Caught between a rock and a hard place. This song is based on The Odyssey by Homer. In it, the character of Odysseus was on a long voyage home after his 10-year participation in the Trojan War. On both sides of the Strait of Messina between Sicily and Calabria in the Mediterranean Sea, there were two mythical creatures believed to be a shoal and a whirlpool; Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla is often depicted as a six-headed beast that snatched sailors from their ships one by one, and Charybdis is a gaping maw that swallowed ships whole. In order to get his men home, Odysseus had to make a choice to pass by either. If he chose Scylla, several of his men would die at a time, but the rest would survive. If he chose Charybdis, either their ship would pass by unscathed or his entire crew would die. Unfortunately, they panic when confronted with Scylla and get swept into the mouth of Charybdis. Only Odysseus survived. The line "Face down that which makes you bleed; turn it 'round and force your seed" is a crass remark about dominating every difficult life decision. The song is ultimately about overcoming obstacles and making the most of life. Taking charge and violating the opposition. 😅 Trivium's original drummer Travis Smith played here, and on the 3 albums before Shogun. Compositionally, he's one of the greatest drummers I've heard in my life. Technically, their newest drummer Alex Bent is the only better player in the band's history. There were 3 drummers in between, though their work is generally not considered as impressive. You're definitely going to love both Travis and Alex. Both guitarists in the band are extremely proficient and traded off a lot of leads and rhythms here, as they do in other songs. Those would be Matt and Corey. Matt generally plays the melodic parts while Corey plays the blistering shred, though both are capable of either to an insane degree, and obviously their harmonies are extremely precise. Matt also does every vocal in the studio, generally. The dynamics of his harsh cleans, low growls, and melodic cleans, particularly around the Shogun era, are legendary. Those two instrumental breaks in the bridge where Matt screamed "DOWN!" were bass solos by Paolo. Trivium are very unique in that they occasionally sneak those little touches into songs in tribute to Cliff Burton from Metallica. You'll come across a few more of them eventually. Shogun is a very special album and easily the most complex Trivium have released. That said, the other two songs I've been requesting are simpler and more about feeling. One is from Ascendancy and the other is another from Shogun. You'll have an easier time with making out the instrumentals on them. Final thought: for Shogun songs on that channel at least, all of the lyrics are in the descriptions. They could've clarified that, but for other albums, it's a little hard to find any at all. It works well enough for the interpretive listeners, and I suppose it's convenient not having to scroll back to read them. Still, labeling it better would've been easy enough. They have the entire album and its bonus tracks up, so that's something to keep in mind. I'm glad you enjoyed this song! You'll definitely love the next few! Keep up the great work! 🥰

I thought I was crazy when thinking about Travis' drumming, I listen to a lot of metal and he's easily top 10 drummers ever to me. Good to know I'm not the only one that appreciates his drumming like this.

@@raiden3295, he'd composed like no one else. It'd been difficult to keep it up technically when he'd been discontented by the band's album processes and touring schedules, and he may have been able to get back into it if they'd allowed him time to reinspire himself before they'd moved to Nick, but what he'd done on their first four albums is legendary.

Hey! Trivium have some great solos where the rhythm guitar is active, unlike most others. If you notice here, the rhythm is in harmony with the lead, the solo switches gears at the same time the rhythm does. To clear the confusion: after two verses, the song features following structure: Guitar Solo 1 by Corey on lead. Small screaming bridge. Bass Solo 1 by Paolo. Guitar Solo 2 by Matt on rhythm and vocals Bass solo 2 by Paolo. And yes, on the opening and ending, there are at least 3 guitar tracks going. Two leads and a rhythm.

Oh man I love this band so much, i've discovered them like 6 years ago and since they have become my favourite band, not just because of their music but because of the band members themselves and their personalities. They absoultely adore their fans since that's all they got in a sense because they never really blew up to be a huge band. Every single member of the band streams on twitch daily playing music and games with each other and fans as well sometimes. For me their last 2 albums are my favourits (and the Shogun album from 2008) because they got a new drummer in the form of Alex Bent who is an absolute machine on the drums, it's insane. He really compliments the bands sound and fits in with the others and it comes out in their music. Also his live-streams are my favourite, I love watching him play insane songs on drum and chat with fans at the same time like it's nothing :D

I believe the lyrics were in the description on this specific video. Eventually you might get to the point where you can understand the growls without having to look at the lyrics. I cant really explain how or why that happens but it does for some people.

To be honest, I find this really stupid. She is right, if you say with lyrics, the viewer expects them on screen, not behind a description that comes predominantly hidden. Anyway, nowadays. a lot of labels themselves post songs with lyrics in description. Wish it was the case at that time as well.

Talk about loaded with excitement. Not fully understanding the lyrics, I let the music do the talking. Like a futuristic combat on an alien planet, employing otherworldly technology to go after results, and survive each melee. Piled deep with musical thrills that quicken the pulse, and cause heavy breathing. Like it?. More like love it. I'm taken to thinking the drummer had 22 arms. How else could he play that fast? I'm a long way from the UK's domestic issues. I didn't know about it at all until you mentioned it!!!! (No TV, no radio, no news papers ect. Can't be doing with that stuff).
