How do you feel about how necessary guard passing is for MMA or just combatives in general? It also seems to be a category of technique that is made more necessary in sport grappling rulesets that may not allow a lot of leglocking, no strikes obviously, and someone may just sit down on their ass right away negating your ability to take them down and land in top position. I just remember being in a pure BJJ class, starting off my knees damn near every round, and the instructor wouldnt allow leg locks and no striking obviously. I had no choice but to learn guard passing when in reality I'm not sure how much I'd bother when I can just beat on someone or crank their ankle, etc... Anyways, awesome videos as usual. Good to see you active on KZbin again.

The only time guard passing is actually a problem is against BJJ guys with good guards. In MMA yes passing is a thing (if your opponent has a good guard), but due to ground and pound, it’s not as important (kinda). But, I do believe in advancing position no matter what, so regardless of the sport or fight, our goal should be to finish and it is tougher to finish someone in guard…. So yea passing is a thing lol, but if you’re training for self defense/combat where fighting on the ground really shouldn’t be the objective, then guard passing should not be a bulk of your training

In a fight without passing guard you'll get your knees and faced kicked in

If that's the case, we'd see more "knees and faces kicked in" in MMA
Just because there’s a highlight video of it that featured 3-4 fights doesn’t mean that it’s “a thing”. My old coach would say you’re “managing to the exception”. Which means you’re trying to find obscure things to prove a point. Plain and simple, yes up kicks are “a thing” but it’s not even 1% of the skills you need to fight MMA or self defense

I’m about 5’7-5’8. Trying to keep closed guard on anyone over 170 lbs always seems difficult. I want to try more on half guard and get better with transitions from there (as well as closed guard)
