I was just going to comment......that crap drives me nuts. When people do things like that, it makes me think they have no respect for their instrument, so in that case, either do I and I move on.....hard pass, thank you. In short; it is ignorant. Like showcasing your Lambo in a gravel pit.....looks cool, but something bad is definitely going to happen.

I found it interesting that they never showed the back of the body but in one photo you can barely see what is likely the edge of some significant finish loss. Not an issue with me as I own a 1969 Les Paul Custom and the back has about 1/4 of the finish missing, it looked like that when I bought it in 1987 as it was a heavily gigged guitar, hasn't been photographed on rocks that I know of! The pot codes look right in this one (they are super close in manufacture to those in mine) but I think the capacitors were replaced. Mine has original .022μf 600v Sprague caps in it this 69 has .039μf 400v caps that I'm assuming aren't original. Pickups look good and even though it shares the transitional tenon that mine has the cavity routing is slightly different, but they were changing things CONSTANTLY at that point in 69 so that wouldn't necessarily worry me. There is a little finish flaking weirdness at the heel joint that would worry me and that serial number would make me question whether it has at least had a headstock repair and refinish long enough ago that it has aged (or been aged.) The serial number on mine is cleanly stamped but VERY shallow (about 4,500 lower than this one) and even a thin coat of paint or any sanding would probably obliterate all or part of it which might be why they crudely traced it.
@jubaldurden46384 жыл бұрын
Parents, spouses, and children of the original owners. Someone dies, or moves away, and the guitar itself is worthless to the new "owner" as an item. They hear, "that could be worth something. You should sell it on Ebay." So in their mind, they're already spending the money, and they know nothing of maintenance, basic care, or even respect for the guitar.

About the stratosphere, I bought a new 2019 Gibson explorer from them, and built it up with all gold hardware, grovers, Seymour Duncan pickups, actual Gibson Nashville bridge and tailpiece, and all high end electronics and parts. Total came to $1108.78 for a brand new Gibson explorer. Normal price is $1699. I saved nearly $600 and got exactly what I want. The only mod I did was I got a custom pickguard with no hole for the switch and moved the switch to the first volume position, which makes more sense playability wise to me.

Another way you can find ebay deals is going to other countries local sites, not all auctions are listed on the ".com". Because these are smaller markets you don't have to compete with as many bidders, and there's not as many people buying guitars there in general the prices can be even lower still.

I have one of those Custom Shop Jazzmasters with the bigsby and a pinup on it. I found mine on ebay. Someone was parting it out and all I could get was the body and the Bigsby. I had warmoth make a neck and a Moto pickguard for it. The 3 single coil pickups and switches were confusing to them and they didn't get the neck right. Ended up with Moto-ish binding (I asked for plain white like an original) and the block inlays. It plays well, sounds better and I love showing it off.

After watching a whole bunch of your videos, I'm kinda glad I went with a Les Paul Studio. It's a 2011 in faded cherry, and I bought a Gibson (grey liner) case for it. I have a bit over $1000 USD in it counting tax. It has a couple of solid dings in it, one on the headstock and one on the edge of the fretboard at the 5th fret, as well as one slightly bent tuner machine; likely all three happened at the same time. Other than that, it was someone's gigging guitar, and has the wear you would expect from that. Since I have so little (relatively speaking) invested, the blemishes are really no big deal, and in fact serve to identify the guitar as surely as the serial number. That being said, if I had 2 or 3 grand in it, I'd be a lot less tolerant of the damage to it. Having seen a few of your 'not as described' videos I must say you show far more restraint with your comments than I would likely express. Heh, of course we don't see the off-camera comments.

EVH did play one of those Epiphone Sharkfin guitars once, he did the national anthem at a high school football game. The guitar was one that that the school's music department had and was auctioned off to raise funds after he signed it. I think he only went along because a friends kid was playing in the game. But I saw a video chronicling all of Eddie's guitars and this was in the section of oddities, along with the left handed Epiphone SG he used when miming in the pouring rain at Chevy dealership once.

I played Fenders for years and it’s crazy how many great Fender guitars get parted out. I’ve seen 50’s and 60’s preCBS Fenders parted out that would have been amazing instruments to start with. Fenders are easy to part though since everything screws together for the most part.

I sold my 1968 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop serial #519217 around 8 years ago. I did a search recently by serial and guess what? It showed up on Reverb and sold for 12,000.00. One problem is they routed it and installed humbuckers instead of the original soap bars. They also changed the Kluson tunes and replaced with Grovers, but didn't plug and refinish the original holes. I had sold it for 5,000.00. Someone got taken.

In regards to your comment about not being worth it to piece a guitar back together from Stratosphere. I did this and actually spent less money on it than if I purchased it new complete. My motivation was to build it up the way I wanted it, electronics, pickups, tuners, etc...... If I had purchased it new and then wanted to swap out those parts it would have cost me more money. I understand the guitar is NOT "original Gibson" but that was not a concern to me. It's not for everyone and certainly not for a collector type person but if you want to build a player to your specs I recommend it

I used to buy a lot of stuff on eBay, not guitars, though it was musical gear. I was a bottom feeder. I was always looking for a great deal and was willing to lose any auction at any time to somebody willing to pay more. I bought a lot of stuff cheap. If you're patient, and stick to your price, you can buy cheap. The key is DON'T FALL IN LOVE WITH THE LISTING. There will be another one at another time.

Hey there friend! I got a question on the thing you said about building guitars. Would love to know your opinion. So, I just bought a new 2019 Gibson sg, and I love it, everything in it was solid, but as soon as I got it, I ended up switching out all the parts for gold hardware, got locking tuners, and switched out the neck pickup for a Gibson p94 pickup. And as much as I love it, I feel like I wasted money on buying all the parts then buying a brand new guitar. So, I know you said your better off buying used or new, but for the people who are very very specific, is it still worth it? Also, what are some warning signs I should look for, especially if I’m buying on eBay or reverb? Love the videos, keep up the good work! Thanks again.

Careful with that gibsondependable guy. I've bought from him a few times. Had one Les Paul arrive with a very shady crack in the headstock that he blamed on the shipping (could be but the crack looked a bit old, with dust inside and everything). The real dealbreaker with him was when I had bought a hardcase from him and told him to keep it for a few weeks until I buy a guitar so that he could ship them together. He said sure, as he has done this before. No big deal. Then after a month or so (or even more since ebay protection had ended at that point) he simply blocked me from messaging him when I had asked him to ship the hardcase.

Mecum is well known for their 'shill' bidders. Not in the traditional sense, of planted bidders used to drive up the price though. They have a lot of cars (and guitars) that get bought up at one of their auctions, and then an inordinate amount of the exact same cars are miraculously for sale at another one of their auctions!? I would bet that the 'buyers' aren't paying fees to Mecum, until it sells for what they want to get, no matter how many auctions it takes!! Buyer beware...
