This T245 Trolling Motor battery was built for my older brothers fishing kayak. It's in a 30P4S configuration with 80ah of usable storage.
After a car landed on his head (not kidding) the easiest way for him to get around is in a wheelchair take a look at his channel at some of his projects he has entertained himself with over the years.

Cut the mix on the background music please. Even after you lowered the volume I had a hard time separating out your voice. Question: Has anyone come up with a system for generating bar code stickers for cells that could be used to quickly identify a cell and relate it to a database?

Sorry you didn't like the music really put effort into that part of the video too :( I think many have talked about it but not really come up with a way to truly get it to work

It's not simply a matter of taste. It's the fact that I can't hear what you are saying. Choosing music that avoids the frequencies in the speech range would help too. Surely there must be copyright-safe music that has been created to complement voiceovers.

That will give amazing run times. I just did a similar pack, after making my own outboard using a 2hp mariner leg I fitted with a 90v brushed motor (750w) so I wired my pack as 10p20S with some higher voltage mosfet's in my own PWM speed controller. After a whole weekend of use, it still only reaches ~3.4v/cell. Your build is way better than any lead acid options. He could also plug a lipo alarm into the balance port when in use, it will fire off when there's about 20% remaining with liion's..

How is this better than any lead acid option? Why couldn’t he have just used an 80ah lead acid marine battery? I’m only asking because I’d like to learn more about building a battery pack.

I think because acid batterys can't discharge much than the li pack can. Sorry if im not correct and the bad english :) (but acid battery can suply more ah in a shurtly time, for this are used for start the engine of cars)

Awesome. Just one advice, never cut the BMS wires, rather flatten up the bunch and tape it in the end. Cutting BMS wires alters the resistance hence, the resistivity in each group of cell while balancing during the charge process.. something not big, but not too small to be ignored. Thanks 👍

The thing that surprises me is the amount of time spent on sorting the cells to an exact capacity using some simple software to calculate which cell goes in which pack. Given the uncertainty on the measurement of your capacity the actual number is not very important, if you round them all up or down to multiples of 50 or 100 you are fine as well and it saves you a lot of time.
@HBPowerwall

That idea is common with several thousand cell packs - smaller ones repackr works very well charge and discharge voltage is max of 0.02v

1. Given up on fusing for low current (per cell) applications? 2. Cheap balance boards are more trouble then they are worth!! Balance charge or use a balance checker and only charge to 4.05v once your happy the cells are well matched, checking occasionally. 3. 4s is the new 3s Most camping items will run no problems at 16v and run down to 10v. 4. Where did you get the Asus batteries from at a good price? Stored at 3.6 to 3.8v those batteries will outlast time itself.
@HBPowerwall
@HBPowerwall 6 жыл бұрын
Tried to fuse but looked ugly - yes that's my excuse ugly lol but took every step possible to still build a safe battery. Still needs load fuses and waterproof box for it but that'll be in the next video. I agree those BMS cause more issues than they solve but I was TRYING to build this battery as good as possible. 4s is definitely becoming more popular Over time i've saved 100's of laptop battery packs with these cells in them - too good for powerwall use I thought.

I have been on the water on over 100 (maybe 300) trips in a boat with a trolling motor and one 100ahr lead acid battery. Many times when you run it down to empty, you can tell the motor is almost empty the way it behaves. You probably have to monitor the voltage of Lithium to make sure if you are at the end of the lake, you have enough to make it back, or have a small dedicated backup battery. I was just wondering due the inefficiency of the lead acid how the run time would compare if the motor was run on high with a 100ahr lead acid compared to the runtime on the 80ahr battery until the motor basically stopped. Life expectancy does not matter if you have to row. I was actually in the process of building one before this video. The trolling motor I still use is 40 years old MX60 Minnekota.

Hi, I have a question regarding the internal resistance of 18650 battery 1- What is the risk of building a recycled 18650 lithium battery without checking and measuring the internal resistance? 2- How is the battery built after measuring and knowing the internal resistance values of the 18650 batteries, especially if the internal resistance values for each battery differ from the others for 18650 for recycled lithium batteries?

I've made 25s4p pack for the trolling motor using new 3400mah batteries from aliexpress. Also decide not to take risk with built-in BMS and use ISDT charger instead - at least i can get numbers this way. Gave it a try recently. Running on the slowest speed(3kmh) it lasted for 6hrs and 15min, consuming 180w on average. Wattmeter indicated i managed to pull almost 1150whr up to the moment when voltage dropped to 3v/cell. Going faster require about 300-400w and resulted in low voltage warning when battery was less than 25% of capacity. BTW, these motors can take 16.8V, no need for pwm controller. This will kind of push it to the limits. My motor is rated 430w at 12v, according to wattmeter it was pulling 600w+ on 16.8v battery. Running it full throttle reduces the range. I was getting 15km on medium speed and 18km on low speed. Max speed will empty battery in 1.5hrs with about 9-10 miles covered.

In America and only having 110v as standard residential wiring, we can't use those cheaper Chinese spot welders. We have to use spot welders that run on batteries, like the Malectrics or the Kweld kits. They are brilliant!

Why e bike packs or something like that cant be fused or can it be fused
@HBPowerwall
@HBPowerwall 4 жыл бұрын
You're issue is the amp draw of an ebike battery. Typically they use 30amp peek cells - it would add too much resistance & also fuses are by their very nature weak, so in an environment that vibrates too much it would cause an issue.

great to know where i can get those exact cells from just recently built a battery box with an inverter and lighter outlet out of random cells i had laying around (it was a nightmare to match the capacities of each parallel set by tacking lipo cells onto each cell pack to balance the capacities) capacity: 750wh 240V power: 500W 12V power: 240W 24V power: direct connection all enclosed in a steel box with holes cut for all the plugs and indicators thinking of building a DIY powerwall for my caravan next

I'm working on a Lion battery for my motorhome. Only 10-15AH but that's plenty for what I need. So far, 5 x 4 lithium battery holders, 20 protected 18650s. I'll run 5 packs in parallel of 4 in series giving me 13.8v nominal. That should allow me a peak draw of at least 6a.

I think you may want to include a current limiting device on each cell since you have so many in parallel. If one cell develops an internal short, the other 39 cells will happily discharge into the bad cell and create a burn hazard. I've seen others use a thin piece of wire in series with each cell for current limiting.
