One interesting could have been, in the early 80s Martyn Booth who was at Gibson UK, doing custom orders for players, made a prototype based on this that had a carved maple top and a trem. Gibson rejected this and then looked on as everyone went mad for the PRS. Eventually Booth’s design was made as the MSG by Yamaha (who actually rejected Paul in the 80s) he now makes them under his own name, along with other models. 80s Gibson UK one offs are a treasure trove of oddities, a lot were made for Jazz musicians including seven and eight strings.

This is a Gibson model that I'd overlooked. It's a bit subtle having the S at the end of ES-335 to designate it. It sounded really good with a variety of clean and distorted tones. I wish that Gibson would offer a maple neck/rosewood fingerboard option on some other models. I'd like to try a 70s Les Paul with one. The L6-S was another one that they did with all maple construction.

@rcsutter11 сағат бұрын
The wine red one at 1:19 is more my taste than the burst. The 335-S seems like it would be a good guitar for studio work, especially for someone back in the wrecking crew, wall of sound era, when the studio systems ruled the airwaves and you might need any number of sounds in a given day. I have an ES-339 which is similar but not solid body and it's very versatile and comfortable to play sitting down for hours.

I had the same deduction: It's just a shape... The 335/45/55 had a block thru build to snuff the feedback goblin, like Les Paul's Log. If this was engineered like an old Firebird, with a thru neck, I think a whole new impression would be made. Otherwise, just a shape, like an inverted V.
@joshpointoh13 сағат бұрын
I think if they carved the top with a more Les Paul-ish curve, I might love it...and if it were closer to full-size...just chamber the crap out of it till its a semi-hollow without the F-hole, lol

For some reason, it's almost like Gibson was trying to reach into Yamaha territory, attempting to glean off of yamaha's version of the solid guitar. That's not the only time when they did that; the Gibson Theodore still reminds me of the SBG-2000.

@@jp2246 I just looked at my 81 335s the tear drop is smaller and perfect for this symmetrical body style . On trogly’s the went wide and the bust goes up into the horn area. So I agree with you

Thanks for the review, Austin. I've been a bit interested in 335-Ss for some time now. Reason is that I own a Hamer Sunburst Archtop, which looks to my eyes considerably more like a solid body ES-335 than the 335-S. There is that about the Hamer that allows me the illusion that I'm playing a Les Paul; it almost looks more like a Gibson guitar than Gibson's own 335-inspired guitar!
