I had a housefire in 2009. my XBOX360 and PS2s somehow BOTH survived the fire completely functional, even though the discs within them were heat damaged to the point they could no longer be read. I've never been willing to disassemble either, but in the 14 years since they've continued to function just fine.

The reason why the disks weren't working anymore is probably that the layers started separating. The disk might look perfectly fine, but it won't work anymore.

Same here. My house burned in April and let me tell EVERYONE, that smoke a caustic! Almost everything in my house that had exposed metal had rust less than 24 hours after the fire. I have a TON of stuff I put in storage (including my whole video game collection) that I need to clean and test when I have a new place.

@@madmatt2024 even the game in sealed boxesmight be non-readable after a fire just from the heat warping the plastic with no visible damage. I lost most of my PS2 collection in that way.

Best move to clean the board. I had an incident many years ago where my crt tv has no brightness due to soot from a malfunctioning oil furnace. The soot on the board actually changed the values on some of the components so i took it apart and cleaned the main board. It worked fine after that.

Combustion is an oxidative process. So, any corrosion present on metal after a fire could be either because of the fire itself or because of the water used to put it out.
@madmatt2024

The smoke is caustic/corrosive. When my house burned in April, literally everything with exposed or poorly plated metal had rust within 24 hours. Even stuff that wasn't exposed to fire or water had rust.

When I was nine (1997), I got a PS1 for Christmas. A few weeks later we had a house fire and everything was ruined. Firefighters said it was only kind of safe to go in after they put the fire out and my parents decided to get my PS1 and Game Gear out, left the Genesis and NES. The Game Gear was in a travel case so it was clean and functional. The PS1 was covered in soot and clearly got hit with water. It didn't work. The game inside was fine (MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero). Even after all these years I can still smell the smell of house fire on the disc, it's faint now but it's there.

Honestly, the heatsink could have been cleaned and would have been fine, but reusing the PSU, the _one_ component that contains critical electronics you don't clean on the inside, makes no sense to me. It's "open air", so it definitely will have plenty of soot in there. That is the one part I would definitely have swapped, just to be safe, especially because a faulty PSU may work now, but can easily kill the rest of the system in a few days, weeks or months. I really liked the molten center cover, looked pretty awesome, so I would have kept that, if possible.

Would probably be possible to fabricate some of the body parts with 3D printing, but might also be better to just rebuild it in a new custom case, since the core components are still working. Then again if reselling as a refurbished product + it was from a housefire, its probably better to use donor parts and make it as standard as possible. Nonetheless great work as always.
