How do you guys etch your blades? Any other processes that I didn’t mention?

I have used only vineager as etching and also mustard or only coffee, your way with ca and vineager has been best for long retention even after stone tumbling!

As always, great video! Cool that you mention that the selective hardening create different shade of metal - in damascus it is not very desirable!

Great video! I don’t coffee etch for the exact same reason. Also I can’t believe I never thought of using a q tip of full tang Damascus blades!🤦🏼‍♂️😂 I would super glue the scales, shape, knock them off, etch then epoxy them on.

Thanks Spencer! The qtip works well, I did it for the stainless San mai to see the layers on the tang. 😉

Acetone also sets the black. It's faster than waiting for it to dry. Spray on enough so it looks dry when it flashes off . If not spray a bit more.

I haven’t tried that, I will have to experiment with it. Thanks!

I started out using vinegar, but I don't like the pervasive smell of hot vinegar and the foaming issue. Then I tried something I have not heard anyone mention, which is a strong citric acid solution. It actually works as well as vinegar, if not better, has a much less pervasive smell, and doesn't foam over. You can buy powdered citric acid in bulk not very expensively.

This is a pretty old video, my process is different now. For electro-etching I just use saltwater. For Damascus etching, see the last video in my Intermediate Series playlist. 👍. Thanks for watching.

Hi there! First of all, thank you for sharing your tips and experiences with us, I'm really enjoying your Triple-T Thursday videos! :) Now let's get to the question: what do you use for stainless pattern-welded Damascus etching? any suggestions for the mixing ratio? Thank you in advance for your reply! Cheers! :)

I’m very pleased you’re getting something out of the TripleT videos! I’ve actually never done stainless Damascus but it’s on the list for this year! I think you just use regular ferric chloride in a 4:1 mix with vinegar that I use on high carbon Damascus. Thanks for watching!

Ferric chloride can be stored and used for years. I’ve had the same batch for about 2 years at this point. Thanks for watching.

I want to see someone with a user in Damascus un-etched after a year of use everyday.
@TyrellKnifeworks
@TyrellKnifeworks 3 жыл бұрын
You are saying don’t etch it and see what it looks like after a year? I’ve heard of a few people doing this. The pattern just emerges with use. Kind of a cool idea. Though it’s harder to market and get the $$ for it! If you were making it for yourself maybe.
