Really nice looking repair. I remember always being disappointed when a fellow bandmember had their instrument repaired and the lacquer was scorched around the solder joints or where it was heated to make it easier to remove dents.

Love how you save as much of the original instrument as possible; takes real skill and experience. I can't turn thin metal w/o a collet; I'd "crush it" in a 3 jaw and not in a good way.

Use a plug, so the tube doesn't deform.

David Sanborn once said of a repairman I knew: "Never trust a repairman with a clean bench!" I'll never forget that.

I respectfully disagree. My former boss/master always warned us about the dangers of a messy bench, and we generally followed the rule. However, on one occasion, we didn't. And that resulted in the biggest screw up of that workshop in several years. Organize your stuff folks.

Silver solder at high temp of about 1250 Degrees and soft solder 50/50 lead/tin at 365 degrees.
@jameswyatt13044 жыл бұрын
@@jimflys2 Was more wondering when you choose to silver vs. soft solder. Also when to braze and if that's an acetylene or MAPP torch. And if you have to remove residual acid flux.

How wood you repair a split near the slide!?
@tamasfoldesi23582 жыл бұрын
@@jameswyatt1304 Generally, silver solder is used for things that you'll never want to take apart. It can be disassembled, but it requires higher temperature and it can damage the finish and you need to remove every soft soldered part near it, so it is only used for stuff that needs to hold stronger than what soft solder can offer. Like spring catches (or anything else) on the keys of woodwind instruments, or the silver solder joint between a finger ring and its flange.

Why are you wearing a mask alone in the shop? wearing a mask to stop covid is like trying to stop a mosquito with a chain link fence!! Nice work
@jimflys22 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct on your observation. Work requires it, but it does nothing. Neither does the vax btw. Thank you.
@tamasfoldesi23582 жыл бұрын
@@jimflys2 That's quite untrue. Vax stopped it. I don't know about the US, but here, there's basically no Covid for almost a year now.
