I have a Tr3 and TR4, both have overdrive on 2nd 3rd and 4th gears. Over 50 years of driving these cars I have learned to pop the clutch as I am shifting into Overdrive. This smooths the change to overdrive and takes the strain away from gearbox and overdrive during the change to higher ratio. No need to use clutch when switching out of overdrive. Really have enjoyed watching your restoration journey. The TR4 is a simply engineered and in my opinion, a beatifully styled car that will give you a smile on your face everytime you drive it out on the open road. The final result will be worth the effort. Great to see the old guy and the young gun working so well together.

Thanks for the kind words and info on overdrive engagement! Will give the "clutch into od" technique a try next time. Sounds like a good idea.

Hi Sir I was wondering if you have any advice on doing a wheel alignment on my 1959 TR3A! Ive done a complete frame off restoration of this car in Honor of my POP , an original member of TRA from 1974! Any advice you can give me will be Greatly Appreciated! Thank You

My TR4 engages O/D smoothly and immediately. perhaps check the oil pump, particularly oil viscosity perhaps. I have to use a slight trailing throttle to disengage smoothly however. Perhaps that is wear, I don't know. What a terrific job you are both doing so far. your clips have been really informative.

Just come across your videos. Great stuff, watched about 20 back-to-back. Clear descriptions and nicely delivered. I'd second the comments about easing off the gas slightly when engaging OD.

Wow that is awesome! Glad we can now call ourselves "binge-worthy." Welcome to the Garage!

That small jerk when you turn the OD on is normal as I remember from my MGB days. Love your show BTW.

Thanks! Good to have that confirmation. Sounds like it is normal. Super happy to hear you enjoy the show!

I am in the middle of converting a non-OD TR6 to OD, and your videos have been helpful and entertaining. Thank you for taking the time to share!

and to add have always had engagement on 2nd, 3rd and 4th as mentioned by another fan below. Makes the whole setup very versatile when driving in city limits.
@WegsGarage4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Does this setup have another limit switch then or am I misunderstanding how the switches work?

Wegs Garage I don’t actually know to be honest. I’ve not ever had to work on my gearbox or overdrive.

I had the same problem with overdrive in my 2000TC. It was easily fixed by topping up gear box oil to the correct level.
@davidschuller9864 жыл бұрын
A small jerk is normal having owned TR4's and TR6's with OD - you learn to slightly back off the throttle when OD engaging and you can smooth it so almost imperceptible. Practice makes perfect.

Looking forward to practicing this skill! Thanks for the comment!

The best way is to use youre clutch before you use the overdrive. 🤗
@roundtailrestoration4 жыл бұрын
Good job, guys. My guess is that jerk is normal since you are engaging essentially a new system immediately...no smooth engagement like if there was a synchro 5th or something. That's a total guess, however. On a personal note, I notice that your 1st gear sounds just like mine...loud and whinny. Straight-cut gear with no synchro? Makes me feel better!
@WegsGarage4 жыл бұрын
Yes straight cut, no synchro seems to be a very LOUD combo! Imagine buying a new car today that was this finicky! 🙃

The sound of metal moving past metal? It is an electric overdrive
@maureenhogan4032 Жыл бұрын
If you don't clutch the overdrive you are gonna get a jerk when you engage the overdrive ! You need to treat it like a gear, Clutch then overdrive for a smooth operation.. !
