This T245 Trolling Motor battery was built for my older brothers fishing kayak. It's in a 30P4S configuration with 80ah of usable storage.
After a car landed on his head (not kidding) the easiest way for him to get around is in a wheelchair take a look at his channel at some of his projects he has entertained himself with over the years.

Cut the mix on the background music please. Even after you lowered the volume I had a hard time separating out your voice. Question: Has anyone come up with a system for generating bar code stickers for cells that could be used to quickly identify a cell and relate it to a database?

Sorry you didn't like the music really put effort into that part of the video too :( I think many have talked about it but not really come up with a way to truly get it to work

It's not simply a matter of taste. It's the fact that I can't hear what you are saying. Choosing music that avoids the frequencies in the speech range would help too. Surely there must be copyright-safe music that has been created to complement voiceovers.

That will give amazing run times. I just did a similar pack, after making my own outboard using a 2hp mariner leg I fitted with a 90v brushed motor (750w) so I wired my pack as 10p20S with some higher voltage mosfet's in my own PWM speed controller. After a whole weekend of use, it still only reaches ~3.4v/cell. Your build is way better than any lead acid options. He could also plug a lipo alarm into the balance port when in use, it will fire off when there's about 20% remaining with liion's..

1. Given up on fusing for low current (per cell) applications? 2. Cheap balance boards are more trouble then they are worth!! Balance charge or use a balance checker and only charge to 4.05v once your happy the cells are well matched, checking occasionally. 3. 4s is the new 3s Most camping items will run no problems at 16v and run down to 10v. 4. Where did you get the Asus batteries from at a good price? Stored at 3.6 to 3.8v those batteries will outlast time itself.

Tried to fuse but looked ugly - yes that's my excuse ugly lol but took every step possible to still build a safe battery. Still needs load fuses and waterproof box for it but that'll be in the next video. I agree those BMS cause more issues than they solve but I was TRYING to build this battery as good as possible. 4s is definitely becoming more popular Over time i've saved 100's of laptop battery packs with these cells in them - too good for powerwall use I thought.

Awesome. Just one advice, never cut the BMS wires, rather flatten up the bunch and tape it in the end. Cutting BMS wires alters the resistance hence, the resistivity in each group of cell while balancing during the charge process.. something not big, but not too small to be ignored. Thanks 👍

I actually just made up my second for a 24v system. I dont even know what they really are rated at, each 12v battery is 150 1.65ah 18650... I got about 20 running hours using it in different variations between charges to 4.10 to 3.5. Got a bit to finish up and we will see how all 300 handle the new 24v 80lb Terrova

I am using 11s10p configuration for my BMS project. That means I'm using 11 stacks in series with each stack consisting of 10 cells in parallel. I am in a dilemma if must balance each cell in the pack(individual cell balancing- 2 wires coming out each cell) separately or get a wire out of each stack(2 wires coming out of each stack consisting 10 cells in parallel) to implement passive balancing algorithm, SOC, SOH. Can you give an insight on which one is more preferable?

The thing that surprises me is the amount of time spent on sorting the cells to an exact capacity using some simple software to calculate which cell goes in which pack. Given the uncertainty on the measurement of your capacity the actual number is not very important, if you round them all up or down to multiples of 50 or 100 you are fine as well and it saves you a lot of time.

Since this is the latest video, I'll ask here. With your spot welder, are the tips spring loaded? If so, do you push them down until the spring bottoms out? I saw another video where they said spot welding is a resistive welding. Pressing too hard actually reduces the amount of resistance and it doesn't weld as good. Maybe you can play around with pressure on the tips to get different results. Perhaps this is why the arm on the device would work better as it was spring loaded, too.
@HBPowerwall

I think Tesla cells use a plate with holes that are bigger than the positive terminal and line up with them, then a short fuse connects them. With nickel strips on the positive side, you could make a grid that lies *between* the cells and spot weld the fuses to it, or even try a copper plate with large drilled holes. The negative side can be spot welded as normal. Best place to attach the power cables is at the centre of each terminal plate, or at multiple places for really high currents. With the power cables at the corners, the entire 30P current goes through just 2 strips worth of nickel!

30 cells x 4 in parallel - 4.2v so effectively it's 12v min 16.8v max charge in the thumbnail that shows positive & negative joined on the left and again on the right - on the other side the gap in the middle is bridged join all cells together.. God I hope that explained it enough.

I've made 25s4p pack for the trolling motor using new 3400mah batteries from aliexpress. Also decide not to take risk with built-in BMS and use ISDT charger instead - at least i can get numbers this way. Gave it a try recently. Running on the slowest speed(3kmh) it lasted for 6hrs and 15min, consuming 180w on average. Wattmeter indicated i managed to pull almost 1150whr up to the moment when voltage dropped to 3v/cell. Going faster require about 300-400w and resulted in low voltage warning when battery was less than 25% of capacity. BTW, these motors can take 16.8V, no need for pwm controller. This will kind of push it to the limits. My motor is rated 430w at 12v, according to wattmeter it was pulling 600w+ on 16.8v battery. Running it full throttle reduces the range. I was getting 15km on medium speed and 18km on low speed. Max speed will empty battery in 1.5hrs with about 9-10 miles covered.

