This was an exciting delivery aboard ‪@RegalMarine‬ 's 42 FXO. There is a lot to experience between Maryland and Stuart, Fl on a flawless delivery, let alone one with a few hiccups. Note that the issues found with the boat don't appear to a fault Regal Boats, but rather are failures to independent components found on boats from a variety of manufacturers. Issues on a complex boat are common, what made this extra challenging is none of the issues were relayed to the delivery crew ;)

@@TripSmith I have a 1990 Blackfin 29 flybridge. It's 32ft 11.5 beam weighs about 13000lbs. The crusaders have awesome power but drink alot of gas specially if the carb secondaries open up. Then it's .5mpg. So I run conservative and keep the secondaries closed by staying below 2900rpm.That's 18-20mph. I took it to the Bahamas this year, Abacos, Walkers Cay, Grand Cay, West End. Round trip from Jax then back home I spend $8400 in gas. Not horrible but not great.

Thank you for that wonderful comment countryboy. When getting the vessel to a particular destination is my goal, I'm constantly trying to learn things about the boat that might get in the way of the goal. Sharing that information to a new owner who might be focused on other things (enjoying time with friends and family aboard) is something I'm happy to do. Plus you often learn something new as they will have a good question that I may not have thought of.

If you gave me the option at the marina, with fuel being FREE, to use this 42' yatch or a C-Dory 22'.... I'd take the C-Dory every single time. @islandhopper00 I've spent too much time on the water to know.... Small boat easy. "It's not what you live in. It's how you live in it." I fish a lot. I want to anchor in creeks. I don't want to be confined to "the channel" for the trade of a more sea worthy vessel when I hate "off shore." Trip's reply is on the mark if you plan to entertain family and guests. For me? It's solo and plus 1. 42' and a 1000 hp is not my vessel.... waiting for draw bridges.... There are too many drawbacks for a hotel room. But.... There's WAY more big boats that C-Dorys.... So, I'm in the minority. You're in the majority. It that perspective, you win.

I watched him sleep on a paddle board while floating in the water!! It motivated me to try skiff camping. I converted a 14ft jon boat by putting a tent on it.and camped on it a few times. @islandhopper00 I'm relocated for a few years to Thailand. When I move back, the first thing I'm buying is a C-Dory. Unlike Trip .... I'm getting an a/c unit for the front window. I'm ripping off the bow rails. I'm putting a 36v 112 lb trust trolling motor on the bow. Game changer for marina and boat ramp maneuvers. Slinging lures in the creeks and docks.... beach approach. Backup safe motor.... With a/c.... solar power .... generator (sometimes) ... All the world is a playground. I've dreamed of "The Great Loop," but Florida has a 1,000 miles of coastline in the ICW plus 10,000 islands....Ain't Florida great? ..... I might never go north. For now? I'm enjoying S.E. As a commercial fisherman on the Chesapeake Bay, rule of thumb when on the water, always carry extra fuel ,water and oil , even if its only 5 or 10 gal. Always plan for the worst
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 18 күн бұрын
That's certainly a good rule of thumb. Unfortunately in a situation like this, things like that aren't always an option. Prior to the trip, I suggested we have a set of oil and fuel filters onboard as well as spark plugs. That request was denied in order to save time and money.... Extra fuel would have been nice, but that certainly wouldn't have been in the cards if the filters and plugs weren't approved.

Regals are notorious for clicking the pump off early. They have poor venting on the tanks and the fill hoses to the tanks are not run through the boat well. If you fueled and it clicked off 1 time you were probably not full. Plus the Garmin fuel gauges linked to the sending unit is definitely not 100% accurate. It works but you have to learn the boat to find out how many gallons are left at a certain %.

so what was the deal? was the tank really mislabeled (doubtful)? i always take a worst case fuel burn and factor that in as well as compare against gauges. should never run out of fuel with topped off tanks even with a bad gauge. also, horrible idea to fuel up with the sender removed. lots of amateur errors.
@TripSmith
@TripSmith 18 күн бұрын
After starting with that empty tank, I never got more that 400 gallons in it. The calculated fuel burned was pretty close to what it took to return back to a "full tank". The label being off by 100 gallons probably rules out anything like the tank was sitting level and never was full or that all of the tanks capacity except for 100 gallons could be acessed by the fuel pickup hose. From what I can see, it's hard to believe the tank was over 400 gallons, not even 420 as the boat can be optioned with a 420 gallon or a 500 gallon tank. My worse case fuel would have been extreme as I was not burning anywhere near that. Using that in my calculations would have added a couple of days at least to the delivery. Owners typically aren't a fan of casual timelines since they are paying day rates. There was no comparing against gauges option.... We did fill up after the first day and the amount we put into the tank matched the amount we burned. There was no good way to know if the tank was 100% full, other than checking it manually, which we didn't do and most would no have done that. You are right, and I wouldn't have ran out of fuel with topped off tanks. Removing the fuel sender was a bit of a risky move, but it was important to know if the tanks were full or not.... The plan was to go on the 420 gallon tank capacity and start manually watching the ank fill as we approached that amount of fuel. However, the tank being 400 gallons was not a thought and caused a bit of fuel to be leaked out. Luckily, I was still paying close attention to the process. I appreciate you insight.
@chrisb9028
@chrisb9028 12 күн бұрын
@@TripSmith The tank being less than noted and the fuel sender , that looks new, is a dead giveaway to a coverup. Whoever owned the boat before either unhooked it at the helm or did a purposeful incomplete recalibration so no one would know the tank issue. Also may have messed with the vent so no one would expect anything when the gas pump clicked off.

I was expecting a little backlash to that, how lucky I am that it came from mrbacklash himself! LOL That certainly was not the best situation, but it was the only solution I found at the time. Since we were staying the night right there at the fuel dock, I didn't see it being quite as big of a red flag if we were going to be running again. We made sure to ventilate the compartment well and properly dispose of any fuel that leaked out.

You are probably right, but I think there are various reasons why someone may prefer this way. An owner is usually pretty excited about getting their family aboard and using their new boat. Had it not have been for this "shakedown cruise" delivery, the owner may have found himself in a similar situation we did. Or there could have been other things wrong with the boat as well that would not be apparent until it's used.

@TripSmith 18 күн бұрын
I don't recall explaining my understanding of no wake zones.... I was pointing out the boaters and marinas as that is what most of those wake zones were probably intended for. Regardless, it's tough for me to understand fully a no wake zone is for habitat preservation/erosion when they are in man-made canals. Seems the digging of those canals contradict habitat preservation and erosion, and there are surely more than 1,000 miles of them.

Twice a day at 400 gals per is 800 gals a day. 800 gallons at $5.00 gal= $4000.00 My boat gets .8 mpg.....if I drive nice. .5 mpg if I'm running hard. Twin 454 crusaders. Lol

Just about. I'd say we averaged about 325 gallons each time we filled up, so that was 650 gallons/day.

So you pay for a heap of fuel that you don't get. I think when I get the bill for the fuel I would know if I got enough 😂😢😢
