I'm still rocking with a few shoes from last year still. But I got the Monster Hyper, Velocity Nitro 3, and Gel-Cumulus 26, to name just a few. And I got to say that the one that most impressed me so far in 2024 is the Puma Velocity Nitro 3 ! It can do anything and every good in anything ( but very slow pace). It's also worth saying that I overpronate, and I totally hated the Velocity Nitro 2, it didnot work for my gate, overpronation and the way I run. Nice job Puma with the Velocity Nitro 3 !

General question - have you ever looked into water retention in midsoles in various running shoes? I am a 'big dripper' when I run and my shoes tend to get waterlogged during summer runs in the mid-Atlantic, to the point where I leave wet footprints on the asphalt and have a full-on goldfish bowl of water underfoot (regardless of the composition of the upper, though some do better than others). Some shoes dry out better than others, but others stay heavy and damp for more than a day, even though the upper has dried. Thus a 9 oz. shoe can become an 11 oz. shoe and stay that way through a long run. I am a 3:30 marathoner / sub 1:40 half and run between 45-55 miles/week. Currently, I rotate between a Saucony stack (Speed 3, Speed 4 and Pro 4) and an Asics stack (Superblast 2 and Metaspeed Sky Paris).

I’ve run 2500km in 40 different shoes in 2024 - so far. I volunteer with the Canadian Sport Institute. Totally agree about NB 880 as daily trainer. Felt great and performed best in category for 10k at 80% 10k pace. I love the feel of the Saucony Triumph as well, but do prefer the old version and the 880’s with 8mm drop instead of the truimph 21 and 22 10mm drop. Supershoe category? ASICS meta speed edge 10k performance statistics equaled the Nike Vaporfly, but just felt better on foot for marathon distance. I chose these to volunteer pace the Chicago Marathon in next month. I think I would be carrying the vaporflys and barefoot at 30k if I tried those - just too narrow and toes tingle. So many of the Saucony shoes have that toe box taper issue discussed in the podcast and put my toes to sleep. Nike Alpha and Vaporflys too. Of the 40 shoes I’ve run in in 2024 about 20 put my toes to sleep. I think about half of those I might be able to fix with lacing changes. My pinky needs some room. But I agree with the hosts: NB 880, Saucony Triumph.

Do you find the drop feels really low or almost negative? Tried them on in store, may have just been the rocker though and a strange sensation when standing
@jt.81447 ай бұрын
@@macfin4862 : Never liked em. I always ran with Cloudsurfer 7s. Having bought and taken out the NB REBEL V4 on an initial run totally changed how my feet worked with the shoe. The heels were low to the point that I couldn't heel to toe off as if I'm using a "rocker type shoe" The REBEL V4 forced me to Midfoot strike and Toe off. Which was all new to me. My calves were sore and stiff for a few days after. Now I just use the Rebel V4 for grocery shopping and walking . That low heel is a nightmare for heel to toe strikers. If I get sick of em some kid in Africa will be so lucky to get a Brand New pair of NB Rebel V4s. thanks to Soles for Souls.
@Stuey0016 ай бұрын
@@macfin4862agree. I’m a bigger runner and I find that just standing around or walking they feel like they have a zero or negative “drop” because the foam in the heel is so soft.

difference to the 15 (which i have) = ? The 15 is a bit hard. In the video he said that the 16 is the first he wears sockless... i wear the 15 sockless and i could also use socks if i want to. But i have a very low instep and very low volume feet, so every(!) toebox is roomy for me ;)

Great review of current and ‘still available’ running shoes for 2024. Thanks for putting it together. I’m a big fan of the Novablast 3 and Triumph 20/21, but the shoe I most like is the nike zoom fly 5. For me, the zf5 has great cushion with the zoomx blend foam, but also provides great response and energy return from the relatively stiff cf plate. I know most people hate the zf5, but not me. What’s your take on the zf5? Thanks in advance.
@TheNewOriginals4507 ай бұрын
I loved the Novablast 3 too ( 3 pairs ) but there's no doubt the 4 is better for me. Still great cushioning but they roll over much better ( more snappy rockering ) and my feet really transition much faster .

Really enjoying and learning from your reviews and teachings! After much research I decided to pre-order the Novablast 4 but got impatient and also bought the Novablast 3 on sale. I wish I hadn’t. Unlike you, for me they have a very different feel underfoot. Since then I’ve put many training and race miles including 4 half marathons this year on the Novablast 4. I’ve only put 15 miles over several shorts runs on the 3’s because for me the metatarsal area literally slaps the pavement and the treadmill. That said, I love the 4’s with my only comment on improvement would be a bit less width in the metatarsal area. Thanks guys! Have you done a talk on drops and which ones might be best for individual runners?

I use the Streakfly regularly as my training shoe. Odd choice I know, and it doesn't last. But it felt like a mini Superblast that's even more forgiving to me, plus the light weight encourages a good cadence for me.
@burntorangehorn3 ай бұрын
But does increased speed/efficiency gained from super trainers actually translate into better race performance? For that matter, I would think the opposite to be more likely, unless there were a major mechanics difference. Seems like going from relatively plodding shoes in practice to a pair of Takumi Sens would yield a better result than going from super trainers to Takumi Sens, for example.

Glycerin GTS have been the best surprise of the year for me, for sure. Super comfortable and plenty stable, but the ride for me was way better than that Kayano 30 and Wave Inspire. Like the Guide 17, but I think maybe it's the rocker that really irritates my achilles/bottom of soleus area a lot? Never had issues in that area ever until I started wearing some of the more rockered shoes.

17.45 whole hogging a stroller is legit asf. i mean you're a doctor, not a professional athlete, I'd say it's very impressive. better than I could do without the stroller. My favorite shoe of 2024 is for the love of god I wish they would quit changing every model so often so we can find someone that actually works, stick with it, and still have it exist by the time it needs replaced. Just me? I tried the 1080v13 but something is just wrong with it, overly compliant midsole in the heel + low drop = ehhh, iffy. So, it's v12 all day. That's such a good all around shoe for what I like. fits the bit for how you described the 880, I think it was.

I define a super trainer as a NON plated shoe that shares high tech elements like foams etc... Stack height IDC about as much as I care about the feel and responsiveness and lightness
@gtromble7 ай бұрын
Supertrainers improve your running efficiency by lightening your wallet significantly. Personally, I'm pretty much over the use of Super in running shoes. And really, have you been saying all this time that Lightstrike Pro was not a "super foam" because it wasn't PEBA?
@jt.81447 ай бұрын
At the end of the day How does the shoe work for you? Putting all the jargon aside.
@edwinduisburg81387 ай бұрын
Well, I'll say it then: Super Trainers are marketing tricks that brands have been pushing on lately. People buy these phantom shoes hoping that it will actually benefit them more than any other trainer on the market. On the contrary, some running shoes that sell 40-50$ cheaper happens to be more consistent overall than so called 'Super Trainers'. This marketing strategy not exclusive to running but it's more exaggerated since most of the reviews are subjective and it is open to interpretation.
