It is the nature of a run-oriented team to pound and pound the ball into the line for a lot of short yardage plays, then all of a sudden a linebacker fills the wrong hole and a good RB breaks a huge play. You could call Mullings' 4th quarter run a fluke, but it was the third time in the game that either he or Edwards broke loose for a big play. It was no more of a fluke than a 63 yard pass executed well by a good passing team. Neither happens very often so late in the 4th quarter with the game on the line, but the run only seems odd because it is odd in the modern game to see an offense so heavily reliant on the running game.

@@DreDay53 Michigan was regularly losing to elite teams due to having guys large enough to play bully ball, but not fast enough to provide enough team speed to win against teams that were both large and fast. It was an open admission by coaches and the AD that Michigan needed to begin recruiting for more team speed. It's not easy to recruit guys who are both big and fast. It seems Michigan found guys who were fast, and if they were a bit undersized, sent them into the weight room to bulk up. The result was a natty. Big is necessary in B1G league play due to Midwest weather in November. Windy, rainy, and 40 degrees makes it rough on an offense heavily reliant on the pass. I haven't seen it mentioned by anyone else, but USC brought perfect Southern California weather with it on this trip. Still air and 85 degrees. Dry football, dry turf. I'm curious to see how USC will fare when they play road games in bad weather in the B1G in November.

Big Mistake: Trojan's last possession with around five minutes left. Two incomplete passes that stopped the clock and gave Michigan more time... Bad time mgmt with the lead late in the game. Michigan dominated the LOS on both sides of the ball in the first half. SC made great adjustments in the second half and was able to catch and go ahead because Michigan's DC is a dimwit and used back up players for extended time. Michigan never did counter the Trojan adjustments.
@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 Ай бұрын
I'm beginning to think Wink Martindale is an old guy whose career is behind him. He's just going through the motions expected of a DC and drawing a paycheck. His vaunted defense left one guy so wide open in the back of the end zone that I could have completed that pass. He followed that up with leaving another guy even more wide open to where my wife could have completed that TD pass. Sometimes its a missed coverage. But sometimes the players are positioned exactly where the DC has planned for them to be placed.

Felt like Riley called the game from a scared perspective and it’s starting to feel like his decision making in crucial moments just isn’t good. The back to back tight end screens inside the 10 yard line in the first quarter were ridiculous. The playcalling on USC’s last drive essentially lost the game for USC. Either trust Miller and the WRs to make a play to get one first down OR run the ball at least twice and get some time off the clock. Not challenging the 4th and 1 prior to Michigan’s first TD… just bad stuff all around. He’s the main reason why USC lost this game, IMO. Many things for him to learn from and improve on, and we’ll see if he does that.

We can tackle if you were watching the game we had a few miss tackle in crunch time that were seriously impactful. But we had three plays where the gap was not plugged that they had long runs of. 50+, and two of those big runs came from 1st half. Are defense is legit 2nd half that Michigan team had only 9 total yards in the 2nd half until they got that long run that the gap wasn’t plugged and that was towards the end of the 4th quarter with less than 4minutes to go. So our defense overall wasn’t the issue it was the offense scheme, OL issues badly. Coach Riley is playing to conservative in the begging of games which idk y he is doing so.

Here’s what’s real.. Riley‘s air raid works OK against bad teams. But when you get to the Big Ten and face teams like Michigan, you’re going to have to play some hard-nose tough physical football in the trenches which SC clearly cannot do… Problem is, Riley doesn’t recruit elite HS lineman and settles for a bunch 3 stars because his offensive schemes aren’t built around a tough grit running game. His offense is soft, all finesse, and not physical enough against teams with good defenses who have big fast D lineman like Michigan. Better start recruiting better in the trenches if SC wants to compete in the Big Ten 10.

In 2022 Penn State I believe had the number 1 (or one of the best) statistical run defense and Michigan put up 400 rushing yards on em. Calls were missed both ways. USC obviously jumped off sides once and the ball was hiked which would have given Michigan a first down. Instead they had to punt which ended a drive. The double fumble play should've been an incomplete pass which would've been a 4th down for USC. Instead USC got a first down which lead to a TD. Fans of every team keep a tally of every questionable call against their team while conveniently ignoring calls that screwed their opponents.

It was a fumble. The off side on SC, yes. But everything else you're saying is not true. The blind side hit on Lemon wasn't called and it was helmet to helmet. 2 face mask calls weren't called. Horse collar that wasn't called. A UM player that cut our DE leg from underneath when he was engaged with a player. Holding on 2 of 3 of those long runs. TE was tackled when the ball was coming to him. Our OL play was dominated I agree Branches back peddling when Johnson had that pick six was his fault completely. That 4 and 1 should have been challenged that gave UM a first and eventually a TD. The one-sided calling was terrible on the ref

They have done this to people in the past, and its not even just a couple of samples within the last 3 years. Holding the ball the whole game and running is what they do to big time oppenents with high powered offenses. Your offense is no longer high powered if it only gets the ball 1 or 2 times a quarter.

1 from a horse collar, the other from a blind side block, neither were called. Your play clock hit 0, no flag. Your man was short by half a yard, you were given a first down (no review) and ran for a td the next run. Stop dude.

Lincoln Riley on the Road vs another ranked opponent always has a deer in the headlights look. Tee Martin would have called a better game than this. 2 weeks to prepare and his vaunted offense could only score 24 points. 🙄 Gtfoh.

Get off the radio and just do a podcast, the commercials are terrible. I’m pissed as much hype as we’ve given the staff, (deserving or not) the play calling especially offensively cost us the game. Came in shell shocked and ended the game cute offensively, the play calling offensively was atrocious in both circumstances. No feel for the game just a head coach who came up with a game plan and that’s what we ran, then he made adjustments and we had success but once we had the lead straight back to the game plan, o line was bad but in the right protection schemes looked fine. I’m confused I thought Lincoln was a genius

USC #7 messed up on all 3 of Michigan's long runs. Go watch the replays of all 3. USC #7 rushed in too soon at the wrong angle each time. Somebody should teach USC #7 that sometimes you have to read the play before rushing in, especially if he plays the safety position, he needs to figure out what's going on before rushing in at the wrong approach angle.
