I'd buy that guitar, it's cool! I just don't like the nails. I would have drilled a hole in the neck and put a tuning fork instead and do the clear epoxy like he did with the nails. A visible tuning fork near the tuning machines, added stability, you can't get a better match than that! 🍴

I owned a 62 SG back in the late 60s early 70s that I loved. I was hired to fill in with a band and my cut was $50 and it was in Malibu. After our first set I put my guitar in the standard Stage stand to get a drink. Just when I turned away a gust of wind blew and over went my SG. Snapped the headstock off when it hit the deck of the pool. I was devastated! I had it repaired and it was a really good job but I ended up selling it for $100! If I only knew back then what I know now!😭😭

I work a lot with epoxy and guitars and I can tell you from experience that once that resin sets it’s much stronger than wood. Even without any reinforcements. I have been building epoxy guitars with miniature dioramas inside them. I did one with a WWII battle scene and another with a fantasy battle. Even just the epoxy itself is great for stabilising wood. I’ve used it on a few builds where I’ve had cracks in the top or a three part body’s side has come apart at the glue seam. It’s a really handy tool to have.

there is a carbon fiber technique that only the best luthiers use to repair the headstocks. Usually done on really bad cracks where chunks of wood go missing. It has been done on my Les Paul GT by my local luthier, one of the best i've ever seen work, basically took of a big chunk of wood from the back of the headstock down to half of the neck and rebuilt it with carbon fiber sheets. Now its stronger than ever
@leonardorancati603916 күн бұрын
btw the whole headstock and the half of the neck that has been rebuilt has been painted over by hand mimicking the wood grains perfectly joining them with the original ones.

I bought a Taylor 514CE acoustic-electric for $400 because it had been smashed by the previous owners' jealous girlfriend. It had a headstock repair, and hte sides and top damage were repaired from the inside using carbon fiber sheets. It played great, but you could tell it had been through hell from the look of it on the outside. Perfect! Looked like I had played it around the world without a case... Importantly, 10 years later, and it has not moved any at all. It is completely stable, stays in tune. Plays great, and sounds great. For a player on a budget, a well-repaired guitar is the way to go, IMO.

Neck breaks seem to hold together better these days when repaired, so requiring radical solutions is not so common. My nephew's dad had '73 SG back in the mid 80s. I remember he was always breaking the neck and getting it repaired. They tried all sorts. He gave up in the end and got rid of it. I wonder if wood glue is stronger these days or something? P.S. Gibson necks breaking has become one of those meme things. GIbson had a solution, but folks did not want it. Maple necks.

Branding your tuners is actually very smart. It's like they say with cars (at least in the Netherlands, where a license plate is coupled to a car, not an owner): etch your license plate in all the windows, so when it's stolen, it's too expensive to replace everything to make it easy to sell.

The giveaway about that Flying V XPL is this - it is a player! Whoever owned that over the last 40 years really loved it, and played it hard. Not a case queen by any definition. I can almost guarantee that if I picked it up to play it, I would bring it home. Haha. And considering the odd guitars from the very late Norlin era, there is something speciaI about it. I would love to ask the previous owners about how much they used it, and why.
