then? I have a basic state pension & a small annuity. Thus don't qualify for pension credit. Can't get a job when you are over 70. Even if I can, will I be taking someone's job? So much for baby boomers😂 When you need to go to a care home, have to sell your home. Was any sovereign wealth fund set up to address the issue, no. It's even worse when you take into account private defined benefit pensions. My company has shovelled an extra £billion (Yes billion!) into the defined benefit scheme which was closed to me when I joined in the early 2000s. Whilst those of us 40 and under aren't even going to see a state pension (yet they still expect us to be forking over for theirs whilst we pay into our OWN private pensions instead of expecting the state to pick it up). No, the short and concise answer is it's not sustainable and the older generations are incredibly entitled after sucking up all the cheap housing and resources their entire lives. Guess they'll just have to stop drinking so much tea, cancel their Reader's Digest subscriptions and pull themselves up by their bootstraps.
