Have you ever heard of an Injector Small Quantity Relearn? This is a service item that should be done on a regular basis, according to the manufacturers’ requirements.

most modern cars now have relearn on all sensors and engine management systems. well done good content

Hi Max when you do a supply pump correction learning procedure how long do need to leave motor idling after initializing. It doesn't tell you in the denso documentation.

Love watching your videos. What scan tool do you recommend for the average back yard mechanic. I want to do this exact job along with fuel line leak check etc. Dealers charge an arm and leg for intake/egr clean.

Hey Warren10241, Wow, that's a loaded question! It all depends on the money you are willing to spend and what you expect from a scan tool. Generally speaking, the cheaper 'scan tools' are just a code reader. In other words, they are able to read codes, clear some codes and do some very basic tests. A proper scan tool (this is where the money gets spent) is a bi-directional tool. This means that you are able to carry out actuations or control some systems, which helps with diagnosing faults. Also it will include 'special functions', which includes the relearns with injectors and DPF, just to name 2. Once again, unfortunately, it depends on how much money you are willing to part with. Hey Bob, A common rail diesel injection system with use multiple injections per cycle. This could include Pre, Main & Post, however, it could be as many as 5 distinct sections to the injection phase. The small quantity injection is usually done during the Pilot phase. As parts wear and conditions change, adjustments must be made to compensate for these changes, so Small Injection Quantity Learning will adjust the acceleration per cylinder in order to achieve maximum engine smoothness. In some cases the vehicle will execute automated Small Injection Quantity Learning during normal operation every several thousand kilometres. So, long story long 😊, no this won't effect any settings due to modifications, in fact, it will improve the smooth operation of the engine. MiracleMAX

I had my intake manifold and EGR ultrasonic cleaned in December 2020. Would I need a SQR? I get the same issue of a delayed start in the morning or when the engine is cold. Cranks over 6 times before it’s starts with lots of white smoke coming out the back. The priming pump on the filter is usually soft in the morning which makes me think that air is leaking into the system somewhere. Help please.

As mentioned in the video, a relearn should be done as regular maintenance during servicing, not just during major repairs. Yes, a relearn should definitely be done after an intake clean.

hi max.. I have a opel corsa d 1.7 diesel with Isuzu motor.. I replace the injectors, I make the code in injectors with new codes, but after I start the engine I have a permanent faulse code p1602-4b that's says (small quantities learning not have done.. and I go next to do this, and when I done this learning, the ecu can done.. any idea?? and of course I have and check engine light

Hey Andreas, This seems to be a common problem. Did you use genuine injectors? These seem to be very fussy with the correct injectors. Did it FULLY complete the injector relearn?

Hi Max, great video mate. I've just had a major rebuild on a seized 4D56, ouch! and have had a service done after the first one thousand k's. The engine is surging a bit when accelerating since that service. Could this be down to the need for the SIQR? Also, how much should it cost to get the SIQR done? Cheers mate.

Hey Steve. Glad you are up and running again. Very difficult to say what the issue could be without all the details, fault codes and live data. It could be as simple as a vacuum leak or a connector accidently left of a sensor. To do the procedure it would take about an hour, including a decent road test to create the correct conditions. Hello I have a double cab mitsubishi L200 2012 model in Greece, and when at low speeds and downhill it goes often into safe mode( 3rd gear D3 and wont change, so I need to switch off to clear it). What can it be?

Just curious what would be main reason my triton won't relearn. Mitsubishi tried to no avail.

Hey Stephen, The relearn procedure has very specific parameters that must be followed. Have a look at this section where I discuss the conditions. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGfCo6hpjd2CaJI If these are not followed to the letter, the ECU will not allow the relearn to take place. Sometimes it requires a lot of patience on the part of the technician for those conditions to take place.

They need to be at above 80 degrees, so idling won’t produce enough heat mine idles at 75C

"Quite often these won't carry out a relearn during the road test" That's because for the relearn to be accurate, the vehicle is supposed to be up to temperature, on level ground, in park and no load on the engine from things like a/c, lights etc. The engine measures the rpm changes from very small alterations to fueling to each injector. These wouldn't be reliably measured with other loads on the engine.

