When i arrived at the Aircraft carrier i was stationed at there was like 3 days where i couldn't do anything but wait for paperwork so i sat on the deck of the tower and watched this for hours. Completely fascinated, I ended up working on that flight deck eventually (catapults and arresting gear, the guys with the green shirts) and it never got old.

Same here. Later as a DesRon Material Officer embarked in Nimitz, my S/R was directly under #1 JBD. Determined there were two rates on the flight deck: Aviation Equipment Draggers and Aviation Equipment Droppers (joking here, don't light me up. I'm old now...). After standing plane guard OOD on both a frigate and a destroyer and then watching flight ops from Vulture's Row, I quickly determined that we (the US) don't pay aviators enough. I was a plane captain on the USS Constellation (CV-64) and was part of an A7 squadron VA-147 and those F14 jets were certainly the cream of the crop, but also those EA-6B jets when they went full throttle for take off, your bones would rattle. One down side was our berthing was right under CAT 1 and I can still hear the sounds it made when shooting and then retracting. Its amazing we ever got any sleep. Go Navy!

I was with VFA151 from 1994-97, sailing on "Connie." Our berthing compartment was aft, beneath the arrestor cables. I can still hear the squealing of those cables paying out. Luckily, I was assigned to squadron operations for most of my enlistment and was working during flight ops. The night check guys, however... 😅 The EA-6B and its little brother, the A-6, had the most high-pitched teeth-rattling and roars upon launch of anything aboard.

I was in the pool with my Dad having a drink and conversation when the 2 Fighter Wings launched from Eglin AFB heading to the sandbox. The flight path to the beacon led right over the house, you could hear the afterburners light 15 miles away as they rotated in pairs from Eglin, one pair after the other for 25 minutes flew over the house blacked-out until slightly north of the interstate where they caught the omni, banged the burners and were on their way to NY. Thought it was over then you could hear the distinct sound of the AC-130 gunships from Hurlburt SOC heading the same way, gotta tell you it's a somber moment that will tear your eyes knowing these Fighter Wings and support were heading to war. Dad said 30+ years as a fighter pilot was no where near enough for him, he wanted to be with them.

Even if top gun was never a movie the aviation nerd in me would still think the tomcat is one of the coolest fighters ever to be produced. Sometimes I wonder what it’d be like if they remade it with stealth design, panels, and angles.

Notice that only the 3rd Tomcat lit his afterburners, and only after clearing the ship, and only briefly. Those F110-GE-400's were far superior in every way to the original TF-30's. :-)
@jacobstallcup86482 жыл бұрын
Yes they where but I will always love the look and the sound of the tf30s although they where more responsible for more deaths of the crews then enemy’s them selfs
@chilichongoes95772 жыл бұрын
It wasn't that the TF30 was a bad engine it's that the Tomcat wasn't designed to work well with it and the bad intake design would create compressor stalls consistantly
@vincentvoncarnap2 жыл бұрын
i heard that the old engines were far superior engines at high speed high altitude though
@SideSwipeGTA2 жыл бұрын
@@vincentvoncarnap No the TF-30s loved low altitude. They could do some amazing things at 5K.

On the day this was posted I was 21 years old I probably was at my grandparents house during the day celebrating Memorial Day hanging out with my family eating food then sitting on the couch listening to my grandpa tell me some stories about when he was a kid and about the Korean War later that night I was probably dealing with some drama from some girls I was dating and figuring out what bar everyone is going to that night. Today 16 years later I no longer have any grandparents alive I celebrated Memorial Day with my daughter and girlfriend. A few minutes ago I gave my daughter a kiss good night and now I’m just having a smoke in the garage watching KZbin videos enjoying the nice night. It’s crazy how fast lift changes. I know my comment has nothing to do with this video but if you still have grandparents alive don’t go to the bar and hang out with ur friends every night go get a pizza this Saturday night and bring it over to ur grandparents house spend time with them. In 10 years from now all ur friends will have family’s of their own you won’t talk to or see 99% of them anymore and you will think about all of them nights you wasted with those friends for a relationship that didn’t mean anything while ur grandparents were sitting home. If I could go back in time it wouldn’t be to get Rich or anything like that it would be to tell my young self to spend more time with family. Again sorry I’m completely off topic but maybe one person reads this and spends more time with family so they don’t regret it later.
