A lot of really good stuff in this episode, thanks guys. I guess my takeaways were 1) I wish we had a separate category for plated premium daily trainers rather than just lumping everything in with the supertrainer label. There is a massive difference between shoes like the Superblast and Neo Vista with their capabilities versus most of the shoes that are getting put into that category 2) I guess the running store/online review thing really depends on which store you can get to. Some stores are the absolute best at getting people involved and are filled with knowledgeable staff who just want you to have the right shoe. Some, especially the big chain companies want you to get things that you don't need, and some of their folks are questionable knowledgewise. I dunno, I wish there were more local run shops rather than chains being the biggest things now but I guess with online reviews and the majority of online outlets (Running Warehouse for example) you don't have to go to a store if your local options aren't great

The running store vs reviews is such a fascinating discussion. Both sides of that bring bias on so many levels. When I go into a store and see huge Brooks and Hoka displays, it makes me pause for a moment. But running shoe reviews are also like that, as many reviews are definitely biased towards a brand or a type of shoe. I think a "both" approach is best. I'm in a small town about 80 miles from Fort Worth, Texas, and we have around 250 active runners in our local club (truly incredible!!), and my observation is that those who go to the running shoe stores in Fort Worth typically come home with a Brooks or a Hoka.

Guys, love the show, could you mention actual per mile/km paces when you say 'marathon/5km/whatever pace' It's makes talking about shoes so much more useful.
@Fozzee.19704 ай бұрын
Depends on the runner
@mattheweley4 ай бұрын
Disagree. Given that one person’s 5k pace could be equivalent to another’s marathon pace, referring to the “pace” as an analogue for “intensity,” as DOR crew does is much more appropriate. It’s also quite common to refer to paces this way in shoe and training vernacular broadly
@macfin48624 ай бұрын
I know a lot of reviewers seem to resist mentioning pace, but saying 'oh this is a wonderful 5km shoe' doesn't really apply to someone that runs a 5km 10 minutes slower. I think the biggest discrepancy is talking about 'easy runs', a lot of trained runners easy pace is going to be up around or faster than a beginners 10km pace and it's the beginners that need the most help. So if they hear the actual pace of an easy run and that a shoe suits that pace, which happens to be their goal pace, they may make a more informed decision.

I agree. Actual pace does matter. Effort is primarily physiological. Pace is about interaction of biomechanics and physical characteristics of the shoe. One of these factors is how a foam compresses and rebounds. Some have fast response and some slower, and that's going to directly impact the running pace that the shoe works best for.

@@gtromblewell said. Agree with this. I'm glad the Run Testers are starting to put their actual place in videos now.

Appreciate Nathan's perspective / qualification that his preference for the Triumph is based on what his current situational needs / limits are. It's a very critical distinction. One other observation regarding the super-trainer / PEBA conversation. The Boston 12 contains Lightstrike Pro which is not PEBA (Supercritical TPEE) but is widely-considered a supertrainer... I think the specific PEBA requirement is myopic. It's more the resiliency of the foam / cushioning tech, yes? Theoretically, Nike could put a plate with / on-top-of zoom-air and be half-way to a super-trainer midsole... (i.e. if you look at some of their basketball shoes with shank configurations, etc)

@DoctorsofRunning At 41:12 you.say "Hey, we'll make it super skinny but we'll make it so tall so we have this huge volume. Obviously that's not how feet work"...... well I can tell you that is EXACTLY how my feet work. I have narrow feet but the highest instep. I know this is unusual in that usually it is wide feet with a high instep or narrow feet with a low instep, but not for me. Do you have any recommendations for narrow feet with high instep? Because I am having trouble getting good lockdown on shoes too wide without getting a numb forefoot after 5km.

There’s another comment here asking for pace on race distances. Has me thinking this or that. Pace or effort when deciding on a shoe. If you guys have already done that, anyone able to point me to the episode?

The triumph 22 is the best looking triumph ive ever seen. Most ppl are just slow pace joggers. Most ppl are not doing skow runs and fast runs...most ppl just jog

Regarding your Mach 6 discussion, I'd say there is a difference between wide and a low-volume fit. I find that normal Hokas fit me in width ok, but the volume on nearly all the Hoka shoes is so low that it uncomfortably presses on my forefoot. I had the same issue with the Altra FWD shoe too. Edit: I typed this before I heard your discussion on width vs volume!

Been having a lot of left side piriformis/gluteal issues since April. I am currently in PT and coach has me deloading, but what shoes would be good to take the pressure off my hips? Speaking of the Triumph 20/21, it been my daily trainer for awhile now. Mixed in the Speed 2 and 3 here and there. I had serious ankle Achilles issues and these shoes worked so well for me. My ankles are completely healed and fine now, the hip has gone sideways. 😂

Everyone complains about the Mach 6 toebox.. Why Nitro buy it in wide?
@Kaisersozze4 ай бұрын
Triumph has a 10mm drop, that's an automatic no for me. Also the toebox on Saucony shoes I find a bit too narrow. I even gave it a chance and got hotspots on the balls of my feet. I like my Superblast once I broke it in.

@DoctorsofRunning Good! I've been an Escalante fan boy since their introduction in 2017, and no matter how frustrated I've been with the different tweaks Altra has made to this shoe, I can't seem to quit them no matter what.

Running store is so hit or miss. so many just want to pressure weak willed individuals into what they want to sell you. My partner literally refuses to go any of the running stores without me as a mediator with the salesperson. I'm quite cold and analytical so it makes sense, I've had many folks ask me to accompany them to car dealerships well as a mediator. The real question is why does going to the running shoe store feel like a car dealership? That's the real issue.

Bro just chose Triumph over Superblast. Whaaaat? Saucony better be a prime sponsor from this day forward, because that's loony no matter what kind of running you're doing.
@snowwalker99994 ай бұрын
Superblast is superior even though it’s overpriced. Saucony shoes however are underrated despite their popularity. Most elite runners get sponsored by Asics Adidas Nike Puma or On. I have both Superblast and Triumph 21 and I keep finding myself reaching for the Triumph.
@Aron-t6m4 ай бұрын
That's how it seems to me too a lot of sponsored hype. I have a very large shoe collection and the Superblast is one of the best shoes I have ever worn. For me it's currently the best all-round shoe. Triumph 21 is a slow, comfortable shoe no more and the heel is definitely a bit too high, which the 10mm drop further promotes.
@snowwalker99994 ай бұрын
@@Aron-t6m I agree. I have a love hate relationship with the 10mm drop in the Triumph, it provides some comfort but when running you just wish it was lower like 6-7 mm. All high stack shoes should not have more than 8mm drop.
@gtromble4 ай бұрын
They're quite different shoes. He said the Triumph is better for the type of running he's doing now and it's $40 cheaper. Context matters.