Also I will add, I carry out my relearns with an Android app called "NMPS diag", which is for Mitsubishi engines. It can connect with a obd cable or Bluetooth/WiFi adapter. It only costs a couple of dollars, and it works very well. There are a lot of other functions within the app as well. I haven't actually used one myself, but I suspect it can do a lot of what the MUT tool can do, maybe more.

You will need to calibrate your injectors when you install them using the appropriate scan tool. What fault codes do you have with the check engine light on?

Hey EJ Saab, To be honest, I'm not sure. I guess most higher end scan tools would have those features. Snap On, GScan, Autel to name a few. Here in Australia, I have dealt with Mount Auto Equip for many years and have been happy with their service. No. That is set into the EPROM. You are simply carrying out a reset.

I have all the temputures right but still not letting me start ny relearn ahhh. Maybe because i have egr light keep coming on even after i clear it?

You will need to make sure the system is operating correctly before carrying out a relearn. That being said, they can be a real pain to set all the parameters right, including steering static, lights off, a/c off & and few others I can't remember at the moment.

Apparently Dual chargers, dual batteries, bcdc or performance chips can cause errors in commencing a SQL and best to disconnect them prior to commencing.

Hi Max, Good videos, regarding the Scan tool you use (G-Scan is it),for the Tritons Small Injection Quantity Relearn, do you have to buy software upgardes subscription to keep the tablet software going, or will it still work without payment upgrade subscription? Do you know of any other brands that do this job without payment subscriptions? How come those 2 types of triton engines have to be relearned, isnt the ECU any good? And Ive been looking around for other brand of tablet and theres ones with Injector Coding, so is this the same as Small Injection Quantity Relearn. Sorry to ask so many questions. Thanks

Let's try and answer your questions, Scott. I honestly don't know if the remaining software will continue if they are out of subscription. However, that being said, I have used a GScan 1 that is no longer supported with software, but it is still useable. Can't help you with non-subscription scan tools. You would have to contact a supplier so that they could contact the manufacturer. Coding is not the same as a relearn. Each injector is slightly different to the next. So the 'batch number' is what you use to code the injector to the ECU. Relearns are used to adapt to changes within the correct combustion process in the engine as modified by the ECU. As parts wear, emissions, fuel economy etc, are adjusted for by the ECU. A relearn helps to get the injector pulse width time back into a corrected setting.

Ok Thanks Max, very much appreciated, so do you know what other Brands do the relearn to look around and thats good that your g-scan 1 still works, did it have sunsbsription when you bought it and do you know how many seconds is good for the triton to start up, I timed mine and took about 1 and half seconds to fire up after ignition start position, but in winter time it was longer, but good now that weather has warmed up, would that be battery doesnt like cold weather ot diesels just dont like to fire up as quick when cold. Thanks

@@scottbrewster4032 I've always used subscriptions - love 'em or hate 'em. In my business, I have to be up to date. Most higher end scan tools will do a relearn. Try the Autel range of scan tools. There are others around. Topdon also has quite a range that might be useful. As for the hard starting, have you tested your glow plugs?

Hi Max, great video thanx. I got a 2016 Mitsubishi Triton MQ. Is the procedure same with the MQ /MR Triton too ? Also I am planning to clean the intake throttle body . So If I clean the throttle body, do I need do a throttle learn or idler learn function on the scan tool ? Thanx mate

I believe that the injection relearn is the same on that model & yes you should do a relearn on the throttle body as well. This can be found in the 'special function' area on the scan tool

Hey abduol salam CAPO-CHICHI , The systems on these vehicles are very fussy with their criteria. Take it for a road test and then usually when you come back, most of the conditions will be set. Look carefully at the conditions. Just like in the video, the temperature is usually the reason for it not carrying out the procedure. MiracleMAX