Sweet pack! neater than mine I went the fuse wire route. l have ran into a few problems with my 4s packs the high voltage pushes more amps into the motor reducing the AH rating. Tried a few buck convertors to keep a steady 12.5v but they get HOT will try a few more beefier ones or add a tiny pc fan. Before my buck burnt out I was getting 20% or more run time @12.5 vs 14-16 volts. The bright side is it supercharges the trolling motor lol Still it beats a 3s pack which the motor falls flat with much capacity remaining. Just remember to monitor voltage a 4s will easily drop cells below 3 volts if not monitored.

Next one I build will be fused between the Series packs I think. It's the neatest way I can think of setting it up. Will take out the whole battery but better than nothing. I would of put each 10's in it's own bin. So, 2350's bin, 2360's bin, 2370's bin. Depending on the spread, that'd be a lot of bins. Buuuut, would make things a bit faster in the building process. Especially if you decided to do the 14s setup ;) Seeing as how you're doing a trolling motor and small packs, I suppose this will work too :P

I was just relooking over this older video, about what size is the spotwelds? My spotwelder welds two spots about 1.5mm in dia. The 4ga, cables and weld tips and holders get so hot after about 50 welds I can't hold it anymore, it has two layers of of shrinktubing, one is the TEMco 1" dual wall stuff, with glue, and it has paper wrapped around shimming the tuning from 1/2" to just over 3/4", it feels hot enough to melt the glue! I'm thinking my tips are not sharp enough, and the welds are too big. I also was welding the thick nickle, and the batteries are capable of well over 400amps, I have about 20" of 4gauge cable going to it, with 12" of 2ga, going to the relay, it works well down to 9.5v, being 3s lipo, that's where I stop! Any suggestions? Maybe I should take it a bit slower?

Also I used the batt hookup, nickel fuse, 100 cells, in a square, with added strip, in a square, 2cells from the edge, with two strips crossing about 3cells between, with another nickel strip across the top. I have a 12g, silicone wire, connected to the double strip areas and another at the very top. For 4 total, since you tested the fuses. I'm curious if you think this will suffice? My system can only pull about 300 amps. And this is one of 3+ banks, so 100 amps peak, it's not perfect, but I have the current coming from 4 locations in the middle of the pack. Not many have videoed actual use of this stuff. Any idea? Thanks

Have you tried using your pip4048 inverter to run your grid tie system off grid which in turn will charge your butteries when the solar load if more than the house ?
@HBPowerwall
@HBPowerwall 6 жыл бұрын
No, that would end very badly - Its just a bad idea - connecting any 240v to the output of the pip will instantly require a new mainboard - know a few people installing their pips and getting the input and output mixed up. Best to get the right inverter for the job from the beginning

Not sure as unloaded at max speed it's only 1.2amp draw - bet that changes once a load is added. As for charing it depends on your charger. Bigger chargers would have no issue doing it in 10 hours - my charger will probably take 20-30 hours flat to full

Hi Pete, now you've used the spot welder but fuse are no longer fitted/required for this pack?
@HBPowerwall
@HBPowerwall 6 жыл бұрын
Really should have put more effort into adding fuses of some sort - for its application (in a boat) if there is an issue it'll just go overboard. It will also be moved and bumped a lot much like an ebike battery. I've gone out of my way to make sure I'm using the best most balanced cells I have laying around. Time will tell if it was a good or bad call.

Hello, I was wondering if you could give me your suggestion. I have 6 packs of 24-18650 cells in parallel. And I want to build a power bank that can power 12 volt Accessories I also have a 12v 1000 watt pure sine wave inverter. How can I connect all 6 packs together to achieve the 12 volts. Thanks so much for your input.
@stefanbr4mke

mario sellet 12 Volts us a little bit tricky. 3 packs in a row results in 10.8 volts (3.6×3) ..at full charge it is 3x4.2=12.6 which would suit to the inverter. Battery state 25% would be around 3,3 volts per cell (under load) ..so it would be 3x3.3=9,9 volts. Typical low voltage cutoff is at 10.5 to 11 volts. That means you can only use around 70%, perhaps 60% of your battery. 4 cells in row would be over 16 volts full charged and cause shutdown or even damage to your inverter. My favorite would be 7Serial but you need an 24v inverter.

Pete, how much self discharge do you consider okay? Do you check each cells voltage before you store them for 30 days and check again? Some of my BT-C3100 chargers state that a cell is full at everything between 4.15 and 4.20. So I just now sort them by voltage, let them sit and check them again.. but I am unsure what self discharge is okay, if any at all over 30 days.

also if you use an rc or ebike motor at 6 volts and then turn a stator on a stand you (generac 120/ 10 magnet at 2 rotations per second) you get a really long battery life you just need an ac throttle and an ac ebike motor. also a controller for the first motor must be built to keep it from rotating to fast.
